Monday January 27 1975 2A THE KANSAS CITY TIMES Seismic Fault Opens Quakes Rock Imperial Valley Glimpses Brawley Calif (AP) Another series of mild earth-uakes rumbled through this littery desert town yesterday as city employees remained on emergency standby in the event of a major quake Over 30 tremors have been felt in the Imperial Valley community since- Thursday and scientists believe a newly formed earthquake fault south of town could be responsible Seismologists at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena said tihe exact number of quakes in the latest series could not be immediately determined but they said all were in the 3-point range on the Richter scale Authorities said there were no reports of injuries or damage from the latest tremors However several shocks since Thursday ranging from a 35 to a 47 Richter measurement cracked windows and brought merchandise to the floor in business district Seismologists said the quakes have all been centered about three miles southeast of the agricultural community-just north of the Mexican border Scientists believe the new fault line about seven miles in length and running in a northeast to southwest direction may have been formed between Brawley and the small community of Westmoreland 10 miles to the west Since the tremors began Thursday officials in Brawley have placed 100 city employees on emergency standby
