fe 'fl Magnificent Catholic Institution One of Bismarck's public institu tions that is alike creditable to Bisinarck and its managment is St Alexius hospital, located at the corner I of Main and Sixth streets, and under the management of the order of the sisters of St. Benedict. It is a large three story and basement brick ing, an illustration of which is given herewith, and was built in 1884 by Messrs. Alex. McKenzie and R.

B. Mellon for hotel purposes, named "The Lamborru" in honor of the late Col. Chas. B. Lamborn, then land sioner of the Northern Pacific road, and a warm personal friend of Mr.

McKenzie. It was never opened as a hotel. In 1885 the property was sold by Messrs. McKenzie and Mellon to the Benedictine order, having ers at St. Cloud, and was PP verted into a hospital, under the pervision of Sister Alexia as perior, who was in turn succeeded by Sister Regina.

For a long time a portion of the building was devoted to the use of St. Mary's parochial school, but as the reputation of the hospital as a place for the careful nursing of the sick widened the school was forced to seek other quarters. In 1891 Sister Regina was succeeded by Sister Boniface, who has continued to supervise the affairs of the tion to the present time- The hospital has had a constant and rapid growth, both in reputation and in equipment necessary to plete and maintain its efficiency, until now it is said to be the most complete in all its appointments between the twin cities and the Pacific coast, with one single exception. It is furnished with steam heat and electric lighting, hot and cold water and other modern conveniences throughout In the basement are located a ing plant of modern construction and equipment, a laundry with all the modern appliances, and store rooms. On the first floor are located large reception and dining rooms, a very attractively decorated private chappel, sisters dormitories and reception rooms and a very commodious and conveniently arranged kitchen, with elevators for the convenience of ing patients on the floors above, and here as well as elsewhere all is the very essence of neatness and ness.

On the second floor are located the business office, library and apartments for the care of lady patients, besides pantry, kitchen, linen closets, bath with all modern conveniences, etc. The accommodations on this floor in- clude some 15 comfortable, well ed and neatly furnished rooms, served for lady patients. On the third floor are located the operating and dressing rooms, atory, reading room, bath, kitchen, pantry, linen closets, etc- Here is also a large public ward and some ten or a dozen private rooms for the cajre cf male patients. The operating and dressing rooms of this institution compare favorably in point of uip-todate equipment and conveniences with those of any similar establishment anywhere, the operating table being the only one of its kind west of cago, and is composed wholly of glass and enameled iron. During the time that Sister face has been in charge many provements have been installed, and others are in contemplation including LIBRARY ROOM, ST.

Alexius hospital is being conducted have proven themselves to be no exception to the rule, for here, without regard to rank, station or creed, is every attention shown those who seek this institution for treatment. An innovation of quite recent origin, and one that will add no only to the efficiency of the tion, but will be of inestimable value to those who come here to assist in nuTsing, as many do, is a course of weekly lectures that are given by the different members of the medical fession in the city, on subjects nected with the care of the sick. MARY'S SCHOOL. The Catholic school, successfully conducted by the Benedictine sisters was established by the late Bishop Martin Marty and Rev. Chrysostom Foffe, 0. S. in 1878.
