Page 8-ASAN ANTONIO January 27 1976 Tattoos fade never Your Health By George C. Thosteson. u.n. but disappear Dear Dr. Thosteson: I saw a doctor on television recently explaining psoriasis.

He said a layer of skin grows out from the bottom up to the top normally in about 58 days. In psoriasis this takes only about four days and this is the cause of the problem. Okay, so tell me. How come a tattoo on my arm is still there after 50 years? B.P. It would seem that the constant shedding of skin would eradicate the tattoo, it? And it does but at a very slow rale, which accounts for the fading of tattoos with age.

It is true that the outer, dying layer of skin is constantly being shed at about the rate you mention. But when you consider that a layer actually involves a mi- 'croscopic layering of cells, of which there are many, then the reason for the tattoo's longevity becomes understandable. The dyes used in tattooing are injected relatively deep into the tissue, many, many layers below the surface. In fact, every time you wipe your arm with a towel you are removing some of these skin cells with no noticeable el feet on the state of your tattoo. In order to remove a tattoo, even many years after its application, one must resort to procedures such as skin-planing or chemical removal.

Hearing problem Dear Dr. Thosteson: It seems to me that my tinnitus became more noticeable when I began taking a reducing drug. When I discontinued the drug for a week or so the noises seemed to abate somewhat. Then 1 began taking it again and the noises came on as loudly as before. They are still with me.

My question: could the drug be the cause of the noises although I no longer take it? Mrs. I don't know what type of reducing drug you are referring to. However, usually if a drug is responsible for symptoms like this (and they can be) discontinuing the use will relieve the symptoms. 1 would suspect other factors at work in your ear noises otosclerosis, a formation of spongy bone in the inner ear, for example. You give me sufficient information for further comment.

You might find my booklet on ear noises instructive. Fat intake limitations Dear Dr. Thosteson: Why does a diabetic have to limit the amount of fat in the diet? M.C.S. It is not so much a matter of limiting fat consumption as it is putting fat into the context of a carefully measured and balanced intake of food generally. Foods may vary, but the total calories must be constant as must be the proportions of protein, fats, and carbohydrates.

Limiting fat is a good method of losing and controlling weight. take a vha nee on For a better understanding of this diseasr. writ to l)r. I lioste.son in care tin- Son Antonio press. for a of his booklet.
