Padilla facing Tony Padilla, the veteran boxing promoter here, goes to the mat Monday and about a 200 to 1 underdog. His worthy opponent is Kid IRS, managed by Uncle Sam. Kid IKS has a knockout string that would impress Manilla Gorilla. One of his first big victories was over A1 Capone about 45 years ago and today his record stands at He drops a small, warm-up match every decade or so but when the Kid dow than really he's home- honkers st ronger made soap. Tony set some kind of record by promoting boxing matches here for 20 But the wheels came off in 1971 and he took bankruptcy.

During his peak years he brought half a dozen or more world champions to Sun Antonio to wage fistic war and at least 30 world contenders paraded through here under guidance and payroll. Funny thing, folks are always yelping about civic pride and doing something for the city as they promote baseball, basketball and other sports but Padilla, for many years, did more than any individual to get San Antonio world recognition and nobody ever mentioned his efforts in connection with civic duties. Writers from all over the world visited here to cover Padilla programs, including the late Nut Fleischer, recognized as the world's top ring authority. Nat was here at least twice. But that's another story for another day.

Tony is now retired from Kelly Field and through with boxing. Well, he was through with boxing but now about to get back in with hope of making enough to off (plus fines) that the government demands. who know the inner workings of boxing feel that Tony is getting a bad rap and his only hope is that get a judge tomorrow who knows a lot about the ring game. You see, they're nailing him on taxes." Uncle Sam says Tony, the promoter, should have taken the taxes from each foreign purse here. Padilla claims he knew nothing about that and points out that on the lengthy forms lie filled out to gel foreign fighters in this country on temporary working visas not a line explaining or even hinting of such a requirement.

lie's right, too. With four pages of questions and explanations in small print it seems like they could have found room for one mention of that important item. Padilla also argues that he paid the managers that he dealt with, not the fighters, and it was the obligation of the American based managers to cut those checks for Unde Sam. Jobnnv Villaflor of Los Angeles, llarrv Kabakoff of California. Andy Zannrrippa of Carrizo Springs and Brad Staples of Laredo are just a few American fight managers who brought foreign pugs here and accepted their full purses for performances in San Antonio.

what managers are for, to manage the business of their Padilla argues. Trainers are the ones who guide the boxing part of it and I never paid a trainer or fighter, just managers," he said Nevertheless, Kid IKS wants Padilla to pay up and a judge is flying here from Washington to referee tomorrow's bout. It should be a slaughter because Tony even have an attorney late Saturday. As he put it. looking for a lawyer who'll work real cheap because I'm busted but lie'll also have to know a lot about boxing as well as the law .1 he odds just went up on Kid IKS.

Familiar faces hile on the subject of boxing, a couple of newspaper ads in the Miami News caught my eye during Super Bowl week. They proved what, a small world we have today. Termite Watkins, a kid who fought here several times while operating as an amateur and then a beginning pro out of Houston, headlined a Miami card as he faced Juan Hidalgo in a 10-rounder. Both men were undefeated. And the ad just below that one told how the sensational Thunderbolt Patterson was going to wrestle Fearless Frank Goodish for the championship of all Florida.

Frank, you might remember, was once the biggest Toro gridder here and after the season I put him to work as a sportswriter tor the Now getting a fat wallet on a grunt and groan circuit. Goodish probably is wrestling the same dude tor the championship of Georgia or Kentucky tomorrow night so it matter much how lie fared with the Thunderbolt, in Florida but you might be interested in knowing that Watkins cleaned clock, taking a lopsided decision. Laser Wain scores Kecognition has been slow coming to Chuck Carlock, the sports laser beam man been slow mainly because Chuck has been slow in getting acceptance of his sideline football measuring dev ice. But he scored big in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, introducing his invention to the world via national television. Chuck, who lives here and operates his company out of Hondo, is now pushing hard to get the NFL and NCAA to recognize the need for his laser machine.

One thing about Chuck, he doesn't give up. He banged on doors from coast to coast before finally getting into Senior Bowl and he did it all just before and right after a serious heart operation, Now that healthy again he just might storm into Pete office and lay a laser beam through the head, from ear to ear. The two ranking hea vyweights staged a slugfest that saw Foreman stag gered in the first round and Lyle hurt in the second. The second round lasted only two minutes, a development first reported by ABC and later confirmed by timekeeper John Worth, who said the round was shortened by a minute because of a malfunction in the electronic timer. The malfunction could have cost Foreman an earlier victory, and had he lost, would have been a rallying cry for his supporters.
