Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Spur Currently the northbotmd Gatlinburg Bypass joins the Spur on a narrow ledge between the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River and the side of a mountain This space limitation means that two-lane traffic leaving Gatlin-burg has to be merged into one lane to allow Bypass traffic to merge onto the Spur On June 30 the Federal Highway Administration awarded a $16 million contract to Crowder Construction Co of Spartanburg SC to rebuild the intersection The work will consist of constructing a retainhIg wall along the east bank of the river to support a new acceleration lane for the Bypass During construction motorists on the northbound Bypass will be detoured off the existing merge lane to a "stop" sign at the edge of the Spur where they will turn left toward Pigeon Forge According to park Superinten dent Randall Pope "the detour is not expected to affect the traffic flow out of Gatlinburg on the Spur During high traffic periods however motorists coming off the Bypass may face some delays while they wait Tor a break in the traffic We are asking that motorists be especially careful in that area and we want to remind our neighbors that the speed limit between Gatlinburg and the Bypass junction has always been 25 mph" Work is expected to be completed by March 31 Park officials also announced that work to finish the repaving of the Spur and its parking areas will resume on Sept 7 after being suspended for the peak summer months Motorists can expect temporary lane closures along the Spur until Oct 1 when work will again be suspended in the travel lanes to accommodate heavy traffic generated by the fall leaf season Throughout the period the speed limit on the Spur will remain at 35 mph for the safety of construction workers as well as motorists The speed limit will return to 45 mph when work is Anhur Sipe Jennifer Pestertield Jennifer Pesterfield a 1993 Maryville High School graduate has been awarded a University of Tennessee
