AP) A wildlife experiment in which 74 mallard ducks had their wings intentionally broken to determine whether crippled ducks could survive in the wild was proper, a University of Wisconsin panel says. In addition, the state Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the university staff knew of the 1977-78 project as it was being conducted, said Bernard Wentworth, professor of poultry science and chairman of the UW Madison campus Animal Care Committee. Results of the experiment were reprinted earlier this year in an issue of the department's magazine, Natural Resources. The article drew dozens of letters from readers who questioned the need to scientifically prove what seemed to be obvious and called the experiment cruel.

Fred Van Dyke, the UW graduate student who conducted the study, said in the article that the study was necessary to determine "a quantitative estimate of the percentage of crippled ducks that die, or survive and recover." The article described how all but one of the 74 ducks whose wings were broken, and most of 61 others whose wings were tied down, perished from starvation or exposure or were killed by predators. 7 It was incorrectly reported in the Wednesday Herald Review that the village of Donnellson was voted wet on Tuesday. It was voted dry by a 34-29 margin. A reporter erred. Births.
