I 1 MEMPHIS THURSDAY JUNE 19 1997 The Commercial Appeal SECTION Diana Princess of Wales wears designer Catherine silk crepe evening dress and bolero embroidered with simulated pearls and sequins In a photo taken by Terence Donovan the letter is so large that iti strokes go right through the word 0 I i CELEBRITY REFLECTIONS II Beastie Boy Adam Rauch' who once took professional pride in nastiness has become a serene Buddhist and advocate for a free Tibet Rauch told the magazine Paper that it easy turning over a new public leaf was definitely a real inner battle I was really afraid that people would think I was stupid or that it was too serious or that it would bother people But then I just felt like what I wanted to do so I just tried somebody like me get out there and jump up and down on a soapbox about Tibet really do anything whereas meeting some of those monks can make you all of a sudden say like really nice guys and not uptight The laughing all the time ana having a really good CELEBRITY REFLECTIONS IU is) the spirit of New Jersey himself and I felt him in spirit somewhere close to the U2s Bono speaking of his idol Frank Sinatra on Access Hollywood Bono performed in New Jersey recently CA EYE thanks transplanted Midwesterner Joseph Bryan for this observation: You are SO Memphis when you misread the words on the back of the Keebler Cookie delivery truck: brake for to read brake for Elvis" CELEBRITY REFLECTIONS I For his new book Celebrating Success (Heath Communications: $1295) Gerard Smith asked the creme de la creme of big cheeses about the meaning or success Most respondents dashed off a line or two intended to demonstrate that a fierce determination to be best need not supersede a love of teddy bears and the unfailing determination to call by 10 am on Day Only a few respondents had more to say Among those was Robert Shapiro best known as the lawyer who played second fiddle to Johnnie Cochran: The attorney begins with the classic final-exam opening a polite stretching of the answer by thanking the questioner and repeating the question very fact that you have solicited my he writes a certain degree of success in Hooking his thumbs in the armholes of his figurative vest he opines is a state or mind I think The personal triumphs that one achieves as a result of his or her own efforts are many times more valuable than the accidental attainment of any Shapiro goes on to describe learning a musical instrument or a foreign language and to compare those achievements with achieving personal best never mentioned He concludes again in final-examese by thanking the author for the opportunity to participate and wishing him good luck The signature on the bottom of Demographics good for viewers even if they care Auction of gowns will benefit charities By Barbara Bradley The Commercial Appeal Fashion Editor Despite what you may have read RuPaul the female impersonator has no plans to bid for one or the gowns worn by Diana Princess of Wales to be auctioned for charity at in New York Wednesday But you can see how the rumor could start: A tall blond princess sometimes overdressed a tall blond queen with a similar problem "The dresses (which are size 8 and 10) fit said Karin Flores a spokesman for RuPaul in Los Angeles But be plenty of oth-' ers elbowing for a chance at the 79 cocktail dresses romantic ballgowns and regal state-occasion dresses worn by the most glamorous woman in the workf Sales of the catalogs alone (paperbacks are $60 hardcovers are $265 and leather-bound limited editions signed by the princess are $2000) have generated $15 million according to Andree Corroon public relations manager for in New York Bidding for each gown is expected to start at $5000 although there is no minimum bid All proceeds from the auction ana the catalog sales will benefit cancer and AIDS charities in this country and in Great Britain said Corroon is handling the sale free of charge Among those who plan to bid will be Memphis designer Pat Kerr famous for her antique lace wedding gowns Kerr said she wants a gown to add to her collection ornistorical garments and laces that date to the 16th Century and include clothes that belonged to Queen Victoria Kerr will also attend a private reception Monday at at which the Princess will appear is one reason in said Kerr who called the princess the person with the most influence on the wedding industry in the last half century helped bring back the traditional wedding Historically monarchs have iiassed their finery down to adies-in-waiting friends or family This unprecedented auction of such a large part of a wardrobe gives a revealing look at 15 years as a royal and her evolution from Shy Di to regal ambassador Along the way we may see a bit of our own changing tastes Coula 16 years really have passed since the morning the world rolled out of bed to view the televised wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer? The earliest dress a pale blue frock with a pink satin sash designed bv David and Elizabeth Emanuel (who also designed wedding gown) looks hopelessly naive now But it might nave seemed just right worn by a fairy tale princess in 1982 when happy endings still seemed possible In the mid-to late Dynasty Di made a fashion spectacle of herself in flashy dresses with padded shoulders flounced hems and big bows at Please see DIANA Page C3 CA WRY We have any enemies just that some of our friends are trying to kill us OUR DAILY WEB Encourage dads husbands and brothers to keep an eye on their health including having routine screening for prostate cancer Check out a new site devoted to male health at Edited by Jon Sparks Contributions from our press services Leave messages for CA EYE at 529-2810 or E-mail sparksgomemphiscom TOM WALTER TelevislonRadio graphics The stations say that is part of providing a good newscast too But rather see more people who know what doing spending the time necessary to report the news we can dream we? returns Antiques Roadshow which went off the air in May in favor of a show about genealogy returns in reruns this weekend The show airs at 6 pm Sundays on WKNO-TV Channel 10 The show has 13 episodes and features ordinary people getting information about the value of their antiques Ancestors which replaced it is a show about family history Channel 10 had been holding the show since January and wanted to give it a shot once Antiques Roadshow ran out of original episodes New episodes of Antiques Roadshow probably will begin airing in January said Channel 10 spokesman Debi Robertson The show coming to Memphis but it is visiting Nashville on Aug 16 Miss Tenn pageant The Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant with more than $100000 in scholarships at stake will be televised at 8 pm Saturday on WREG-TV Channel 3 The winner goes on to the Miss America contest To reach reporter Tom Walter call 529-2581 or E-mail Diana wore the Walker outfit Fashion Awards in London and Photos courtesy of Christie's Inc dubbed Elvis behind palace doors to the British on a stale visit to Hong Kong both in 1989 and to film premieres Most television reporters write about demographic ratings because most viewers buy or sell TV advertising time which is what the demos are used for Fbr instance do you care that while WPTY-TV Channel 24 is a distant third in the household race with its 10 pm newscast it actually ties No 2 WREG-TV Channel 3 among viewers 18 to 34 years old? We think so Or that among the two most important demos 18-49 and 25-54 WMC-TV Channel 10 1)m news has a commanding ead with a 9 rating in the first and an 11 rating in the second? And that it gets its highest rating a 17 among people older than 50? We think so Or that WHBQ-TV Channel younger demographics for its 9 pm newscast are juat about as good as Channel for its 10 pm newscast? Again we didn't think so The folks over at Channel 24 though think great They trumpet the fact that they have become competitive among younger viewers at least during its 10 pm newscast and can claim a win among people 12-24 for its 10 newscasts Of course The Andy Griffith Show on WLMT-TV Channel 30 actually wins among those viewers at 10 pm And Channel 13 folks are crowing as well about their 18-49 ratings in prime time Does it mean anything to viewers? It can Stations with good demographics can sell more advertising at higher rates That means the stations have money to invest in their operations (ft also can mean a snow stays on the air or alternately can get ash-canned if the ratings measure up) If a station does make money it can put that money into its news operation It can hire more reporters and producers to provide a more compelling thoughtful newscast Or it can buy new equipment spend money on sets and give us flashy Indian marquetry motifs show up In black crepe dinner dress Diana wore on an official visit to India In 1992 A duchesse satin dress by Walker with crystal beading has never beeri seen by the pub lie because the princess wore It to state dinners and diplomatic receptions at Buckingham Palace.
