Over 49ers At Kezar SAN FRANCISCO Christiansen opens his first full season as coach of the San Francisco 49ers tomorrow facing the club for which he Detroit Lions. The Lions are solid favorites to dump the 49ers in Kezar Stadium. By ED RANDOL 49ERS GET A NEW PLAYER FOR DEFENSE Defensive back Ben Scotti was obtained on waivers by the San Francisco 49ers yesterday from the Los Angeles Rams. At the same time, the 49ers released another defensive back, Howard Williams, on waivers, and stayed at their 40-player limit. Scotti, 27, played three seasons with the Washington Redskins and two years with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Williams, 25, a third-year veteran, canis from the Green Bay Packers in 1963. Cannon To Play In Spots OAKLAND Boston's Patri ots, the only club to whip Oakland twice in 1963, invades the Frank Youell tomor row to meet a club addec a Cannon to its armament. Billy Cannon, the former Houston Oiler, came to Oakland via trade and has been undergoing a cram session on new plays. The former Louisiana State All- America halfback will be used in spot situations this game. Boston won the Eastern Conference title last year and although the Pats win in this American Football League pre season scrapping, Coach Mike Holovak has been experimenting.

Coach A1 Davis of the Raiders, the Cinderella team of 1963 when they won their final eight games, also discounts the preseason although Oakland came out ahead 3-2. 1:30 K1CKOFF Kick off time is 1:30 p.m. as the Raiders find out if they can take up where they left off. The last team to beat them in the regular season was this same Boston outfit on Oct. 11.

Much of the success rests with the passing of quarterback Tom Flores, the catching of Art Powell and the running of Clem Daniels who set the AFL rushing record last year. Babe Parilli, a former Raider, opens at quarterback for the Patriots. Veterans Larry Garron at fullback and J. D. Garrett of Grambling or veteran Ron Burton with them at halfback.

Boston won the Eastern crown a year ago in a playoff after deadlocking with Buffalo with 7-6-1 records. The victory string gave them a 10-4 season but not enough to overhaul San Diego which finished 11-3. Christiansen does have more manpower than during the time he headed the injury-riddled club in 1963 after succeeding Red Hickey. John Brodie, the broken arm quarterback of last year, is at ull strength and gets a major test. He injured a thumb against Los Angeles last week in the pre-season finale, but it expected to bother him.

Waiting in the wings is rookie George Mira, the All America from Miami of Florida who proved himself a scrambler able to move the team in the pre-season frays. Detroit whipped New York in its pre-season finale 24-10 ending the exhibition season with a 3-1-1 record, the only setback by a 3415 count to Cleveland. The 49ers beat Cleveland 26-7 in the opener and then lost four in a row including a 21-17 de cision to Los Angeles last week A crowd of 30,000 is expected to look for improvement in the San Francisco team. The 49ers posted their poorest year in his tory, a 2-12 affair, for 1963. Detroit gets giant tackle Alex Karras back this season for its fearsome defensive for ware wall.

End Darris McCord weighs in at 250, Karras at 245, Roger Brown at 300 and right end Sam Williams at 235. Defensive halfback Dick (Night Train) Lane had to undergo knee surgery and expected to see action in the early season games. Rookie Bobby Thompson takes over the comer spot. With Brodie in the San Francisco backfield will be Don Lisbon and J. D.

Smith at the running backs and Bernie Casey at the flanker. The 49ers could mount a potent air attack but their running game remains questionable. The kickoff is slated for 1.35 p.m. PDT. Packers Get Another Vote Here; 49ers Picked For Fifth Place Looking over the prospects of National Football League teams leads to one general conclusion: This could be known as the year of the big playoff.

On any given day, any team in the league must be given a chance to beat any other team. The result could be complete confusion. Since the San Francisco 49ers play home-and-home games with the other six teams in their division, plus games with two Eastern Division teams, run through the schedule in the order of appearance. Troppmann feels his strongest position will be at the ends, with the returning Kilcoyne and Smith holding down the starting berths. The Redwood mentor has been pleased wtih the throwing of QB Hutchison and his back-up man Murphy. Other backfield starters should include Dan Salata at left half, Gootherts at full, and either Tucker nr Wagner at the wing. DeBeaubien will be the starting center and Gangler and Slivka will be the No. 1 tackles, according to plans.

Guards to see a lot of action are Gladney, Anderson and Tobin. PICKS DRAKE Troppmann picked Drake, Terra Linda and Novato as the top three teams in the league, being very non-committal on chances this season. have a lot of work to do before our league opener with Troppmann come merited. need a lot of work because of inexperience. is one of, the best working groups had. They have a lot of team spirit and One of the players from last year who is not around this season is Guy Modica who probably would have been the starting halfback. Modica a 10 flat sprinter, left Marin to attend school in Colorado. The Giants again will be running from the wing-T with an unbalanced line. Troppmann is hoping to be able to use both offensive and defensive platoons.

Funds from program will be used for uniforms, equipment, insurance, fees and other expenses, according to Jack Crawford, spokesman for the club. Admission is a 50-cent donation. Dave Scofield, the of announcer for the San Francisco 49ers, will handle the public address system tonight. Following are comments on the six Pop Warner teams by their coaches: Terra Linda Junior Coach Jim Finnegan: squad development over the past month of practice is splendid, especially the strong defensive showing the Junior Trojans up up against other units in recent scrimmages. Among the nine returning veterans who will spark the first unit are starting quarterback John Dohn and ends Chris Hill and John Cullen.

New members of the squad making up the first unit are speedsters Dan McGinnis and Gary Trono at halves and powerful Mike James at. fullback. The first unit is representative of our teams in 1962 and but the remainder of the team is much younger. From the little I have observed in scrimmages it is likely that Redwood and Mill Valley will give us our roughest Novato Junior Hornets Len Genetin: will build around out 10 veterans who are mostly in the first unit. Most of the experience will be in the line.

I am impressed with the progress made by newcomer Mike Matheson who will be our starting quarterback. The other units all look tough so we plan to take them one at a time and not shoot for any one or two. This years squad is not too heavy but the lack of weight is made up in good spirit, good physical condition and we look forward to a lot of fun and several Drake Junior Coach Tony Barbera: veterans from 1963 will assure us of a good defensive unit this year. We have an outstanding quarterback in Dan Fouts, fine ends in Norm Biss and Rick Ehrhart and great linemen in Pat Crabtree, Steve Mack and Gary Glenn. The other squads look tough in scrimmage and perhaps the Tam Junior Indians might prove our biggest hurdle in league Tam Junior Indians Coach Larry Brink: squad is limited in numbers and size this year, no depth, a few returning veterans but we are character.

We are really counting on two of our veterans, whom you will remember from the All-Star Game, Donny Mackin at quarterback and Charles Hamilton at guard. afraid our veteran fullback, Jimmy Huff, may have a weight problem this year. Summing are building, so I plead for mercy from the other units this San Rafael Junior Coach Neele Johnston: 15 veterans returning this year we are going to field a squad that is much better than last year. Team captains Mike Briones and Dave Bariski can keep this unit fired-up and we hope to sustain this spirit as we meet our competition each game throughout Redwood Junior Giants Coach John Pagliaro: feel that until somebody beats us still champions. This team has as much spirit and desire as any of the previous teams I have coached Linebacker Rebel Minutoli again will lead our defense that gave up only three touchdowns last season.

Rebel also is our full back on offense, along with other returning backfield veter ans Pete Carroll, Bruce Jenkin son and Robbie Dorinson. Line men back from last year are center Morgan Doyle, guard Dore Schwab and end Craig DETROIT LIONS: A team of in-and-outers with a good defense and a sputtering offense. On a good day, ball control will win for the Lions. With a few breaks the 49ers could get off a winner on opening day. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: One of the two Eastern teams on the schedule, and the Niners may be lucky to catch them early.

The Eagles had a bad year last year and seem to be having their problems. Not a contending team. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS: The second Eastern team on the schedule, and a strong one. Young players on the way up, but short in depth.

Sophomores can make mistakes, but to win this one the 49ers will have to start early. CHICAGO BEARS: The Champs. The strongest on defense, one of the weakest on offense, but enough to win the close ones. The 49ers took one game from the Bears in 1963; they will not have forgotten. GREEN BAY PACKERS: From the frying pan into the fire.

The fearsome Packers are almost unanimous picks for the title. Strong offense, strong defense, strong coach. said. defeated in exhibition games, but things will be different during the regular season. Their tough schedule will kill them by mid-season.

LOS ANGELES RAMS: If any team in the league has more problems thah the 49ers, this is it. My pick for the new NFL doormat. Too many problems, too little depth. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: Un BALTIMORE COLTS: If he stays healthy, look for a great year from Johnny Unitas. A few shrewd trades have beefed up the protection, and all Unitas needs.

The darkhorse. It would not be too improbable to visualize a three-way tie between Green Bay, Chicago and Baltimore for the Western title. The winning team may have as many as four losses on the season. I pick Green Bay, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Minnesota and Los Angeles in that order. Picking a champ in the Eastern Division is just as tough, and may end in a similar scramble.

The New York Giants and Y. A. Tittle keep winning when everyone picks against them, but not this year. In spite of their loss to the 49ers in (he exhibition season opener, I have to pick the Cleveland Browns for the top spot. The schedule favors them until they have to take on two top Western teams, Detroit and Green Bay, on successive weeks.

After Cleveland, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Giants. St. Louis Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia in that order. And when it comes to the playoff for the championship, take the two top Western teams to beat their Eastern counterparts on successive weeks. That does it.

And so far I missed a single pick on the regular season. BASEBALL LINE SCORES By The Associated Press NATIONAL LEAGUE St. 200 000 003- 5 12 1 Chicago 000 000 0 2 0 Gibson and McCarver; Broglio, Elston (9), Norman (9) and Berteli. 15 10. 7 12 Home runs- St.
