little-known Long Island politician wrested New Republican senatorial nomination from Jacob Javits forcing the 76-year-old incumbent to seek his fifth term under the banner of a third party Yesterday's results also saw incumbent Sen Richard Stone of Florida forced into a Democratic runoff The only other incumbent senators to face challenges easily won renomination Democrat John Durkin in New Hampshire and Republican Paul Laxalt in Nevada presiding supervisor in the town of Hempstead who had hit hard at Javits1 liberalism age and declining health will face Democratic Rep Elizabeth Hohzman in November She defeated three challengers including Bess Meyerson a former Miss America and consumer advocate and ex-New York City mayor John Lindsay polled 56 percent of the vote Alfonse more powerful" Ole Diamond Ole Diamond who gained worldwide fame first for his orneriness and then as the proud papa of the first African elephants born in captivity in the Western Hemisphere died at Knoxville Zoological Park this morning He was 33 The cause of death of the zoo's most famous attraction will not be known for at least 24 hours and the zoo will be closed until further notice He will be buried on the zoo grounds officials said The huge bull appeared well and was eating and drinking when zoo officials looked in at him at II JO last night He died at 9:35 this morning In 1975 zoo veterinarians diagnosed chronic nephritis and issued a prognosis that gave him two or three more years of life at best But when the elephant's two mates Sapphire and Toto became pregnant in 1977 Zoo Director Guy Smith III said that was a diagnosis" On March 2 1978 Sapphire gave birth to Little Diamond gaining worldwide attention in the process At the time a calving barn was under construction at League decided yesterday to invite independent presidential candidate John Anderson along with Carter and Reagan to participate in the first of the league-sponsored debates scheduled for Sept 21 in Baltimore Anderson quickly accepted So did Reagan But Carter through a statement issued by his campaign chairman Robert Strauss refused Carter had insUted that the first debate which one major television network announced last night it-would broadcast be between him and Reagan as the standard bearers of the two major parties "Since Gov Reagan and the League of Women Voters have refused to even discuss the scheduling of a one-on-one debate we are convinced that acceptance of this invitation would preclude any chance of such a one-on-one debate and reservist Rick Fretr The other Eastvold general manager of ultra high frequency (UHF) station WTVK-TV said today he know whether his station will try for the VHF station It did try for years for such a station here but it gave up the fight two years ago WTVK is increasing its power from 1 million to 5 million watts Eastvold said he wants to see how much the increased power will improve the performance of the station before deciding whether to try for the VHF station However he pre Mrs Taylor said Sweetwater was selected as a location for the training sessions because it is about half-way between TVA offices in Knoxville and Chattanooga Another 532000 was spent on "fast track training" personnel seminars in 1979 and 1980 also held in Sweetwater She said fast track training is for tential TVA managers On training programs which started between 1976 and this year and are still in operation TVA spent more than 5900000 for travel and other costs for using other-than TVA facilities the records show The total Diamond made headlines when he became a father but when the first attempts to breed him were made in 1976 there was doubt as to whether he was in breeding condition He welcomed his first mate Sapphire to his enclosure in 1975 by whacking her with his mighty trunk knocking her down an embankment At first it was feared her leg was broken and a portable X-ray unit was summoned from University Hospital to examine her The leg was OK and she obviously made up with her mate and the two shared the same enclosure When Toto arrived in 1976 he whacked her with his trunk but did not give her quite as rough treatment Ole Diamond has always had a reputation as an unruly follow which is why the Ringling Brothers and Bamum and Bailey Circus gave him to Knoxville in 1963 He demolished his enclosure at the for the Tennessee-Tombig-bee Waterway An amendment by Sen John Chafee (R-RL) to delete 5299 million of the funding was defeated 53-38 Clement Says as "undetermined" on the records Those included two Communications Commission (FCC) has allocated a new VHF television channel to Knoxville and three other cities and a Knoxville group expects to apply soon for a license The station here would be Channel 8 A group which calls itself the Organizing Committee headed by James Martin wants the license Martin is president of Plasti-Line and also is president of the Knoxville Symphony The three other cities for which the FCC approved new VHF channels are TVA Has Spent $13 Million on Out-of-Town Meetings and a TVA Policy Conference Retreat at Fairfield Glade involving about 15 employees 52000 retreats at such places as Fall Creek Falls State Park Fairfield Glade and Guntersville State Park records obtained by TVA Director Bob Clement showed The agency spent another 5104000 on training "away from TVA facilities" during those two years and has spent at least 51 million for both training sessions and meeting at other-than TVA installations in the past five years according to the records The expenditures compiled by the Office of Management Services at Clement's request primarily cover transportation and lodging costs as well as payments for use of facilities and training consultants "It was impractical to determine total -costs since expenditures are not accumulated for easy indentification by meetings" Charles Bonine Jr manager of management services said in a letter
