hi 2 Tic KnoivMc News-Senttnel 23 1910 White House Questions Hostages' Health I Deaths Just a week ago Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Ali Rajai said Iran had grown weary of the crisis and he suggested that a negotiated settlement before Christmas was possible But Rajai warned yesterday that the hostage issue will be returned to the Parliament for new decisions if the United States does not meet $24 billion demand for their release Earlier yesterday the speaker of the Iranian Parliament Hashemi Rafsanjani said he did not expect the issue to return to the Parliament noting that it had set the four basic conditions and had already recommended spy trials if the US did not accept them have not yet seen the official US Rafsanjani told a Tehran news conference if the United States is not ready to give us our rights our last act will be a card which was reprinted in The Washington Star contains a coded message She believes the birds were meant to represent her husband Victor Tomseth and Michael Howland the three hostages being held in the Iranian foreign ministry The bird that is highest she believes is meant to be her husband the highest-ranking diplomat who is looking to escape from captivity The events of the past few days appear to have brought the hostage crisis full circle with Iran once again making demands seen here as impossible to meet and with the Carter high blood pressure diabetes so that doses can be tailored to the individual Ory who headed the review team is the chief of the Epidemiologic Studies Branch Family Planning Evaluation Division at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta As well as minimizing cancer risks the report said fears of impaired fertility and poor pregnancy outcomes among women who stop taking the pill have also not been confirmed A long-term British study found that pill use by women who have never had a child may delay conception for some months after they stop taking the contraceptive but that their ultimate ability to have a child is not impaired the report noted NEW YORK (UPI) The birth control pill used by more than 150 million women worldwide in the past 20 years has more health benefits than risks and may even prevent certain types of cancer a new report concludes The overwhelming majority of studies so far have found no evidence that pill use causes cancer of the ovaries uterus or breasts as was earlier thought the report by Dr Howard Ory and associates said yesterday On the contrary studies they examined presented evidence that the pill may protect against ovarian and uterine cancer The report pointed out that cancer in humans can take 15 to 20 or more years to develop and that there are some in the scientific community who maintain that it is too early to proclaim oral contraceptives risk-free But for disease-free women under 30 who do not smoke research shows birth control pills are relatively safe and may even prevent some diseases said the report which reviewed studies on contraceptive safety Women who take the pill are one-fourth as likely to develop benign breast tumors as nonusers one-fourteenth as likely to develop ovarian cysts two-thirds as likely to develop iron deficiency anemia and one-half as likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis the report found The report also said risks that have the new route will be 179 miles shorter than the old one But not the true measure of the improvements The biggest factor is that many motorists have to go to the troublesome junction at aiL And those who do have to go there will have an easier time of it because of the decreased traffic on it McAmis said the opening of the new leg of 1-640 will reduce traffic especially truck traffic by as much as 30 percent at Malfunction Junction He said this will result in a savings estimated at $13 million a year for truckers and other motorists Total cost of the 35-mile segment opened today is $651 million with 90 percent of that coming from the Federal Government and 10 percent from the state Dr Jay Julian rounded up a handful of local members of his UT Band to participate in the opening The band met the Governor and the other walkers at the Western Avenue Interchange and joined the walk The cold made it a good day for fast walking In his remarks at the second tree planting Alexander gave Sansom much of the credit for this and improvements to come to Interstate system He recalled that before he was elected Governor he had asked Sansom what was biggest problem and Sansom had told him it was the Interstate system So after he was elected and after he had chosen Sansom as his transportation commissioner they made Interstate improvements here their first highway priority Alexander praised Knoxvillians for their in waiting for the improvements OS Rep John Duncan told of being in SL Louis about a year ago and asking the AAA Automobile Club there the best route to Knoxville He said he was told not to go through Knoiville that the highway was closed By CARSON BREWER News-Santtnal Staff Writer The western leg of 1-640 is open Some of the curse is off Malfunction Junction Nearly 200 persons walked with Gov Lamar Alexander on a said the opening might even take some of the off (UT football coach) Johnny Alexander recalled that years ago in he and State Transportation Commissioner Bill San-som had established a of opening this section of 1-640 by the end of 1980 He noted with satisfaction that done The next goal is to finish the eastern leg of 1-640 linking it to 1-40 in the eastern part of the city by next Christmas the Governor said And the next goal on the list is to have Malfunction Junction redone by the spring of 1982 before the opening of the Fair The remarks came as he Sansom and most of the Knox County legislative delegation planted a young tree at the Sharps Gap end of the section Alexander said with apparent surprise and disappointment that the tree was a pine not a dogwood He later planted another pine at the southern end of the completed section is nothing worse than a bunch of politicians carrying on and acting like done Alexander said is a Christmas present from the people of
