B6 The Knoxville News-Sentinel Tuesday August 23 1983 24-hour television Some Russian Notes: Sweet and Sour Gets Respect by Associated Press Lindsey Nelson remained a powerhouse with $53 million for the weekend (891 theaters) for a 17-day total of $203 million continued strong with a $4 million weekend (1252) $384 million in 24 days The chilling remained hot with $36 million (1293) for a 10-day total of $127 million Warners also was encouraged by the limited release of Woody which amassed $555236 in only 32 houses over the weekend The husband -wife role-change comedy showed surprising strength: $43 million in 734 theaters for a five-week total of $112 million LOS ANGELES Rodney first starring comedy drew a highly respectable $58 million in its first three days making it the weekend winner at US and Canadian movie theaters The Orion Pictures release had its debut Friday on 1130 screens and the company predicted $9 million for the first week The other summer winner collected an estimated $11 million in 425 theaters for a 31 -day total of $19 million Warner Bros again dominated the late-summer box office with three strong attractions philosophy of the state it is a simple fact that access is encouraged when1 the locals are cut off We travelled the rivers on the Nicolai Dobroljubov a Russian ship made in Hungary and flying a Russian flag Since the crew was Russian and the entire passenger list was American there had to be a number of accommodations The crew made a serious effort to provide excellent service but most of them did not smile a lot about it I do not know who their advisers were on American diet but there were some interesting meals There was a lot of fish And all up and down the rivers one could see fishermen busy at their work I do not think that they were sports fishermen I think they were in quest of food I do not know the source of the breakfast menu but it was interesting Every morning the first breakfast course included cucumbers tomatoes and cheese I like cucumbers or at least I did until about the fifth day on that ship Like all promoters of tourist trips they had to pad things out here and there making tourist attractions of things that hardly merited notice There was for instance a stop at Kamensky Island Kamensky Island is a little sand spit in the Dnieper that the average Russian citizen be caught dead visiting As a matter of fact most of the Russian citizens could be seen enjoying life at their own beaches on the other bank of the river If you do the trip in the order that we did going first to Moscow and then down the river to Odessa and on up to Bucharest you are going to have an exaggerated appreciation of Odessa and Bucharest the same theory baseball players use in swinging several bats before proceeding to the plate with one It feels a lot lighter If you have been in Moscow you will be more easily entertained and are likely to have very kindly feelings about such things as the Odessa Opera House and the quality of life in general in Bucharest where music dancing laughter and the gay life in general seem to abound If you have some relatives who have been taking advantage of the tourist privileges now afforded behind the Iron Curtain let me advise you that the variety of goods available for purchase is severely limited You will doubtless be getting gifts from your travelling relatives but they will run strongly to dolls which are telescopes one inside the other And if you have a drinking uncle he is going to come into a few bottles of vodka because the Russians are pushing the vodka market I think I am apt to have recurring memories of life in Russia for some time I am still having a few recurrent memories of my recent travels with an Alumni Holidays group to Moscow and then to Kiev and down the Dnieper to the Black Sea and up the Danube with stops in Bulgaria and Romania One of the thoughts 1 have had is that all the great urgency to get there is hardly justified We flew from Knoxville to Pittsburgh where we changed planes before continuing to New Kennedy Airport After a wait of several hours we flew nonstop to Frankfurt Germany and after another wait of some hours there we proceeded nonstop again to Moscow By the time I had spent three hours clearing customs there I was in a state of complete fatigue I think I recovered for days I am not sure that 1 have recovered yet In my own personal case I had been involved in an automobile collision a couple of days before departing and I felt that I had just gone 10 rounds with Big John Tate and lost every round I do not recommend the policy of pressing on as a travel motto I think that next time I shall be inclined to stop along the way for rest and recreation There is not much to be said about Moscow except that it is well Moscow It is drab in appearance and attitude It might help to put things in proper perspective if I point out that the attraction drawing the biggest continuous crowd is a mausoleum The Lenin tomb on Red Square has a continuous long line waiting to view what may be the body of Lenin or perhaps a facsimile made up by Madame Tus-saud who has constructed wax recreations of some of the great individuals of history to such a point of perfection that it would be difficult to tell the reproduction from the real thing The Russians say that is Lenin on display at the mausoleum and it may be There are surely a lot of reverent Russians lined up for blocks each day to pay proper homage and there are a lot of tourists lined up because it seems like the thing to do In a classless society no one can be granted a privileged position in the line So they had to devise some special rules The locals are allowed exclusive viewing privileges at the mausoleum until 11 am and then they are no longer permitted in the line At that point Intourist has control which means that the visitors form the line While it is impossible to grant tourists any special privileges and still conform to the California Firm Cancels Proposal To Buy WTVK tion at Ridge consistently the weakest of the three in the ratings in the local market was an ABC affiliate until that network was
