Ileal friends will understand. And when you're invited to a wedding or a shower for people you barely know or the children of casual acquaintances, simply RSVP your regrets. Weddings have become a crowning example of consumerism, greed and the sense of entitlement that has become like a plague in this country.

I cringe every time I hear a TV commercial for a national department store chain ad- Dear Ann Landers: I know lots of teens read your column for advice and they really do take it. Many of them, like me, are members of the Class of 2000. 1 would like to remind them that, as a class, we are receiving a lot of attention. I'd like to warn those who are lucky enough to be on TV or quoted in the newspaper to please stop and think before you speak. It encourages couples to participate with the outrageously shameless closing line, "Dare to get the things you want." Couples in love and committed to a life together don't need to shake down friends, relatives and casual acquaintances to celebrate their love. They should not put their parents or themselves in debt for horse-drawn carriages, an outrageously expensive dinner, fancy dresses, a photographer and two videographers, flowers, fountains and all the other trappings. I'm not anti-wedding, Ann, but I do believe weddings should be small, intimate affairs for close friends and family. They should not be events at which you repay your social obligations or a chance to get everyone you've ever met to furnish your new apartment and help you set up housekeeping. Practical in Minnesota Dear Minnesota: You have written a letter that expresses some lofty views.

I agree wholeheartedly with what you have said, and I hope some brides-to-be will pay attention, but I'm not optimistic. Old traditions die hard. People are going to continue to go into hock to carry them out, come hell, high water and the bill collectors. Ann, I have seen talk shows, read articles and heard reports of some of the antics of the Class of 2000, and instead of feeling proud, I feel ashamed.

Thanks to the few teen-age exhibitionists who go on trashy TV talk shows that shamelessly exploit ignorant people, we are being remembered not as the future of the millennium but as the screw-ups who will some day govern our world. Please, adults, don't lose faith in us. M.R., Albany, N.Y. Dear Albany: I receive a lot of mail from teen-agers, and in my opinion, they are more intelligent, more committed and a lot more principled than we were when we were their age. I am confident that they will do at least as well as we did, if not a whole lot better.

Tradition dies hard Dear Ann Landers: This is for "No Name, No State," who complained about how broke she is because of what it cost her to be a bridesmaid in several weddings. You have said in your column, "No one can take advantage of you without your permission." People need to stop complaining about how out-of-control weddings have become and just start saying "no." If you can't afford to be a bridesmaid, be up-front and admit it. There is nothing wrong with saying, "Congratulations. I am happy for you and wish you all the best. Before I even went to the record store to pick up "Butterfly," Marian Carey's latest release, I made a solemn vow to myself.

I'm promised myself that I was gonna try and get through the review of the CD without mentioning anything about Mariah Carey's separation from her husband, Sony record label head and rumored mobster Tommy Mottola. And I promised I would work really hard at not saying anything about her new album being therapeutic or about it being an outgrowth of the separation. Man, I knew it would be hard, but I had even hoped to avoid at all cost following in the footsteps of other reviewers in saying that the title itself symbolized her "blossoming from her sheltered cocoon of a life into the musical butterfly that we all knew she was." But I just can't do it, because the album is all those things. It's thought-provoking. It's depressing.

It's joyful. It's gloomy. Most of all, it seems to mirror the soul of a young lady shaken by the disintegration of her marriage, reflecting the ups and downs of her trying to deal with it. If you're into that kind of stuff, pick it up. If not, avoid it like the plague.

Definitely different than anything I've ever heard from the "Queen of Pop this album symbolizes a maturity that's been a long time in coming for Carey. Gone are the overly commercial, safe tracks, and in their place are songs with a grittier, edgier, more soulful feel. Obvious hits are the funk-laced first single, "Honey," and the infectious "Fourth of July," but other innovative tracks are definitely worth a listen. Tracks like "Breakdown," where Carey even speeds up her singing flow with rappers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony in a song about the end of a relationship. I only have one real problem with this project, and that is that it continues a disturbing trend in the music industry.

Why is it that every album that comes on the market these days seems to feature a cover of a song that, in its original state, was almost perfect in the first place? On "Butterfly," Carey teams up with Dru Hill to cover Prince's "The Beautiful Ones," and while they did a good job with it, they will always lose when the inevitable comparisons are made with the original. It was a classic, for heaven's sake. Leave it alone. Billy Tyus is a staff writer for the Herald Review. Call him at 421-6986.
