A Mid-Income Living Costs Up 98 Percent in 1981 ies for a family including a 38-year-old full-time worker his non-working wife a 13-year -old boy and an 8-year -old girl At the middle-income or intermediate level the budget showed a IS 3 percent increase in Social Security and disability payments and a 175 percent increase in personal income taxes Other major increases were the cost of transportation Ill percent and medical care 107 percent The entire $25407 budget for the middle-income family was: Food $5843 up 49 percent housing $5843 up 86 percent transportation $2372 up 121 percent clothing $1333 up 32 percent personal care $508 up 79 percent medical care $1443 up HL7 percent other family consumption $1196 up 78 percent: Social Security and disabiU ity $1703 up 19J percent personal income taxes $4443 up 173 percent and other items $1021 up 67 percent The department said that while personal income taxes rose considerably the jump was 7 percentage points less at the middle-income level than the previous year The huge Social Security increase the department said resulted from both an increase in the contribution rate in 1981 and the increase in the maximum
