SUNDAY OCTOBER 28 1949 WICHITA' DAILY TIMES PART ONE Underrated Rice Owls Bounce Texas From Unbeaten List With 7-6 Upset PAGE 14 Army Flattens Blue Devils Fenimore Stages One-Man Show As Oklahoma Ags Whip TCU 25-12 Tulane's Green Wave Rolls Over Mustangs NEW ORLEANS La Oct 27 (JP) The Green Wave of Tulane which had been at low ebb this football year came rolling back today to engulf the hapless Southern Methodist University Mustangs of Dallas 19-to-7 before 25000 fans It was the first victory of the year for Tulane whose best performance of the season had been aO 6-to-6 tie with Florida And it was Texas Tech Wins In Last Half from Leon Joslin to Norman Cox TCU took the lead soon' afterward when a pass interception by Carl Koch set up a touchdown made by Cox on plunge over guard The Aggies grabbing the lead back when Fenimore pitched to Cecil Hankins for 14 yards and another six-pointer The teams entered the second period with the Aggies on top 13-12 as the result of a point after touchdown by Neill Armstrong Both of efforts had been blocked In the third period a 27-yard dash by Fenimore set up another touchdown with Jim Reynolds pounding over from the 18-yard stripe The final Aggie score was made by Fenimore racing 14 yards around end and blasting one yard over tackle early in the fourth quarter had to leave the game the crowd gave him a standing ovation Bob played more today than usual Until this afternoon he had ranged from 27 minutes to 41 He got in about 48 this afternoon But it was no consolation to the Frogs that Oklahoma deemed it advisable to keep Fenimore in the game longer than in other contests It just made everything tougher It was a wild offensive battle with Oklahoma plainly superior but with the Frogs proving dangerous to the Aggie unbeaten untied record until early in the fourth period In the opening 12 minutes four touchdowns were rolled up Fenimore went around right end for 13 yards and the first score and TCU getting a touchdown less than a minute later on 51-yard pass Northwestern Upsets Purdue EVANSTON 111 Oct 27 downtrodden Wildcats victorious in only one game this season registered a stunning upset today in overpowering highly favored Purdue 26-14 to knock the Western Conference leaders out of the ranks of the undefeated untied teams The bruising battle witnessed by a homecoming crowd of 42000 was one of the most viciously fought in the Big Ten in 20 years The Boilermakers tied at 7-7 in the first period then beaten the rest of the way were guilty of unnecessary roughness which cost them 60 yards in penalties compared to 10 for the Wildcats The magnificent line play of the Wildcata fn which Stanley Gorski West! Hansen and Max Morris stood out brought about in the downfall of Purdue which a week ago routed the powerful and favored Ohio State 35-13 The Wildcat line restrained Purdue to 134 yards on the ground under-rated Rice Institute 7-6 in a Southwest Conference game before 23000 howling customers Texas was in the hole most of the afternoon and was edged by Rice in most departments Rice tallied in the second period as big Anderson a back skirted end from the one-foot line and Bob Nemir playing his last game fcr Rice converted Texas stormed back in the final period on a beautifully executed pass play scoring All-America End Hubert Bechtol But Guard Tom conversion attempt was wide costing the Steers a possible tie Rice was holding the ball and driving back into Steer territory as the game ended Texas saved itself from a possible worse drubbing by staving off a second period Rice bid that carried to the Texas 6 where the defense tightened and badly rushed Rice's passing attempts In the fourth peribd Texas made a long drive from its 20 after field goal attempt was partially blocked by Center Dick Harris to the Owl 4 On fourth down Owl Tackle Robert Zelsman threw Byron Gillory for a loss Passes Stopped Texas edged Rice on first downs 11 to 10 but the Owls had a slight margin on rushing gaining 151 yards to Texas 145 The Texas passing attack heretofore a po tent weapon was relatively inef fective garnering only 63 yards Rice racked up 43 yards in the aerial department Big Jim Plyler Steer punter and Huey Keeney Rice back turned in fine punting performances each hitting the coffin corner at times Rice winner of only one start cut of five prior to the Steer game generally was rated to lose But the Owls were hot from the start Holding the Steers well in the hole for the first quarter they made capital of 54-yard quick-kick which went out on the Texas seven Fumble Helps Byron Gillory fumbled and End Jack McBride of Rice grabbed the ball on the Rice 20 Nemir shot through center for a first on the seven Anderson carried twice to the one-foot line and then on fourth down went over for a touchdown untouched by Texas tacklers Nemir converted James Lowrey a substitute back picked up two first downs in succession and Gillory 'carried to the 26 In the fourth period one of punts died on the Rice 31 Texas made two fruitless plays but then hit pay dirt with a honey On a double handoff Back Fred Brechtel faked a run and then kit End Bechtol with a forward good for a touchdown When Harrell's conversion attempt failed Rice took over and held the ball lor the gun The lineup: LUBBOCK Oct 27 Texas Tech came to life in the last half here Saturday night with big Walt Schlinkman scoring twice to edge past a fighting West Texas State Teachers College eleven 12 to 6 before 6000 fans West Texas scored the first time it gots its hands on the ball with Left Halfback Eck Hunter tossing to Don Leach on a 50-yard pass play The Buffs led in the first three minutes Throughout the first half the Buffs had things their own way and had the Raiders reeling several times With the start of the second half the Raiders came to life Sooners Win Over Kansas Stale 41-13 MANHATTAN Kan Oct 27 (UP) A 99-yard Oklahoma run-back of an intercepted pass for a touchdown broke Kansas State early offensive today and the Sooners went on to win 41-13 before 9000 fans Youthful Kansas State made up its mind to lose to nobody and in the first quarter shoved across two touchdowns and were going for a third eany in the second period It was then that A1 Needs Oklahoma back snared one of frosh Dick passes and ran untouched 99 yards to score From then on the Sooners were unstoppable Louisiana State Takes Vanderbilt 39-7 BATON ROUGE La Oct 27 Louisiana State University's Tigers unleashed a dazzling display of power and deceptiveness to defeat a rugged but out-manned Vanderbilt Commodore eleven 39 to 7 Saturday night before an estimated 20000 Battle To Draw EAST LANSING Mich Oct 27 (JP) Michigan State and Marquette fought to a bitter 13-13 tie in a football battle here today with all the touchdown acoring in the last half Commemorative IFS3 This commemorative show likes of which Horned Frog Stadium never caw before today as he climbed out of a sickbed to conduct the Oklahoma Aggies to a 25-12 victory over fighting Texas Christian If Bob was ill the Horned Frogs like to encounter him while he was in good health To the amazement and of 15000 fans blazing Bob romped to two touchdowns passed for another and kept the Frogs in hot water all afternoon as he rolled up 178 yards on the ground and 86 in the air In the final minute when Fenimore after making a 19-yard run around left end to take the ball to the Frog four was injured and Unsteady Bears Lose to Aggies By DAVE CHEAVENS COLLEGE STATION Texas Oct 27 (JP) The Baylor Bears noted for being the most unpredictable team in the Southwest Conference proved it again today by fumbling away a ball game 19 to 13 to Texas After playing smart hard hitting and heads up ball through the first period leading 7 to 0 at the Bears let down and alert Aggies collected on every miscue first score came on a pass interception and a 55-yard run by Sammie Pierce late in the second period The Aggies bounced right back early in the third after a fumble by Pierce put them in scoring position Bob Goode made it in two trys Grant Darnell of the Aggies literally took the ball away from Billy Kimbrough for the touchdown that put in the lead a few minutes later in the second period A muff by Stuart Gordon Baylor end put the Aggies on the Baylor 25 and set for another score This one was by Goode also It was the last score but it was enough although Baylor got back into the ball game in the fourth period with a nice pass from Pierce to Wesley Deucker topped by an off-tackle slant by George Sims for the touchdown The unadorned statistics tell the story of the ball game The Baylor team showed itself to be plenty willing and tough but young and inexperienced The Aggies were wise waiting for the breaks that they made the most of They pounced on five Baylor fumbles and held the ball themselves when playing good football meant winning They emerged from the game with 152 yards gained rushing to 114 eight first downs to the six The first half produced none of the see-saw football that made the second half a nightmare for the Baylorites The Bears did start on a march downfield that came to nothing on the Aggie 40 with a fumble by Bobby Griffin early in the game Goode turned in the prettiest run a dash from his own six to the 50 where he reversed and was nailed when it looked as if he might be run out of bounds Texas vs Aggies Game Is Sellout AUSTIN Oct 27 UP) There are no more tickets for the Texas University-Texas College game Business managers Ed Olle of Texas and Pete Jones of Texas are authorities for the statement which means that a capacity crowd of approximately 39-000 will attend the Nov 29 game at College Station The only chance for a Johnny-come-lately to get a ticket here is sketched by Olle as follows: In his safe are 4300 ducats which are being held for Texas student blanket tax holders These will be placed on sale Nov 19 and remain on sale until Nov 26 If the students da not take up all these tickets by noon Nov 26 the remainder will be sold to the general public the fourth loss of 1945 lor SMU Outweighing Tulane 12 pounds to the man Southern Methodist get its vaunted running game going SMU scored and converted in the first period and was held scoreless lor the balance of the game Tulane cracked out two touchdowns in the second and a third in the third quarter to win easily The Texas team took the lead in the first period when Gene Wilson on a magnificent end-around-end play fought his way 44 yards down the field to the Tulane 16 Two plays later Howard Maley skipped around left end to score Then Tulane took over and ran the show An interception by Quarterback Crouch tied the score One play after the kickoff an SMU fumble was recovered on the six and Dick Hoot tallied on the second play from the two Crouch intercepted another pass in the third period to run the total up to 19 to 7 the final score SMU tried to catch up with passes desperate passes They threw 34 of them but completed only 14 In the final minute of play SMU was pushing rapidly toward the Tulane goal when Billy Mizell completed six straight aerials But his seventh was intercepted on the Tulane 15 and the game ended a play later SMU got the best of the running 122 yards to 105 but only on the first period touchdown was the running game even nearly effective The outstanding defensive man was Leonard Bowers Tulane center and Maley Mizell and Moon shared backfield honors for the losers -0 Michigan Finishes Strong for 19-0 Win CHAMPAIGN 111 Oct 27 (JP) Michigan perked in the final quarter to shove across three touchdowns for a 19-0 victory over Illinois before an Illini homecoming throng of 54572 today The Wolverines opened their scoring when End Bill Ford ran 15 yards with a blocked kick and then tallied on a short buck by Walt Teninga and defeating a stubborn University of Idaho football team 21 to 0 Halfback Bill Lippincott scored two Cougar touchdowns in the first period running back an intercepted pass 25 yards for one score and plunging seven yards through the line for another 4 Harvard Scores Over Coast Guard Academy CAMBRIDGE Mass Oct 27 (JP) Scoring in every period but the third football team routed the Coast Guard of Pennsylvania in the last 25 seconds Seized by an almost-fatal attack of fumbleitis and outplayed most of the afternoon the miracle men from Annapolis pulled themselves together for two whirlwind touchdowns in the final period They swept 60 yards and 80 yards in the last six and one-half minutes to win a game that most of the stunned 73000 spectators figured Penn had won Navy set off that winning last-minute assault after a questionable bit of signal-calling by Penn gave the Middies the ball on their own 20-yard line With the score tied 7-7 and two minutes left Penn decided to try for Rebels 19 to 0 MEMPHIS Oct 27 VP) A big hard-hitting Arkansas team jolted Mississippi's Rebels with a 58-yard aerial thrust in the second period Saturday and then lashed over the kayo with two touchdowns in the final quarter to win before 23000 sweltering fans 19 to 0 The victory In neutral Crump Stadium was the third in six starts for the Razorbacks and it was the second loss for Ole teenagers There were just two minutes to go in the first half and Mississippi was holding its own when Calvin Smith tossed a 43-yard pass to Mike Schumchyk big Arkansas end Schumchyk made the catch over his left shoulder and ambled the remaining 15 yards for the score Early in the fourth period the stronger Razorbacks marched 73 yards by land for a second marker Smith scoring from the two Harold Henson a sub back iced the verdict a few minutes later when he intercepted one of Mississippi Johnny left-handed heaves on the Ole Miss 40 and scampered the whole way for the final tally Big John Hoffman whose smashing thrusts off the tackles contributed much to the Arkansas triumphs was able to convert only his second of three place-kicking tries The superiority was shown in the statistics which gave them 11 first downs to four for Mississippi and 296 yards rushing to 84 for the Rebels Only twice was Mississippi able to pierce 30-yard line In the first period a 31-yard sprint by Bullback Bob McCain put the Rebels on the Razorbacks' 25 but they could go no farther In the third they pushed up to 30 but a 15-yard holding penalty and a hard-charging Razorback line pushed them back to midfield Huskies Upset Dope With Win Over Trojans SEATTLE Oct 27 from behind in the fourth period the University of Washington Huskies scored a surprise 13 to 7 triumph over the favored University of Southern California Trojans in a Pacific Coast Conference football game before a capacity crowd of 40000 today 1 11 a Ohio State Trounces Minnesota 20 to 7 MINNEAPOLIS Oct 27 A fighting
