higher education is at its lowest level in 15 years Comfort and some say even quality are casualties in the efforts to get more students School officials are scroung-' lng to find enough teachers and rooms Shelby State has had to hire 150 extra part-time teachers and lease space at Baptist Memorial Hospital State Tech offered three classes in hallways and asked a number of administrators to put in doubleduty in the classroom including Jack-son dean of the college Ms Costs executive assistant to president Meanwhile quirks in state funding formulas inadvertently are punishing the two schools for their success Much of State growth is in night classes State Tech has the most popular evening program However state formulas that determine needs for classroom space use only daytime enrollment figures Those formulas show State Tech has plenty of classroom space According to the formulas Shelby State also has ample classroom space but the formulas add all the space at Shelby three campuses That means no separate listing for the bursting Southeast Crater where 1600 students (up from 1100 last fall) are using 10 classrooms in leased space at Mendenhall Square Mall By comparison East High Aquino in effect extended the American stay at Subic Bay Sunday by announcing a national referendum on the base treaty Following Mrs Aquino's announcement the Philippine Senate voted 12-11 today to
