Scrambling over rugged terrain hiking off the familiar path gives her a sense of accomplishment it gives my voice a chance to However scaling obstacles is more than a hobby It is a profession The vital steepest climb was begun in 1965 and while plateaus have been gained there is still unclaimed land to be taken This latest mountain's name is women's rights and Sheila Tobias numbers among members of the original expedition along with Kate Millett and Ti-Grace Atkinson To I-Tiid Tli cm SHEILA TOBIAS a rights lecturer and founding member of the National Organization for Women at Cornell University was in Knoxville yesterday to cxoPcise her voice She met with leaders of the rights movement on the "UT campus to discuss local obstacles and to instruct from personal experience Following a breakfast meeting with student leaders interested in the movement she spoke with members of the Task Force on Women at UT and addressed the University Senate on in Higher Higher education is a subject she is qualified to discuss She received the BA degree in history from Radcliffe in 1957 After five years in Europe as a publicist and journalist she returned to graduate school and received the master's degree from Columbia University She served on the staff at City College of New York and was assistant to the vice president for academic affairs at Cornell She Is the first woman associate provost at Wesleyan University Middletown Conn previously an all-male institution job was created in response to agitation by faculty wives Wesleyan was going to take in coeds and the faculty wives insisted that the faculty be co-edu-cated as well as the student The original II women staffers at Wesleyan will expand to 33 next year an accomplishment Sheila Is proud of rights has not always been a concern but came about because of personal discrimination interest began at Cornell and grew out of an experience in politics I was working in a political campaign doing typing and I felt that I was not being taken Blaming Self THAT FIRST experience with discrimination brings about self-doubt she believes "If you know about discrimination when you first encounter it you feci the problem is YOU When I get a promotion I felt it was my fault that I was too young not good enough And then of course I was single until I was 35-years-old a position often viewed as The fiery young woman give up Her response was to organize a four-day conference with panel discussions and appearances by Betty Friedan and Kate Millett Out of this conference grew a NOW chapter and a course in women studies The need for such a course was pointed up when 300 students signed up for the introductory class the first time it was offered Personal loyalty on part was evidenced by the work the personal funds which went into the planning Sheila Tobias lives her beliefs Her husband an environmentalist at the University of Connecticut shares them His dedication to the cause prompted him to give up a position and follow his wife to Connecticut when she received good job offer She is optimistic about the future of rights "It is the most profound revolution of the century and will change more lives than any other To doubters she points to increased awareness in rights to legislative fruits already in hand amount of legislation passed since 1964 is astonishing Forty million dollars has been paid by industry on the basis of sex discrimination While this may not seem much when compared to the GNP it has had an effect Industry has learned to be The American system is responsive to interest groups she feels and provides a political avenue for action on the part of rights devotees Begin With State WOULD advise women to run for state office for three pragmatic reasons It is easier than the national leveL The toughest- most powerful men in the nation are playing that game Secondly it is possible to commute to your home while in Washington this is a problem And third many problems such as welfare day care abortion and contraception can be handled effectively on a state Impact on this presidential conventions by advocates of rights will be negligible play much of a role This is the year that more women will be at the conventions will be recognizing each other and getting together Afterwards they will go home and set up a kind of network for action In 1976 the picture may be Political action may follow any number of courses Connecticut we are going to purchase ads to show our state legislators' voting record on rights We know what impact these ads will have wait and Women's studies courses day care compensation for the homemaker all are concerns she shares with other men and women dedicated to the fight TTie Road Ahead THE GREATEST obstacle facing the rights movement is what Shelia Tobias calls "the long or focusing the movement toward a long-term commitment first the response was heady emotional The long haul calls for different strategy We have to keep encouraging and maintain a holding position We have to readjust to long haul NowsSonHtef Staff Photo Sheila Tobias associate provost at Wesleyan University discusses rights over breakfast alUT Today Sheila Tobias is back home in Middletown Conn teaching a studies course This weekend she will travel to Denver where she will be commencement speaker at a small college "The president refused to accept a woman commencement speaker He was uptight about said the former journalist was the only woman he would agree on and I really thought someone else should speak But after thinking it over I
