i He was preceded in death by his parents and a half brother, WASHINGTON (AP) Sen. Pete Domenici would not relent Thursday: Did orders come from the White House to expand the use of corn-based ethanol without clear environmental benefits? "My cynicism is abundant on this one," said Domenici, "It is percolating out of my ears." Tag-teaming with Sen. Bennett Johnston, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, he bore down on Mary Nichols of the Environmental Protection Agency. At issue was, a proposal, announced in December and debated endlessly, to require that 30 percent of the new clean-fuel market come from ethanol blended fuels. The EPA, under the Clean Air Act, is prescribing a new gasoline formula for nine parts of the country where the air is dirtiest primarily California, Texas, the Northeast and the upper Midwest.

"There was no direction that I was aware," said Nichols. Federal grants fund new police officers WASHINGTON (AP) Four Illinois police agencies including forces in Silvis and Cairo will share about $1.1 million in federal grants aimed at placing more officers on the beat, officials said Thursday. The community policing grants will be spread over three years and will allow the agencies to hire 17 new officers. In Southern Illinois, Cairo will get $185,000 to hire four new officers. State police efforts in Southern Illinois will also be boosted with $352,000 for six new officers.

State police will use the money to target drug distributors and set up community policing groups in local communities. Targeted are Alexander, Marion, Richland, Saline, Union and Williamson Later, she added: "I think the issue and I believe it an appro priate issue for the administration and for the EPA to consider is that market is going to be one which is open, competitive and which fosters other objectives that we have." Those objectives include helping commercialize more advanced technologies that provide greater environmental and energy benefits. She did not sway Johnston, D-La. "It's clear this is a mistake," he said. He urged a delay either of the EPA's decision, due at the end of June, or the effective date, Jan.

1, 1995. Johnston found too many unanswered questions such as how the proposal would affect oil suppliers and refineries for the plan to move ahead. Nichols said the EPA would not move forward until it had answered his questions. 501 If you -have tower back pain, respiratory or circulation problems, you must see our adjustable bed. $909 Twin, Four sizes available: Twin.
