Info or Hotels Call 800-74-RIVER 0P that the feeling in her heart is different today than it was when I was a child. To punish her for something that happened 32 years ago would make no sense. Her total lack of interest in us when we were growing up must have hurt our parents, but I don't feel cheated, nor do I hold any resentment toward her. Grandma is the one who lost out. I write to her regularly, and my children visit her during the year.

I owe it to my parents to treat Grandma with respect and will do so as long as she lives. Deep in the Heart of Texas Dear Deep: Your letter is yet another example of "what you sow, expect to reap." Your grandmother is fortunate that you have a forgiving heart. I applaud your generosity of spirit. It may be an allergy Dear Ann Landers: Please tell your readers that when people have a very strong dislike for a certain food, they may actually be allergic to it. Several years ago, my middle-aged sister who "didn't like" fish had a diagnostic test involving a dye that apparently used a fish extract.

She had been asked in advance if she was allergic to fish and said, "No." Well, she nearly died from an allergic reaction to the Another sister always got a "backache" when she was around someone who had been drinking. She found out she was allergic to both wood and grain alcohol. One drop makes her tongue and throat swell. Sometimes, an irrational avoidance of certain foods, may mask an allergy. When people say they don't like something, be aware of this possibility, and don't pressure them.

Been There in Hayward, Calif. Dear Hayward: Another example of a wise old adage "Sometimes, the body knows better than the mind." Thanks for a letter that will educate millions. Lonesome? Take charge of your life and turn it around. Write for Ann Landers' booklet, "How to Make Friends and Stop Being Lonely." Send a self-addressed, long, business-size envelope and a check or money order for $4.25 (this includes postage and handling) to: Friends, co Ann Landers, Box 11562, Chicago, IL 60611-0562. Ann Landers, columnist with Creators Syndicate, is published daily.

Dear Ann Landers: My brother-in-law, "Preston," recently shot and killed my father's dog. Preston lives in my parents' house, and he shows no remorse. He shot the little cocker spaniel because when his son tried to take a ball away from the dog, it nipped him. We called the police and animal control, but neither showed any interest in following through. My sister supports her husband and does not feel that he was wrong to shoot the dog.

Meanwhile, all the grandchildren are mourning the loss of their beloved pet, even the child who was bitten. I don't think this brutal deed should go unpunished. Is there anything I can do? Crying in Nevada Dear Nevada: I doubt that anything can be done about the dog shooting. Preston, I'm sure, felt the children were in danger of being seriously mauled or he would not have resorted to using a gun. Too bad Preston could not have found a more humane solution.

Grandma has change of heart Dear Ann Landers: I'd like to respond to "Sad Son in N.C.," whose mother rejected her grandchildren and didn't want to spend Saturday Free Giant Fireworks Show! My grandmother was the same way. When I was born, she told my parents she would not be a baby sitter. When my siblings and I visited her, we were instructed to stay in another room and not disturb the adults. I didn't know any better and assumed this was normal. We played with her dog and brought along our own games.

My parents never said a negative word about Grandma, nor did they point out that she had ignored us. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized we hadn't spent any time together and that she was like a stranger to us. I now have children of my own, and Grandma wants desperately to be a part of their lives. I know A Family For Me tleefinos rrr 7 THURSDAY, Sept. 2 Early Bird Kiwanis Club, 6:45 a.m., Decatur Club.
