17-17 halftime tie The Racers had opened the scoring with 8:23 left in the first on a 1-yard touchdown run by Patrick White That play ended an eight-play 76yard drive fueled by two long passes by Proctor The Tigers bounced back immediately with help from Marcus Dowdell who returned kickoff 41 yards to the 49 Nine plays later Flournoy made it 7-3 with a 24-yard field goal with 3:22 left in the first Tennessee State stopped Mur-on four plays in its next lve then marched down the field again Hines engineered a 53-yard drive and cashed it in himself with a 4-yard touchdown run with four seconds left in the first giving TSU a 167 lead But Murray capitalized on an Interception of Hines by James Burr on Tennessee 34 with 1231 left in the second Proctor made it count six plays later with a 9-yard touchdown throw to Arterbum to make it 14-10 with 10:29 left in the half Then Hines put on some fireworks of his own with a 40-yard touchdown throw to David Sadler with 437 left and TSU was up 17-14 before kick tied it up at the half By Lynn Zlnser Staff I Tennessee State quarterback Chauncey Hines had done all he could to outdo Murray State's storied leader Michael Proctor but he could only watch as Proctor undid all his work Proctor launched a 41-yard pass to save a drive and then ran in 9 yards for the touchdown on the next play to forge 27-24 victory over the Tigers Saturday in front of 8879 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium a good quarterback but I feel I'm just as Hines said hear all uout Hines who passed for a career-high 234 yards had a chance to hog the limelight until Proctor snatched it away with seven minutes left in the game Tennessee State held a 24-20 lead and had the Racers ingly stopped at their own 49 The defense had just sacked Proctor for the fourth time leaving him facing a third-and-13 But Proctor a 64 204-pound senior showed he did not earn the Ohio Valley Conference total career offense record by giving up Instead he reared back and lofted a ball to Patrick White who tumbled down to the 9 ensuing touchdown run with 6:23 left sealed Tennessee fata It also overshadowed a three-touchdown day by Hines who had put the Tigers ahead with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Pa- under his average this year After battling to a 17-17 halftime tie Mumnr (5-2 2-1 in the OVC) could only manage a 45- Jard field goal by Greg Duncan i the second half until Proctor performed his heroics "Patrick has had trouble catching the ball the past couple of weeks so it was to his credit that he came down with Murray coach Mike Mahoney said The defense also rose the occasion in the fourth quarter despite giving up 424 yards in offense to the Tigers It held TSU (2 63 in the OVC) scoreless in the fourth squelching two final drives The defenders allowed only 259 yards but one big play the 41-yard completion sent them into the locker room shaking their heads defense is responsible for seeing that we TSU coach Joe Gilliam said "The responsibility is to score
