Scott Nagy named head hoop coach EDWARDSVILLE Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville men's assistant basketball coach has been named the head coach at South Dakota State.

It will be a return trip to Brookings, S.D., for the 28-year-old Nagy, who was previously an assistant at South Dakota State from 1991 to 1993. Nagy has been an assistant under Southern Illinois-Ed-wardsville head coach Jack Margenthaler for the past two seasons. A native of Champaign, Nagy earned a bachelor's degree at Delta State in 1988 and added a master's degree from the University of Illinois in 1990 as a graduate assistant. he hasn't pitched very long, and he hadn't gone more than five innings before. So we weren't going to push him any farther." Nomo held the Giants scoreless on one hit over five innings in his major league debut.

In his next start, he was tagged for seven runs and three homers at Coors Field. He no-hit St. Louis for four innings in his Dodgers debut, but left after walking seven and allowing three unearned runs. "He threw everything for strikes, and I was impressed by that," Pittsburgh outfielder Jacob Brumfield said. "I've seen him twice on tape and he wasn't throwing a lot of strikes.

So I told myself to take a lot of pitches and I took too many pitches." fl PAIN FREE Roger Clemens threw without pain again Thursday and is on schedule to make his first start for the Red Sox on June 2, Manager Kevin Kennedy said. Clemens has been in extended spring training in Fort Myers, since the start of the season because of a muscle strain in his right shoulder. After resting for 10 days, the shoulder healed and it was just a matter of getting back into playing shape, team doctor Art Pappas said. Clemens threw 70 pitches at about 80 percent velocity in a simulated game Thursday. He will Hideo Nomo isn't just a pitcher, he's an event.

After Nomo struck out 14 in seven shutout innings against Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, Dodgers Manager Tommy La-sorda said it reminded him of Fer-nandomania '81. "It's worse. It's really worse, believe me," Lasorda said. Pittsburgh rallied for a 3-2 victory after Nomo left the game. He doesn't have a decision in four starts and has a 3.48 ERA.

"I'm not frustrated," Nomo said through interpreter Michael Oku-mura. "But I'm a little disappointed because I want to pick up wins for the team." Dodger Stadium is different when the 26-year-old rookie starts. "I came to the ballpark at 1:30 today and there were 15 guys out there with cameras waiting on him," Lasorda said. About 85 Japanese reporters chronicle his every move. Nomo's strikeouts were the most in the majors this year.

The only hits he allowed were a third-inning single by Mark Parent and a sixth-inning double by pinch-hitter Steve Segues. He left after 106 pitches with a 2-0 lead, but Rudy Seanez, Omar Daal and Todd Williams allowed the Pirates to rally. "He didn't have any pitch limit," Lasorda said. RANGERS MAKE DEAL The Texas Rangers made a deal to upgrade their organizational pitching depth Thursday, acquiring righthander Domingo Jean from the Houston Astros for minor league catcher Roger Luce.

Jean was assigned to the Rangers' Class AAA farm team in Oklahoma City. Luce, who was on the suspended list for Texas' Class AA minor league team at Tulsa, has been assigned to the Astros' extended spring training program. The 26-year-old Jean was 2-1 with a 6.59 ERA in three starts for the Astros' Class AAA farm team. bm Free Estimates Limited Time Offer 422-7850 MOUNTAIN CROSS BIKES For A Great Car, WEREFWfc BICYCLES Truck See Or BtatLE CHARLIE LONG IN TAYLORV1LLE S3om. Ironically, White was a bat boy for the Barons when they won the Southern League championship six years ago. It was always his dream to play at "The Met," and he no doubt would have been one of the starting pitchers in the finals. "The chance to play on this field would have blown his mind," Casey Dunn said, gazing out from the third-base dugout. "We're sort of living his dream because he can't." AT COHN FURNITURE SALE! Reg.

Only naturally formed pearls of finest quality are used by Add-a-Pearl, At University Hospital, Peggy White hasn't been far from her son's side since the April 30 wreck. Tears well in her eyes when she thinks about Rhett missing not only the state championship series, but those joyful weeks of a high school senior about to graduate the parties, signing of annuals, the walk down the aisle and the turn of the tassel. "I know 10 years from now it won't be that big a deal," she said. "But to an 18-year-old, those things are a big deal." Rhett has watched baseball games on television from his hospital bed, but his mother tries to downplay what's going on a few miles away.

"I've tried not to talk about it a lot because I know he misses it," she said. "He'd been looking forward to playing in the state championship (as a senior) for four years. I hope he's not thinking about that, but I think he is." Back at the field, Casey Dunn tries to cope with his own feelings of guilt. He was driving the car that wrecked 2V2 weeks ago, losing control when he turned his head away from the road for one fleeting second. "Right after it happened, I got to him first," said Dunn, the coach's son and Vestavia's starting catcher.

"He was spitting up blood and biting his tongue. I didn't ever think I would make it." Casey wonders how he would have coped if his teammate had not survived. But now, as each day brings heartening news of Rhett's recovery, those pangs of guilt are lessening in the catcher's heart. "The better he gets, the better I get," Casey said. "The fact that he's doing better, I've started to feel better about what happened.

I'm never going to forgive myself for what I did. It was my fault. But the fact that he's doing better takes a lot of burden off me." The 6A championship is being played at Hoover Metropolitan the gift that grows in Matching Loveseat 0 1' IP79988 beauty and value as you add to it year after year. The starter neck BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Sammy Dunn barks out orders with the intensity of a drill sergeant.

"You look like you've never played this game before," the coach yells at one player. "Your butt was in the dugout. Go over there and see if you can find it," he chastises another after an errant swing. On the field, everything appeared normal for the Vestavia High School baseball team as it practiced this week for the Class 6A state championship series. Vestavia is one of the state's top teams, having won three of the last four titles in the state's largest classification and setting a school record for victories this year.

But never has the team been through a season like this. Less than three weeks ago, four of the players were returning from a college game when their car swerved off the road and tumbled end over end. All were hurt, the most seriously left-handed pitcher Rhett White. Thrown through the windshield, White wasn't expected to live through the night. Doctors knew of no one who had survived his type of liver injuries.

The damage to his lungs has a 50 percent mortality rate. Brain damage was feared, not to mention an assortment of broken bones. "That Sunday night, the doctors told us they didn't think he was going to make it," Dunn said. "At 2 in the morning, they said to prepare his mother for the worst. Then at 6 o'clock that morning, they said he was getting better." White continues to improve, though he is still a long way from what is expected to be a full recovery.

His broken jaw is wired shut, and he is heavily sedated to allow his myriad injuries, including two broken hips, to heal. Fortunately, the bruising on his brain has dissipated. For his teammates, who begin the best-of-3 championship series against Daphne High today, White is never far from their thoughts. His name is still announced when the rosters are blared over the loudspeaker. His jersey still hangs in the dugout.

"No matter how much better Rhett is getting, we don't ever want to forget what happened 'till he's out of the hospital and throwing again," Dunn said. "We're going to keep praying hard for him." 1 fmWJRCRfflTi3 Save big on one! Save even more when you buy the matching set!
