Here's a familiar pairing: Florida State vs. Tennessee for the national championship.

The Seminoles (9-0) remained in first place in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings, released Monday, and the defending national champion Volunteers (7-1) jumped from fifth to second. The final BCS standings on Dec. 5 determine which teams play in college football's designated national title game the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4. The standings are based on a formula that considers The Associated Press media poll and the USA TodayESPN coaches' poll, eight computer rankings, strength-of-schedule and number of losses.

Last season, Tennessee won the national title with a 23-16 win over Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl in the first year of the BCS setup. Virginia Tech (8-0) remained in third place despite Penn State's drop from second to seventh after the Nittany Lions (9-1) were beaten by Minnesota. A weak schedule, rated just 60th of 114 Division I-A teams, prevented the Hokies from advancing. Florida State's schedule was rated 16th toughest; Tennessee's ninth. Rounding out the top five were Florida in fourth place and Kansas State in fifth place.

Florida State, No. 1 in both polls since the preseason, had 2.64 points in the standings 1 Playoff pairings The Illinois High School Association pairings for football teams in the state's playoff quarterfinals (in bracket order with seeds, records, dates and times): Class 6A (11) Schaumburg (9-2) at (30) York (8-3), 7 p.m. (7) Lake Park (10-1) at (2) Lincon-Way (11-0), 6:30 p.m. (20) Downers Grove North (9-2) at (28) Glenbard East (8 3), 1 p.m. (1) Naperville Central (11-0) at (24) Elgin Larkin (9-2), 1 p.m.

(AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers made Shawn Green one of baseball's highest-paid players Monday, agreeing to a six-year, $84 million contract to complete a deal that sends Raul Mondesi to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Dodgers acquired Green and minor league second baseman Jorge Nunez from Toronto in exchange for Mondesi and pitcher Pedro Borbon. Almost unnoticed in the wake of the trade and mammoth contract was the naming of Cincinnati reliever Scott Williamson as National League Rookie of the Year. Green's average salary of $14 million per season is the second-highest ever in baseball, trailing only the $15 million earned by his new teammate, pitcher Kevin Brown, in a $105 million, seven- day night, and Los Angeles was given 72 hours by the commissioner's office to work out a contract with Green. Williamson, 12-7 with a 2.41 ERA and 19 saves, received 17 first-place votes, nine seconds and six thirds for 118 points from a panel of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Florida outfielder Preston Wilson was a distant second, getting nine first-place votes, 11 seconds and 10 third for 88 points.

Pittsburgh second baseman Warren Morris finished third, getting six firsts, 10 seconds and nine thirds for 69 points. Williamson, a starter in his first two pro seasons, was impressive in relief during spring games and survived one cut after another. The 23-year-old right-hander throws a fastball in the upper 90s and a nasty split-finger fastball. He quickly impressed manager Jack McKeon and pitching coach Don Gullett. "He was being brought along slowly, but it didn't take him long," McKeon said Monday.

year contract he agreed to with the Dodgers in December. It's the fourth-highest package ever in baseball, trailing only Brown, New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza ($91 million for seven years) and New York Yankees outfielder Bernie Williams ($87.5 million for seven years). Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone said Green is a perfect fit for the team. "The fact that he hits from the left side, and I think most important, his importance and his integrity," Malone said during a news conference at the general managers' meeting. Green is a native of suburban Tustin, some 35 miles from Dodger Stadium.

"It's something to get a chance to play at home in L.A.," Green said at the news conference "Everybody who knows baseball knows what a class organization this is." Mondesi, 28, had asked the Dodgers to trade him last season. "An extra year will provide me with a bit more maturity. I know that I can become a better player by staying another year." The Boilermakers (6-4) are coming off a loss this weekend to Wisconsin. The media billed that game as a contest between two contenders for the Heisman Trophy Brees and Badgers' running back Ron Dayne. "I think next year we have a chance to do a lot of great things with this football team. I still feel that there's a lot of things to do here," said Brees.

Tiller called Brees one of the most productive players he's ever coached. "His return just makes our goals a little more achievable," he said. potential of becoming a favorite in the race for the Heisman Trophy had nothing to do with the announcement. "We just kind of agreed that this was the best way to go. It really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

I'm coming back next year to have fun," said Brees, a native of Austin, Texas. Brees also said he feels he has goals still to achieve at Purdue. As a junior, he has thrown for 3,334 yards and 21 touchdowns through 10 games. The Boilermakers are off this weekend and close their season Nov. 20 on the road against instate rival Indiana.

"It's better for most people, including myself, to stay another WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Purdue quarterback Drew Brees said he is ready to have fun playing football again after announcing he will return to school in 2000 to play his senior season. "I'm relaxed, it's a good feeling," the Heisman Trophy candidate told reporters Monday. "I know this is definitely what was meant to be." The announcement ended months of speculation about Brees' future, including rumors he would opt for the National Football League instead of returning to Purdue next year. Brees said he made the decision after meeting privately with his mother and father and Coach Joe Tiller on Sunday.

OFFENSIVE BEST Detroit wide receiver GERMANE CROWELL caught eight passes for 163 yards and a touchdown against St. Louis in a showdown of NFC division leaders. His biggest catch was a 57-yarder on fourth-and-28 in the closing minutes that moved the Lions into St. Louis territory and set up the game-winning touchdown. DEFENSIVE BESTS Miami cornerback SAM MADISON intercepted three Steve McNair passes to short-circuit the Tennessee offense and pave the way for a 17-0 victory over the Titans in the clash of 6-1 AFC powers.

TRIBUTE There was a moment of silence at all NFL games Sunday for the late WALTER PAY-TON. But the Chicago Bears paid special tribute to their Hall of Fame running back by beating Green Bay for the first time since 1993 to snap a 10-game losing streak against the Packers. GOOD WEEK Seattle halfback RICKY WAITERS had his first two 100-yard rushing games of the season in a span of six days last week against Green Bay and Cincinnati. RELIEF For the second time this season, GUS FREROTTE relieved an injured Charlie Batch and led the Detroit Lions on a game-winning touchdown drive in the final minute. His 12-yard touchdown to Johnnie Morton with 28 seconds left beat St.

Louis on Sunday. He also beat Minnesota in October. WORST FEELING OZZIE NEW-SOME was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Cleveland Browns last summer. He returned to Cleveland last weekend as Baltimore's vice president of personnel and watched the Ravens dismantle the Browns in their first trip back to Cleveland since moving to Maryland in 1996. "This is very satisfying," New-some said.

"But I have a lot of empathy for that other team. Those are the Cleveland Browns." BAD WEEK The PACKERS lost back-to-back games at Lambeau Field in a span of six days to Seattle and Chicago. It's the first time they've lost consecutive home games since their pre-con-tender days in 1991. NEW YORK (AP) Baseball contracts with average annual values of $10 million or more. Figures were obtained by The Associated Press from player and management sources and include all guaranteed income but not income from potential incentive bonuses.

There is no distinction for money deferred without interest: Tim Couch could have returned to Kentucky this fall and been the Heisman Trophy favorite. Instead, he chose to be humbled by the National Football League. Couch endured the worst start of his brief pro career Sunday in his team's biggest game of the season the first visit by the old Browns to Cleveland. Couch completed only nine of 21 passes for 57 yards and was pulled in the fourth quarter of Cleveland's 41-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Couch threw an interception, fumbled twice and was sacked four times on his way to the bench.

He's now 1-7 as a starter and the Browns are 1-8. "You never want to be pulled," Couch said. "I always want to be out there with my teammates. If we're losing, I want to be out there losing with them. If we're winning, I want to be out there winning with them.

I feel like it's my offense and not to be out there is kind of frustrating." Against the Ravens, Couch completed only three of his first 12 passes a slow start that allowed the Ravens to build a 17-3 lead. He wound up completing Club Years Avg.
