now The Mississippi-Memphis State football feud is back to normal Johnny tender teen-agers turned into Tiger-killers Saturday night and dragged Memphis State back down the mountain 21-7 before 50046 at Memorial Stadium The game was played on ordinary grass Mississippi went with many sophomores and Memphis State hinted of having the best team in its history But the Rebels especially Archie Manning and Steve Hindman sprouted chin whiskers on the way up from Oxford and ably defended the banner of the Southeastern Conference This series now stands at 21-1-1 for the Rebs But this was just the warmup for the Memphis State season The real thing happens Saturday in Knoxville when the Tigers get that long-awaited chance to chew on Tennessee That kickoff will be at 2 pm Brine seat belts Memphis State is explosive The Tigers muffed assorted BATON ROUGE La Sept 21 Scrambling quarterback Freddie Haynes led Louisiana State to a 12-12 victory over Cotton Bowl champs Texas Saturday night snapping the win streak at seven games The Tigers scored me touchdown in the fourth period with 7:47 left and coverted the extra point to sew up the victory after scoring their first touchdown in the second referee James Artlev immediately signalled the touchdown Coach Bradshaw called for two-point conversion attempt Wbtgback Joe Jacobs dropped the Forston pass in the end zone but interference was called on Missouri The ball was moved to the 1 Fullback Beard tried a poorer drive off right tackle but he was smeared Missouri still didn't lack for opportunities to tie or win Steve Lundholm recovered fumble at the Kentucky 24 with three minutes to play But on the very next play Jon Staggers best runner was knocked loose from the ball and Phaneuf got it back for Kentucky That was the last good chance for the visitors in a contest that was basically a battle between 'two good defensive lines and two young and inexperienced offensive lines LEXINGTON Saturday's modest 1M conquest of Missouri may go down one of these days as the greatest victory in the career of Coach Charlie Bradshaw And a statement that probably needs plenty of it The Wildcats and their partisans have known no great moments of football conquest since Paul (Bear) Bryant left hastily after the 1953 season Ever since Kentucky has enjoyed fleeting moments of satisfaction under Blanton Collier and Bradshaw But patience is growing thin Bradshaw beginning his seventh year is at the crossroads And victory in this 19tt opener with Missouri was almost a if he was to improve on the dreary 2-9-0 record of 1967 His own best friends held die view that if the Wildcats could not whip Missouri they were not likely to defeat Ole Miss Auburn Oregon State LSU or Georgia the next five foes in that order But if they did whip Mis- CHARLIE souri did Bradshaw think Wre aU that Kentucky might pull an on the Southeastern Conference and rise from bottom to top in one year? our Bradshaw told us Friday afternoon explaining earnestly how he and the staff and these players had tried to prepare for this all-important assignment is the best group of boys ever said Bradshaw all together I've never had a group like this before got boys who want to The mother of one of the boys contrasted 1967 and 1968 she said boys would come over to our house and pal around with our boy When it came time to go to practice they had no enthusiasm for it This year they're eager- often go on over to the practice field an hour early I can see a great difference SO NOW Kentucky has cleared the first big hurdle a victory that provides a certain amount of momentum gives them some confidence and offers hope no matter who the next foe happens to be Bradshaw has one definite plus over 1967 in Stan Forstoo the Lexington boy who was a high school whix in 1965 played freshman ball in 1966 and sat out 1967 with a leg injury He had the first-quarter jitters Then he settled down and passed well and ran the team in an acceptable fashion The offense is limited Forston can call on pass catchers Phil Thompson Vic King of Kingston Joe Jacobs and runners Dicky Lyons Dick Beard Roger Gann and Raynard Makin when the latter gets well But the blockers up front will have to improve in battle KENTUCKY'S defensive line met every challenge of the Tigers quite well And it is obvious that the Wildcats have picked up an exceptional talent in David Roller the Dayton Tenn boy who plays middle guard at 220 Missouri handled Roller only when they massed the ground charge and ran right at him He has good lateral speed and would-be passers are going to get acquainted with this sophomore well acquainted Kentuckians accustomed only to an occasional victory morsel are inclined to get carried away at times and they already are comparing young Roller to Bob Gain the All-American of 1950 We need not go that far yet But he looks like an outstanding sophomore one of the best of the 19a cropi Kentucky's pass defense a headache for all of 1967 still is less than the best Missouri hurt the Wildcats on passes and Missouri makes no claim to be a team that employs the pass very much COACH DAN DEVINE whose Tigers lost to Kentucky at Columbia in 1965 said beat us at our own game Kentucky played good football in the dutch and they hit real hard was disappointed in nur kicking game We had fine field position many times but we capitalise on it Our punting good and it really hurt when we missed three field Devine said he would not blame any nf his team's mistakes on the new formation And he had praise for his two new quarterback Terry Eight Conference for the past decade challenged until the very end but the invaders could not gain inside the Kentucky 20 The crowd was 34000 3000 short of a sellout When the final gun sounded on this sultry afternoon (temperature 85) jubilant spectators poured onto the field and the victory-hungry players hoisted Coach Charlie Bradshaw on sweaty shoulders and carried him out to midfield to meet the crestfallen Missouri coach Dan Devine Kentucky scored in the first and last quarters Missouri struck with great suddenness hi the second quarter mined three field goals from inside the Wildcat 15
