MEMPHIS THURSDAY NOVEMBER 24 1988 THE COMMERCIAL APPEAI A23 TV to seek clues in slaying Missouri case will be aired on NBC show By Thom Gahruklewicz Jonesboro Ark Bureau CARUTHERSVILLE Mo — Authorities in the Missouri Boot-heel are hoping a national television audience can help break a two-year-old slaying case here The Oct 19 1986 slaying of Charles Sigmin of Blytheville Ark will be featured on NBC's Unsolved Mysteries on Wednesday an NBC spokesman said The story took on a witchcraft angle after authorities apparently found what they characterized as a "voodoo doll" either at slaying site or ' in Sigmin's Blytheville home The NBC spokesman said he could not recall where the doll allegedly was found Pemiscot County Pros Atty Mike Hazel said he could neither support nor deny the network’s claim about the doll Other officials in Missouri and Northeast Arkansas declined to comment Sigmin 39 was found slain at the Caruthersville home of his estranged wife Ann Hazel said Sigmin was shot seven times with both a 32- and 25-caliber handgun He also was struck on the head with a steam iron Sigmin worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co in Blytheville as a lineman Warrants have been issued charging Mrs Sigmin and a man investigators describe as her live-in boyfriend Gary Goff with the slaying Hazel said Both were questioned shortly after the slaying but were released for lack of evidence Neither has been seen since the warrants were issued in the spring of 1987 The show was in production for about a week in July in Caruthersville and Blytheville using mostly Memphis actors the spokesman said However Molly Posey an instructor in theater arts at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro Ark portrays Mrs Sigmin in the segment The show mixes re-created scenes with interviews with police officers witnesses and family members and delves into unsolved murders missing person cases and other “unexplained phenomenons" The show has been credited with solving 11 cases out of about 55 it has profiled The program will air at 7 pm on NBC affiliates The Sigmin slaying was re- Base threat minimized at Columbus By James Hull Columbus Min Bureau COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE Miss — A new Air Force program that brings tanker-trans-xrt pilot training to Columbus Air Force Base will serve as insurance against a threat of closing by the Defense Department officials say Congress recently ai $141 million to start the new program Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training (SUPT) at Columbus by 1994 and at two other Air Force Bases bases The program virtually assures that the base will not be among about 40 that may be recommended for closing bya Defense Department panel The panel ierieil to producers by law enforcement personnel while ciews were filming anothei ment in the Mid-South the spokesman said Caruthersville is about 100 miles north of Memphis in the Missouri BootheeL Blytheville is about 70 miles north of Memphis will make its base closing recommendations to Congress next month Rep G V 'Sonny' Monl Miss) whose Third District includes Columbus AFB has said the base was not likely to be a part of the base closings because of its unlimited air space needed for training and Defense officials are not likely to cut back on training Columbus AFB spokesman Tech Sgt Marie Schilter said Monday the base currently trains 359 pilots a year and Air Force officials do not expect that number to change under the new program Student-pilots enter flight training classes every three weeks ana train for 52 weeks before receiving their wings About 1600 commissioned officer and enlisted personnel are stationed at the base Under the SUPT concept student pilots will receive primary training then either fighter or tanker-transport training The tanker-transport training will begin at AFB Texas in 1991 and Vance AFB Okla in 1993 Tanker and transport aircraft include the C141 C5 and KC10 According to figures from the Columbus AFB public affairs office the Air Force Military Airlift Command has about 760 transport planes and Strategic Air Command has about 640 tanker planes and about 60 tanker-transport planes Currently undergraduate pilots at Columbus first master the T37 training jet then advance to the T38 supersonic Talon Jet After T38 graduation pilots are assigned to various types of aircraft based on performance and operational needs Under the SUPT program student pilots will be identified for specific training before entering primary flight training Although primary!
