LET ANYBODY tell you Tennessee won a football game yesterday The score was Tennessee 22 Mississippi State 6 for the record but the officials "won" the game They observed "flag day" at Shields-Watkins Field and in doing so "defeated" both teams and the 26895 cash customers They meant well I'm sure But it was just one of those overzealous jobs of handkerchief-dropping that finally bogged down both teams and made what could have been an entertaining afternoon an almost interminable one in the hot sunshine Referee Chiirky Bowen and his four assoeiates stepped off a total of 21 yards Several other penalties were declined Tennessee once spurned a 15-yard penalty for clipping and a half dozen others were shortened because they were near the goal line AH In all the penalties meted out hit close to 250 Sometimes it was a fast i 1 1 other times a slow whistle and on one occasion there was no nepd for a flag at all Coach Bowden Wyatt on an out-of-bounds play dispatched Tom Husband to relieve Ray Moss as a linebacker The sub cost Tennessee five yards despite the fact that Husband was a perfectly legal substitute The penalties it should be added hastily did nothing to hasten the downfall of the visiting Maroons Nor did they help the visitors Tennessee was a vastly superior team The penalties simply turned a briskly-contested battle into a morass of delays and inaction NEITHER COACH was anxious to put a public blast on the officials "There was some awfully hard hitting out there" observed Coach Wyatt think they figured they'd need to calm things down a hit with penalties Piling on was the major cause of the penalties" Coach Walker was equally cautious in what he said to newspapermen But it's my hunch that this set of officials will get several bad marks when Wyatt and Walker send in reports to the SEC office COACH WYATT was elated as he put it to "get that one behind us You never know what to expect when you've been as keyed up as our gang was last week We did a few things much better and as always we've got a lot to do before we can be ready for Georgia Tech invades Shields-Watkins Field Saturday COACH WYATT spent a busy afternoon handling traffic on tailbacks and when the day was done he was pretty happy about the gradual development of the quartet Bill Majors was addled by a vicious tackle In the UPI TelepHolo UP FOR TECH Georgia Tech quarterback Marvin Tibbetts (15) is up in the air about something snarling over his shoulder ot Clemson defenders as he dives for short gain in Tech's 16-6 victory Thanks Doe That dancing little No 43 wearing a 26895 fans in the 82-degree weaiher Bailes Sophomore tailback Glenn Glass did some sparkling for the Vol fans in a fourth-quarter splurge which almost resulted in another score The drive after moving Schoenrock the punting specialist was rushed into battle and he put one into orbit The ball sailed over the goal Majors missed the snap from center on the first play and lost six Two plays later recovered and the Vols headed goalward Majors got five yards but was dazed when stopped by Willie Daniel Enter Etter The gritty 5-9 demon from Chattanooga put offense in motion two plays later He hit Cotton Letner with a 10-yard strike at the State 25 Etter sent Neyle Sollee into the line next but the Maroons were waiting stopping him cold Etter faded to his left spotted LaSorsa at the 13 and
