Funeral services will be 10 EDITOR'S NOTE Senior citizens in the Decatur area having problems with state government departments or agencies can get answers by calling toll-free 1-800-252-6565. My 76-year-old sister and I live together in a house we own jointly.

I am 67 and receive $81 a month Social Security. She receives $130. Some time ago we were contacted by a Supplemental Security Income "alert" team but have heard nothing since about eligibility for SSI P. S. A You and your sister should apply separately, and not as a household, to the Social Security Administration for SSI.

Eligibility for SSI is affected by such resources as income, back accounts, and stocks and bonds. Initially, the full value of these assets for each household was taken into account in determining who qualified for SSI. In recent months, though, an important change has taken place for single individuals like you and your sister, who share a residence. If you apply individually for SSI, only the assets you own will be counted when determining your eligibility. Hiller of Greenville; Mrs.

Tough CIA Investigation Expected Washington (AP) A tough approach to 3 vestigating the Central Intelligence Agency was signaled Sunday by the man expected to direct the presidential commission probing the agency. And Sen. Robert C.

Byrd, D-W. meanwhile called for a single joint congressional committee to investigate the agency. Some five groups are prepared to look into CIA operations. David Belin, a Des Moines lawyer who is expected to become executive director of the presidential commission, told the Des -Moines Sunday Register he had demanded a "first rate, independent staff" and "will leave no stone unturned until I find the truth." "I've heard people say there is a gray area in this matter. My own feeling is, if there is any doubt, that doubt is resolved against the agency.

"That's a very important concept if we are to maintain our freedoms." Byrd, appearing on ABC's "Issues and Answers" said he feels the alleged violations by the agency in conducting activities within the United States should be investigated. But he expressed a fear that necessary foreign operations of the agency might be compromised by the Sunday Mon. For any senior in a similar situation, this is worth looking into.

What expenses can be claimed when applying for food stamps? My mother thinks she should be able to deduct from her income the costs of her monthly life insurance premiums. E.M. A The basic income limit for food stamp eligibility is $194 a month (individuals) and $273 (couples). However, households with higher incomes still may qualify for food stamps if the expenses in two very basic areas shelter (housing) and medical care are considered excessive. For example, if medical costs over a six-month period average more than $10 a month, they can be subtracted from your total income.

All shelter costs in excess of 30 per cent of monthly income also are deductible. Either of these costs can put a person's income within the upper limits now in effect for food stamps. Your mother, however, won't be allowed to subtract costs of her insurance premiums. How can I determine if I should be receiving medical assistance from the state? I do not receive any other assistance. N.G.

A Your financial resources, along with the costs (or expected costs) of medical care over a six-month period, are the two key factors. Income above $150 a month for eligible individuals ($200 for couples) is considered income available to meet medical expenses. Medical assistance will pay for expenses that exceed this "available" income. Those who receive medical assistance and no other cash public assistance must pay a certain amount of their monthly income into a state collection account. If your medical bills are smaller than the amount you would regularly pay into the collection account, it is to your advantage not to take part in the medical assistance program.
