Republicans ask court for filing delay ROCKFORD (AP) The Illinois Republican Party said Friday it has asked a federal court to suspend the deadline for candidates to file for seats in the state legislature while the party's lawsuits challenging a Democrat-friendly legislative remap proceed. Gregg Durham, a spokesman for state Republican Party Chairman Lee Daniels, who also is the House minority leader, said the length of any delay would be up to U.S. District Court here. The filing period runs from Dec. 10 through Dec.

17. The Illinois State Board of Elections could accommodate a later deadline, so long as it was sometime in January, executive director Ron Michaelson said. Any later and elections officials likely would be unable to process petitions, handle candidates' objections and appeals and print regular and absentee ballots before the March 19 primary, Michaelson said. Such a situation is not new. A court challenge pushed back the filing deadline 10 years ago, the last time the state legislative map was redrawn, Michaelson said.

Democrats were not surprised by the GOP filing, said a spokesman for state Democratic Party Chairman Michael Madigan, who also is the House speaker. "They appear to be fighting the reality that the map prepared by the redistricting committee meets all the tests, and this is just the latest manifestation of that," spokesman Steve Brown said. Legislative districts are redrawn every 10 years to account for population changes. This year, Democrats won control of the process through a special tiebreaker and drew more districts that favor their party. Republicans also are challenging the new map in state courts.

The new map has survived one challenge in the Illinois Supreme Court, but justices have agreed to consider other cases. If the map stands, Democrats will have a strong chance of controlling both the Illinois House and Senate for the next decade. Controlling the legislature would give Democrats the advantage in pushing their policies, passing bills to help Democratic officeholders and launching the careers of new Democratic officials.
