Joe Williams Shoiton Gives Dodgers Poise Ends Durocher Myth Old Gaffers Stir Up Interest in Hal Chase Controversy They Insist He Played Second Base Veteran Does Better Job and Makes It 4 Look Much Easier Her HARRY GRAYSON NEW YORK Burton Edwin Shoiton gave the Dodgers mental poise which is not the least reason why he destroyed the Leo Durocher myth For some strange reason Durocher last fall generally was credited with having taken the Brooks lo a play-off with a vatly-superior club by waving a wand with mirrors or something of that kind Like all schooled baseball men Burt Shotton knew that true When Branch Rickey yanked his long-time right-hand man out of virtual retirement in the spring Old was fully aware of the fact that he was inheriting the choicest of hundreds of handpicked athletes All he had to do was keep them on an even keel With spunky Eddie Stanky running the works on the field Shot-f ton quickly demonstrated to the Superbas that they could be aggressive without being rambunctious A manager or player run off the premises by an umpire is of no value An umpire has yet to lose a decision to a player Shotton first straightened out the pitching staff Every pitcher was a relief work- Public Realizes Club's Strength for First Time he got in 24 games last season he finiahed with only three victories aa against one lass Durocher apparently gave up on the six-foot two-inch 200-pound New York University alumnus did not really come back with him until President Rickey insisted upon it in September Under the steadying influence of the veteran Shotton he developed such confidence that opponents practically concede to his cross-fire Largely because Shotton strung along with him Taylor brought in from St Paul last autumn moved up to give the Brooklyn a real one-two pitching punch a pair of stoppers Taylor attained his greatest stature when he slammed the door in the Red faces at Park the other night shut them out with three hits while whacking in three runs and scoring the fourth The swiftest of the Brooklyn pitchers with curve control and heart to match the Terre Haute Terror actually appears to have too much stuff for his rather slight frame Brooklyn has three other strong-arm men in Gregg Behrman and Barney another rather competent southpaw in Lombardi and a corking relief pitcher in Casey Behind Branca and Taylor Shotton clev- Lads From meet in a doubleheader at Caswell Park Harry Taylor is the swiftest of the Brooklyn pitchers and has a curve to match fluff Shotton riding high Shotton tried to establish four as regular starters He wound up with two corkers in Ralph Branca and Harry Taylor and a reasonable facsimile of one in the lefthanded Joe Hatten case is typical While er under Durocher There were three or four in the bullpen all the while until the staff fell apart like the one-hoss shay Because Lippy Leo had them out of there at the slightest slip the pitchers had the jitters erly spots the others Burt Shotton has done a better job than Leo Durocher made it look much easier and For the first time made the public realize the true strength of the Flatbush party Bums Worried usial Hits Stride NEW YORK AUG THERE MUST BE lively Interest in teen age column or else newspaper wouldn't print them But what I'd like to see is a column for old gaffers 1 hope our editors have a notion that these graying birds automatically cash in their chips at 40 By way of assuring them to the contrary I must return tn that little controversy of whether Hal Chase ever played second base in the big leagues This proved to he an intriguing question for two reasons: (1) Chase is popularly believed to have been the first white child to be bom on lirst base in this country (2) A left handed second base-man has to be one of three things: A rarity an abnormalitty or a monstrosity One of the surprising things about the debate which was launched modestly enough in a Monday column by the president of the New York A Ca was the endless number of people who had seen or claimed they had seen Chase play second base with the old Yankees It developed quite as many people had seen Chase at second base as were destined in later years to see Jim Dandy win that race at 100 to 1 at Saratoga and at a rough guess no fewer than 60000000 were there that dull moist afternoon That Is if all the people who said they were there actually were At any rate I waited until it seemed to me the controversy had been covered from all angles and announced to the' customers that that would be all and thank you so very much indeed But it developed in doing this I had shut out a couple of distinguished addicts who wishes to be heard on the subject so with your kind permission re-open the hearing for just this one more day FIRST LET US HEAR FROM Judge Bennett Champ Clark of the United States Court of Appeals Washington happened to see Chase pipy three games at second base at the beginning of 1913 Frank Chance had become manager of the Yankees and having been a gieat first baseman in his own right with the Chicago Cubs he thought he could do a comeback Having another and even greater first baseman in Chase he undertook to play first himself and sent Chase to second As I remember this arrangement lasted only a few days Chase was one of the most graceful men I ever saw but it was pitiful to see him try to play second He had to field the ball and turn around to throw to first base "I also saw the equally graceful George Sisler try once as a left handed third baseman Fielder Jones who was making stretch drive with the St Louis Browns in 1916 I think it was con eluded he could add to the club's batting strength by playing Babe Borton at first and Sisler at third Sisler appeared very awkward but managed to keep from being maimed lor seven innings when the Browns being ahead Manager Jones put Sisler back 6n first and the regular third baseman on third Of course I saw Jiggs Donahue try to perform as a left handed catcher but the less said about that the better although Jiggs wai later great first biseittin was interested in your digging out this 61d question of left handed COMMENT: MOST OF THE READERS disagree that Chance and Chase ever played first and second at the same time The facts seem to be that Chance had such a plan in mind but an attack of migraine headaches to Which he wis addicted prevented him front going through with it Besides theta IS hd record he ever appeared in a game for the Yankees I heard that Sisler ever played third For this information and an interesting letter my thanks to the Honorable Judge Clark who is obviously real baseball fan Novelist James Farrell (studs lonigan etc) dips his fragile pen in a star-dappled pool of gentle whimsey and writes mentioned that Hal Chase played second base 'for the Yankees You might remark that he also played second base with the Cincinnati Beds I recall having seen him play at second when MOrdecai Brown and Christy Mathewsort pitched their last game against One anothnv I might add too that Chase at all play eoottd Dfluly jS- Comment: chleago-Bortt Farrell whose prbse frightens women and children was clearly a Cub fan in his youth
