Southern California as the Irish galloped to an easy 38 to 7 victory before 104953 spectators the largest football crowd of the year The victory gave Notre Dame its first perfect season since 1930 with nine straight victories climaxed by today's decisive win over the Pacific Coast Conference champion and Western Rose Bowl representative The brilliant generalship of Johnny Lujack Notre All-American quarterback and the slashing runs of Halfbacks Emil Sitko and Bob Livingstone and Fullback John Panelli were an unbeatable combination 92-Yard Jaunt Thrills Livingstone filling in for the injured Terry Brennan uncorked a 92-yard run through the middle of the Southern California line for a touchdown in the fourth period to give the huge crowd in Memorial Coliseum its greatest moment of a thrill-packed afternoon But that run was almost matched by 76-yard run on the first scrimmage play of then booted a field goal from the 13 to give the Irish three points in the first four minutes of play The Irish began a long sustained drive from their 12 and marched 88 yards in 16 plays to score Again it was Livingstone Panelli and Sitko alternating It was Sitkn who drove over for the touchdown from the one-yard line after the Trojans had stopped the Irish for twn plays Trojans Come to Life Southern California impotent for the first 25 minutes of the game came to life late in the second to a 6 to 6 tie before a crowd of 67-000 The largest crowd ever to witness a regularly scheduled football game in the South watched the fabulous A Tittle toss an LSU touchdown pass as the clock ran out at the end of the second period and try desperately to do it again in the fading seconds of the game But a carefully schooled Tulane secondary bottled up receivers The great LSU back who was playing his last college game was injured in the last minute and gave way to Charlie Pevey and the plucky little understudy connect Tittle Hits Mark Tittle had trouble finding his ends early in the game but in the remaining minutes of the first half he completed six out of eight and rifled a touchdown pass to End Ray Bullock in the end zone as the clock hit the zero mark Holly Heard missed the extra point Tulane who was given the same kind of chance to beat LSU as Jersey Joe Walcott enjoyed when he climbed into the ring with Joe Louis last night fought back bitterly Benny Ellender who handled the ball in the Tulane formation and big Cliff Van Meter led a 65-yard downfield drive that ended when Fullback Dick Hoot of Swarthmore Pa crashed through the rugged LSU line for a touchdown from the six-yard line Ed Heider failed to kick the point Tittle came back with his famous passing attack in the fourth period and put LSU in scoring position with two tosses which took the ball to 14-yard line Harrell Collins drove to the eight but fumbled on the next play and Bill Svoboda recovered for Tulane Slim Jim Cason who was also playing his last game for LSU ran Leonard punt back to the Tulane 29-yard line and when Tittle completed a pass to Ray Bullock on the Tulane 10 it looked like LSU would score Ends TD Threat But after Bill Schroll barged to the Tulane one-yard line the Greenies held and took the ball on downs Tittle again took to the air after LSU had taken the ball on the Tulane 20 on a bad kick But Homer Bedeaux who ended a Florida touchdown attempt here to weeks that he and a of his teammates have given Coach Allyn McKeen a vote of confidence despite a student petition now being circulated which asks for removal of McKeen and Athletic Director Noble Seal a tackle said Coach McKeen called the players together earlier this w-eek and told them: heard a petition is making the rounds want you fellows to know that if you want to get rid of me you have to go to all that trouble Just say the word and move out McKeen Does Job my impression however that this petition is the work of students outside the football squad I think those stu- i dents are significant insofar as my job goes My job is to do right by you men and put out a football team and what i tried to Seal said McKeen then strode from the meeting room without a further word and that the players voluntarily decided to poll themselves on the matter Of 48 who voted a very small number expressed dislike of Seal said Fred Bailey editor of the student paper said a petition signed by every man on the football will be frontpaged in the publication next week stating in part: To Print Petition the undersigned Mississippi state football players take this means to express wholehearted endorsement of Allyn McKeen head football coach and favor retention of him as such McKeen has been at his present post for nine years turning out a series of winning elevens in that time This year the Maroons won seven and lost three One of those losses was to their traditional rival Ole Miss Jack Crawford a senior in the school of business appraised the a score And hard drives tore gaping holes in the Southern California line Leaves USC Fans Dazed The game was close during the first half with Notre Dame holding only a 10 to 7 lead at time but the Irish speed and ability evidenced itself in the second half when they ran up 28 points while holding the Tro-i jans scoreless The victory left Southern California supporters awe-stricken and painfully thinking ahead to the Rose Bowl game when their team must meet Michigan rated almost as good as Notre Dame Southern California put itself in the hole on the first running play of the game when Verl Lillywhite fumbled and Notre Dame recovered on the USC 33 With the home team bewildered by the unexpected bad break Sitko Livingstone and Panelli alternated to advance to the seven but there Southern California stiffened Kicking specialist Fred Earley The Trojans drove 44 yards in 10 plays for the score The second half opened disastrously for Southern California On the first play after the kick- off Sitko broke over right end and raced 76 yards to score with the great Connor applying the key block on Gray to give the red-haired ball carrier clear sailing for the last 30 yards Five minutes later the Irish had another score after Lujack started the drive by intercepting pass on his 13 and run-j ning it back 34 yards Eight plays later Panelli plunged the last I five yards to score But it was 1 Sitko who carried the mail most i of the way great run of 92 yards came midway in the fourth period and not a man was near i him as he crossed the goal at I an easy lope The final Irish score came In the last 30 seconds of the game when tackle Alfred Zmijewski intercepted a lateral pass and ran 35 yards for a touchdown anti-McKeen petition thus: leaders of the Mississippi State student body under coercion of a small alumni group are working for dismissal I neither like nor dislike McKeen but even should he be removed I think this would be the fair and decent way to do Another student who declined to be quoted said that the petition had been signed by some 1500 persons He said the ouster petition is addressed to the board of trustees of state institutions of higher learning and charges that McKeen failed to utilize the football team for the interests of the school also we feel that a personal and inspiring coach is demanded i it will also be noted that the services of more capable coaches are available at this time Mississippi State President Fred Mitchell said he had heard of the petition way of the but that he knew nothing of its details Neither McKeen nor Noble were available for comment D-T rojan Summary MIAMI FLA DEC PRESIDENT Charley Hurt of the Southern Association like various league directors voiced his opinion that Knoxville will never get back into the Southern Association until the city has a modern park and lighting system He offered a logical suggestion that would help restore Knoxville in the class of baseball it deserves when the opportunity affords itself time may soon come when there is a Southern Association franchise he said seems to me that if the City build a new park all at once that the wise thing would be to erect the bleachers first and then build the new grandstand later Plans for the bleachers could be drawn up by a competent baseball architect to fit into the new grandstand when they are ready to build NOW THAT LEO (THE LIP) DUROCHER is back in the saddle as manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers one of the biggest baseball deals of the year likely will pop when the major league moguls gather at their meeting in New York next week It is pretty well authenticated that Brooklyn has swapped Outfielder Dixie Walker the and Pitchers Vic Lombardi and Hal Gregg to Manager Bill Pittsburgh Pirates for Bill Cox and a young prospect named Bemie Mack and a bale of cash It was reported here that Branch Rickey was waiting until he had named his manager before revealing the consummation presumably because he wants the Dodger partisans to think the manager had a hand in the deal BUSINESS MANAGER BILL KEEP reveals that only six members of the 1947 Knoxville squad now remain on the Smoky roster and four of these are expected to go before the start of spring practice The remaining six are Johnny Rocek and Rufus Jackson catchers Dopey Frey and Jeff Oliver infielders and Sovem Wright and Lacey James pitchers Frey and Wright are considered prospects by the Giant United Press ATLANTA Ga Dec 6 Athletic Director William A Alexander of Georgia Tech suggested tonight that the National Collegiate Athletic Asso might move in on the bowl situation before another season and limit participation by member teams to a few 1 per cent of the gate receipts to each team and manages a fair ticket Alexander said Cotton Bowl at Dallas gives each team 42 1-2 per cent of the gate and ample tickets Those plants are paid for It is reasonable to allow stadiums still under mortgage to hold out gate receipts to pay for their plant and give each team say 33 or 35 per cent of the gate Bond Buyers Grab Seats Is in the distribution of tickets that the colleges take a beating from the other bowl games By late summer business men who bought stadium bonds grab all the best seats No public sale is offered A few thousand seats are reserved for the teams now the students friends and alumni of Georgia Tech Alabama and all the other colleges appearing in the big bowl games are clamoring for seats and the demand cannot be met In our own case the Orange Bowl not only was sold out long ago but new construction is not completed They strained a point to send us 4500 tickets Alabama (going to the Sugar Bowl) and Georgia (in the Jacksonville Bowl) may be worse off than we are Tennessee made of its big following last year by trying to meet the demand (for Orange Bowl seats) with less than 4000 tickets Georgia and North Carolina had a headache with Sugar Bowl tickets last year long before the game was approved bowls Alexander a man very close to the controlling powers of collegiate football and longtime member of the National Rules Committee based his argument the increasing complaint colleges which are invited to bowls only to find all the tickets sold committees are conducting their games with little consideration for the competing Alexander told Sports Editor Ed Danforth of the Atlanta Journal in the matter of tickets Big businessmen in the Bowl cities buy up all the choice seats You Gotta Know Joe you know Joe or Morris you cannot get a seat The teams that make the game possible are allowed a fraction of what they might expect Never are there enough for their students and faculty not considering alumni and friends" is just possible that the NCAA will extend its investigations into bowl games and inspect the method of distribution of gate receipts and Alexander added NCAA might then compile a list of eertified bowl games and refuse its members Score by periods: TULANE LSU Touchdowns: Bullock Hoot Substitutes: LSU Ends Bullock Lof-lin McLeod Adams
