TIT v't -fP 9 fV tP p'-? 9 9 9 d'-w''' if THE SUNDAY COURIER AND EVANSVILLE INDIANA AUGUST 13 1978 From humble beginnings The champions 1 By PETE SWANSON Sunday staff writer He is the last of 19 children born to Ralph and Jane Sloan a farm family that had limited time tor games in the struggle to survive He loet his father at age 4 These roots the bard facts of humble life In his infancy probably explain the drive that propelled Jerry Sloan to the top of his profession in II years of National Basketball Association play Haile made me understand the Importance of doing things right I didqt always agree with his Ideas his philosophy but I look back on those days as peat experience I appreciate Coach Haile's discipline when I got out of line a couple time Arad McCutchan I don't think I could ever put into words what Coach McCutchan did for me He cared formers person not Just a basketball player used to be scared to be around peoplp But he made me comfortable around even if it eras Just going out for He had a way of saying and doing thp right thing "Whenever we bad a banquet Coach asked each of us to introduce the person something positive about a game or a practice- "Just the opportunity to play basketball That was it Basketball is more than games Practice is a part of it Every practice every game provided enothcr opportunity to do what Ironically fee sport he lee feed made him one of the nation's fiercest competitors in the game he loves "Running track wasn't very pleasant It fen for a long time" he reflects on the springs of his high school years In McLemborai Dl "When Coach Gene Haile said we bad to run track to play basketball I couldn't seethe sense in especially since I couldn't help the track team Ob I ran in meets once or twice but mostly I Just tan around the track I was so slow it's hard to see how I could have played basketball looking back I see how track got me ready to compete It built mv endurance my stamina I wasn't as quick or fast as most gins I played against but I could piay on and on without slowing down That comes from all that running "By Itself running track wont put you in basketball shape But running four miles toughens both your body and mind can fed a little tired in a basketball game But you figure that if you've been able to run four miles you should be able to play hard another five He credits his basketball teachers this msn whose grade school education came in a one-room schoolhouse The fear of failure was definitely there and still is" says the M-year-old Sloan who emerged from the dust of Gobbler's Knob in Southern Illinois to become the greatest player in University of Evansville history And now a Sunday Courier and Press Tri-State Hall of Earner "I was never afraid to play basketball because I know how to I've always been afral goes back a aware of it In high scl it better as I got older "The more accomplishments you have the more you fear failure So you compete harder" The Sloan psyche did net allow the fear of failure to cause depression time I played a game the thought occurred that I wouldn't play as well as I wanted And in my own mind there were times when I failed a little Mt I could always look bsck and find No 1 Newburgh seniors Healy Matt McDowell Ron Hooper Middle row: Jay Burch Bob Burke Dale Nance Dirk Healy Back row: Assistant Coach Ron Biggs Keith Atkins Steve Biggs Paul Quinzer Coach Jim Burch The Huber Realty team posted a 22-2 record in winning its second straight Newburgh Senior League championship and in bringing its two-year mark to 6 1-6 Front row (left to right): Mike McDowell Joe Titzer Brett City Tourney i Tops in Babe Ruth League Koester Contracting's team finished its season with an 1 1-4 record good for a cochampionship in Evansville's Babe Ruth League Front row (left to right): Mike Smith David Clark Tim Lander Roger Taber Jerry Dimmett Mark Hessler Jim Terry and Bob Schuler Second row: Coach Dave Bender Brad Ballard Alan Lander Mark Crane Brad Barker Alan Clark Kerry Mattingly Warren Shelton Coach Mike Satterfield Coach Chris May absent next to him That may not seem like much leg but you get confidence from being able stand up in public and talk about teammate" McCatchan's "great cemmou as his greatest player calls tt led to the Sloan era at the University of Evansville an era that brought 76 wins and 9 losses Jn three years including NCAA Division JJ championships In 1964 and the 29-6 season of "I bad left Illinois after six or eight-weeks homesickness as much as anything else I was working in the oil fields around McLeansboro but work was getting slots and I was wondering what to da "I had visited Murray State They were recruiting David Lee my friend and high school teammate after that my mother asked 'Why don't you get Interested in That got me to thinking so I called Coach McCutchan He had been over before I went to Illinois used to come over with people like Dave Fulkerson Walt Henry and Marv Pruett" Loyalty and bis value of friendship helped 81oan decide to postpone his pro afted basketball debut when Baltimore drafi him In 1964 after bis Junior season The fact Ms original Illinois class was graduating made Mm eliglMe for the NBA draft "It was a shock to be drafted I had no idea didn't even think about it till It happened" Post-graduate ties with an Evansville teammate may have saved an NBA career that he feared would end after a rookie season in Baltimore I stayed with the Bullet I think I'd have been cut before my second year I think Td have been cut the first year except I had a no-cut contract The coach Paul Seymour wasn't that interested in me i summer before my first training camp with the Bull I figured Chicago wak my last chance The NBA bad just 10 teams then Jobs were scarce Humes and I played one-on-ooe every day that summer 30 minutes a day' Thirty minutes may not seem like a long time but we played hard Just like it was a game worked on my shooting on my offense Those one-on-one games with Larry helped so Johaay Kerr Ms Baltimore roommate who became the Bulls' first coach though staying just two year me the opportunity to play He put me out there and said relax the Job waa mine "Johnny felt I was like a spring in a dock that If he got me unwound I could play" Dick Mott his coach eight years in Chicago "realty knew me I'd tell Dick I needed to play a little more in a practice or an exhibition to get ready And say: i me worry about that I know you better than you da' He cared about me and I played bard for Even Seymour Siena's coach in the sea: son that brought doubt is not regarded harshly He wu from the old school He expected you to learn a lot on your own from other player but not to ask 'em anything When the NBA bad only 10 team guys wero afraid of losing their Job So I didn't feet could watch and analyse see what I needed to do to play In the So the Chicago longtime captain most popular player In the franchise's 12-year history only basketball or hockey player whose Jersey has been retired and is on display In Chicago Stadium went to his new home with this determination It looked like my last chance I was going to give It my best shot If I didn't make it I want it to be because I hadn't worked hard enough" reliefer is how he got that curve just practiced throwing curve and I guess it helps that I have a supple wrist I've always had a pretty good curve "Probably working with hand grippers in the off-season has helped my wrist I exercise with 'em around the house while I'm watching television" Like Glyaa aad ex-Triplets righlhaadcr Mark Lemongello of Houston Burnside wu signed by Detroit a free agent was lneli-I outside the United Toronto suburb y- The Women's City Tournament We waited all summer for it 'and suddenly it's over It was a well-organized well-run tournament as usual thanks to the bard work of Courier Sports Editor Bill Fluty Ms wife Bridget and many women Even the weather man cooperated to bring us three days of sunbeam All who worked on the tournament deserve a Mg hand for all their time and effort Fluty commented at the awards ceremonies Wednesday evening that he liked the women's tournament because all he had to do was to tell the women volunteers what needed to be and they did it Evansville's women golfers are pateful the city tourney has been reinstated after such a long absence (The tournament waa once sponsored by The Evansville Pres but was dropped several years ago The Evansville Cornier began sponsoring the annual event In 1976) "I fed fortunate that they're having the tournament" said this year's runner-up Mary Pat Boarman "There was a long time in this city when there wasn't snything for women's golf I would like to thank all the people for their hard work and thank them for having the Boarman 30 who works as a lab assistant at the Mead Johnson research center in ML Vernon Ind agreed with however that she would prefer that the tournament be held on a weekend my case I wouldn't have to take days off from work as part of my vacatlo then I've also beard some of the men it work say It would be nice to have the tournament on a weekend because It would draw a larger gallery" fee said (We understand however that scheduling a tournament on a weekend at a city course hurts the course's revenue as well as preventing other golfers from playing) Boarman said she thought It was good to have a nine-hole division in the tournamenL have a Mead Johnson league and i some of the women In our league played in the nine-hole division this year for the first time They bad a good time and a couple of them (Shelley Duggan and Virginia Bright-man) even walked off with a couple of' She agreed with me that she would prefer to have a leader board or two gn the course however rather than playing "In the think I would like to know how I she said Boarman and I also said we would like to play more perhaps a three-day Living the i clean to stay tournament or even a four-day tournament like the men's city tourney would prefer a three or four-day tournament to a two-day on but that might not be convenient for the majority of the women" she said She also suggested if dlda't present any problems for those who make the pairing that players would move faster if paired in threesome "I always enjoy playing in a threesome rather than a foursome but if that work out I Our 1978 champion Sally Becker who also captured the title In 1976 said she agreed that threesomes would speed up play She also noted that there were no starter's time "It really helps not having to wait on every hole If you have a lost ball or need a ruling the starter's times give you some built-in allowance for that" Becker also said that it was is little uncomfortable getting started the first day because golfers were not called to the tee as on Wednesday Another problem she died was the lack Of an official for the first round to me is a fairly glaring she said She ahe wondered If perhaps instead of having a late luncheon at the tournament's conclusion if it might not be and save if small sandwiches or snacks were available during the day way the women who teed off early wouldn't have to wait so long for lunch" Becker said Bill Fluty was not available for comment nor were some of the women who worked on the tournament: Bridget Fluty Jo Ann Murphy Pudgy Martin and Carolyn Cummins to name a few These suggestions are only minor details we thought would make an already good tournament even better Becker summed up our feeling like the tournament and would like to emphasise that anything I suggest is only constructive criticism I think by and large the tournament is She added "With The Courier being such an established institution that kind of insures the future of the life9 'Td pitch one night then go out till I am I could go out the Mght after that and the night after that lie couple nights before I pitched again I'd try to get my rest "But a relief pitcher doesn't hnow when hell get Into the game He might pitch every night for a while Bo it's important to got to consistently get your rest You watch your Burnside the bullpeuner is at 9 each morning I've got to eat two meals during the day have mystrength when I go to the park a starter I used toaleep until noon" Roommate Gary Graftal a career reliever me make the adjustment Ganr and I talked about what it takes to do well in the bullpen how you prepare yourself how to warm up wanned up minutes as a starter but in the pen you try to throw 10-12 quick pUcbe Not so qulcklylhat you rush yourself out of rhythm because you've got to get your rhythm ta thoee 10-12 pUche you don't get your rhythm the you probably wont But you reulty don't know until you get Into the game what kind of stuff you've Burnside's stuff ladude eurveball considered the best on Evansville's mound staff Hd is especially tough on iefthaoded "Just fooling around on the Canadian Share Babe Ruth crown bachelor admitted Ms disappointment upon learning July 19 he would move to the bullpsn following Detroit's recall of fellow southpaw Eddie Glynn "I was kind of he admitted been a starter all my career except part of my first year In rookie league The pen was kind of new "Then I pitched a couple good outings and said to myself 'Heyl This be easy but maybe I can lean to like Since then Burnside has
