The rest of the numbers are ratings and shares (percentage of homes where the TV is on and to that program). In other programs, WCIA's "Regis and Kathie Lee" (5 rating27 share) edged out WAND's "Rosie 0'Donnell Show," (421) at 9 a.m., before the latter moved to 3 p.m. In November's 3 p.m. race, the lame-duck "Day and Date" (7 rating30 share) beat out WAND's "Dr. Quinn" (211) and WICS' "Ricki Lake" (312).

At 4 p.m., Oprah Winfrey on WCIA (1236) continued to overpower WAND's "Extra" "Jeopardy" combo (4.513) and WICS' "Home Improvement" and "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" (3.5 11). WAND's "Wheel of Fortune" continues to roll at 6:30 p.m., with a 15 rating21 share. WICS' "Seinfeld" (1221) reruns run a close second, followed by WCIA's "Entertainment Tonight." (916). And in late night, WCIA's run of CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" continues strong (827), followed by NBC's "Tonight Show" on WICS (620) and PI The first ratings for the 1996-97 season are in, and most of them resemble last season's numbers.

The November sweeps, taken from Oct. 31 to Nov. 27, are when local stations use ratings to set their ad rates. All are household ratings. First, the news ratings.

As we established last year, we're using two numbers: One for Macon, Christian, DeWitt, Logan, Moultrie, Piatt and Shelby counties; the other for the entire Spring-field-Decatur-Champaign market. Ratings are the percentage of all homes tuned to a certain program at a certain time. In the 6 a.m. news race, WAND's (ABC, Decatur) "Good Morning, Central Illinois" had an 8.1 rating for the seven-county region, followed by WICS' (NBC, Springfield) morning news with a 2.4 and WCIA (CBS, Champaign) with a 1.5. For the entire market, the order is reversed: WCIA with a 4.7, WICS with a 3.5 and WAND with a 3.1 (The WICS ratings also include sister station WICD in Champaign, which simulcasts the Springfield station's morning newscast and has its own news the rest of the day.

For simplicity's sake, the two stations are noted as WICS.) In midday news, WAND chalked up a 7.4 in the region for its 11:30 a.m. news, trailing WCIA's noon WAND's "Nightline" and the first half-hour of "Jenny Jones" (26). SCHEDULE SWITCHES: Some major changes take effect Monday with the weekday schedule for WRSP (Fox, Springfield), with Trekkers dancing in delight. The changes lead off with the addition of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" reruns at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays.

Reruns of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" move to 6 p.m. "We get requests for both of those all the time," WRSP general manager Tom MacArthur said of the "DS9" reruns and the "TNG" earlier time. "Anything that has to do with 'Star Trek' or sci-fi does very well in this market, and we feel we've got a whole new audience at 6." Repeats of "The Simpsons" move to 5 p.m., followed by a new series, "Real TV." It's a reality show that draws much of its content from home video shots of action. "Mad About You" reruns move to 10 p.m. from the current 6:30.

"We're up against a very strong program in MacArthur said. "News is very strong in this market, and it's hard to compete with that." Also in late-night, "Martin" and "Cops" reruns switch spots, to 11:30 and 11 p.m., as of Monday. Brettwood Village 876-8306 3 news with a 9.0 and ahead of WICS' nooner with a 2.1. In the market, WCIA notches a 10.5, followed by WICS' 4.0 and WAND's 3.8. At 5 p.m., WAND's "Live at Five" is watched by 15.7 percent of the seven-county area, followed by WCIA's "Newscope" with a 10.9.
