Hicknry whs given the ball on another left end assault The Durham dasher seemed headed for the goal line hut finally was forced out of bounds by Duncan on Tennessee's 20 After the Blue Devils had iwen set back to the 25 by a penality Tipton passed down the middle to Hudgins who made a spectacular catch for a 15-yard gain and a first down on the 10 On the next play O'Mara smashed through for four yards hut he was smacked so hard that he spilled the ball and Hendricks hawked it on the six to avert what seemed to be a certain touchdown march The Vols got another break after Wood had punted out of bounds on Tennessee's 45 Hackney fumbled on the first play and Leffler recovered for Tennesse Aftr an exchange of punts Tennessee took the ball and led by Wood who broke off tackle and spurted 21 yards before he was brought down deep in Duke territory Howevery the march was throttled and the first quarter ended with Duke in possession of the ball on about their own 19 The remainder or the second period was nip and tuck with neither team threatening to score It was late in the third period before the Vols threatened again Tipton's punt was grounded on Duke's 48 Wood got loose lor 14 yards before he was stopped on Duke's 35 The Blue Devil defense stiffened and Wood dropped back tor a short kick In attempting to boot one out near the goal line Babe's foot slipped off the ball and it went out of bounds for a two-yard loss and the ball went to Duke on their 32 O'Mara then broke off tackle and got loose for a 22-yard gain but the Vols tightened down and forced Duke to kick Early in the fourth period Harp kicked 29 yards out of bounds on downs registering 10 against Bfor the Blue Devils Duke however held a decided edge in kicking Tiptrn and Hackney punted IS times for an average of 44 yards per punt while Wood Harp and Cafego averaged only 33B per kick for 18 punts The Vols got down to work early In the first period and started nut as if they meant to lose no time in taking a lead over the Blue Devils Soon after the opening kickoff Tipton punted to Wood on Tennessee's 35-yard line but just as the Vol back caught the ball he was battered to the ground by several Blue Devils Duke was penalized 15 yards to the 50 for piling on and the Vols went into action Wood started the fire works by fighting Ihrough for four yards and then he gave the Vol supporters something to cheer about when he raced across the field and hurled a pass to Duncan that netted 22 yards and a first down on Duke's 22 The Vols then hammered the line to the 19 but penalties set them back to the 29 It was third down and 15 to go when Wood sped his perfect pass over Tipton's head to Duncan for the touchdown that didn't count He then followed up with his punt that gave Duke the ball on their own 2 The Blue Devils refused to be alarmed over the situation Tipton dropped back apparently to kick the bail nut but instead of kicking he pulled one of Bobby Dodd's old tricks and shot a pass to Hackney who rambled down the sideline for 17 yards before Perkins tarkled him This trick play apparently inspired the Blue Devils for they opened up with a powerhouse attack that all but swept the Vols off the field After Hackney had picked up three yards through the line Tipton running behind a wave of Blue interference roared around left end and down the field for 22 yards On the next play he rambled around right end rTprcuJT lIJooO A firestone AUTO HEATER MTP II IE COHFOITABLE ALL Wlim Kick Bools Ohio State Out of Race Stanley Converts After Last Minute Touchdown To Edge Buckeyes
