It With You" an amiable little edy about a family of eccentrics that just wants to be happy and really doesn't bother anyone was revived last night for television on CBS One might say television lifted it directly from the stage and with briskly paced comedy recalled the George Kaufman-Uoss Hart Pulitzer Prize winner of 1936 Often called the father of TV situation comedy Cant Take It With more resembles sketch or skit theater than a real play but it is not without its little messages The rigid formula does resemble TV but when Kaufman and Hart wrote it back in the midst of the Depression it was wonderful wacky theater A family of lovable eccentrics headed by Grandpa Vanderhof (Art Carney) goes through life doing what it wants to satisfying its needs for happiness and well-being and paying absolutely no attention to convention When the one conventional member of the family granddaugher Alice (Blythe Danner) brings home her fiance's stuffy rich Wall Street parents for dinner the conflict arises and the denouement isn't far off although some line comedic touches occur first And that is the thrust of the play It is an amiable entertainment perhaps a touch ahead of its time in 1936 that elicits gentle although genuine laughter rather than guffaws Daughter Penny (Jean Stapleton) took up playwriting one day when a typewriter was delivered to the house by mistake Her husband Paul (Eugene Roche) plays with toys like a child and manufactures fireworks Second daughter Essie (Beth Howland) studies ballet daily with the typical off-the-wall Russian (Kenneth Mars) while her husband (Paul Sand) plays the xlyophone and prints radical messages which mean nothing to him be just likes to print Add the milkman (Henry Morgan) who dropped in one day and decided to stay a drunken actress (Joyce Van Patten) and two Hack servants who are to Penny like Porgy and and you have the wacko household Outsiders of course are stunned but the Vanderhof bunch just merrily rolls along Grandfather dropped out of the job market 35 years earlier and his back income taxes keep piling up (he wants to know what he will get for his money if he pays the taxes) so you can imagine the social graces being pressured when the stuffed shirts arrive Watching Cant Take It With was a nice way to spend two hours weathers the strains and in the South of the 1930s for experienced actors but Ford long-term contracts with NBC the network said Wednesday A spokesman said the couple's contracts announced in 1977 ended last Friday and were not renewed He declined to provide a reason
