POULTRY NEWS i.CO CIVIC AND ARTISTIC $18,844 Value On Nelson Eddy W-UK HENS Rilhv aicks UFE mmYED MAGA2WE Kinspel Estate Appears Today DECLARED THE BEST Poultrvmen should realize that those pullets which start laying early and show a fairly high rate of egg production during the first three months of the laving year are apt to prove the best layers and to be most profitable, according to Ross Crane, assistant farm advisor representing the University of California Agricultural Extension service in Orange county. Crane states that such early maturity in pullets is probably largely inherited. Because of practical poultrymen who wish to save pullets for a breeding flock I should separate these early ma-; turing birds from the rest of the flock and use them for breeding during the following year. Bv Themselves Later maturing birds that have good physical development should be placed in pens by themselves. They can then be forced along by use of more stimulating feeds and perhaps by use of electric lights.

The rest of the flock will then be made up of culls and late maturing birds which should be sold immediately. Experience has shown that they will never become profitable commercial birds. Science Proud Of Gizzardless Hen BY ELEANOR YOUNG ELLIOTT Always of interest in this community where its editor and publisher, Ada King Wallis, was a former newspaperwoman the a Los Angeles-published has met with more than customary attention for its current issue just off the press. For this issue is given over entirely to Orange county women and their achievements and interests, with pictures and articles of widely varied import. In her foreword, she writes: The late Lawrence K.

This year the flock owners are paying more attention to the supply of chicks and are looking into the flocks that supply the chicks to their own flock. It pays to know your chicks' parents and the many ranch owners are wanting good breeding behind the chicks. The chicks that will spell profits for their owners are from good stock with known egg records. None but the best at the lowest price is a good motto to follow.

The above chicks are close to the electric hoover which supplies the warmth the first few days when a life is so important to the rancher. Have you heard the story of the hen whose gizzard was removed for the sake of science? She attracted thousands at the Poultry Congress in Cleveland. A skillful surgeon put "Lady Lime to sleep and took out her gizzard without her knowing it. She was then fed a balanced mash ration containing "Lime Maniodized Calcite (Calcite Flour, Potassium Iodide, and Manganese Sulphate). The experiment proved that if birds are fed a balanced ground ration, with all the minerals they require, they will be perfectly healthy and produce a gizzard.

It shows, furthermore, that the average hen with a gizzard eats gravel and grit as much (if not more) for the mineral elements as for the grinding. In ordinary practice, at present, the usual method is to feed a limestone or calcite grit which is relatively easily dissolved by the acids of digestion; or to use oyster shell and a high-mineral grit in addition to the minerals in the mash.
