LOUIS, Sept 21. UP) Tha pennant hungry St. Louis Cardinals won an Important game from tha Philadelphia Phillies 7 5 Tuesday, but it may prove to be a costly one in their stretch battle with the tenacious Brooklyn Dodgers.

Stan Musial, the most important member of their cast, hammered a single and triple for the Card cause, but in running out his three base hit in the fifth inning, the mighty mauler pulled a muscle in his left leg, and was forced to leave the game. A club spokesman announced the injury was not serious, and "Musial is expected to play against the Dodgers Wednesday." However, the club trainer immediately went to work and applied a cold com press on the injured leg. Brooklyn Rookie Wins Til CHICAGO, Sept. 21. iP Jack Banta, a lean righthander from Kansas, won the most important game of his brief career Tuesday as he pitched the Brooklyn Dodgers to a 5 0 triumph over Johnny Schmitz and the Chicago Cubs. The victory kept the Dodgers, who invade the lair of the leading St. Louis Cardinals for the opener of a three game series Wednesday, only a game and a half back of the Red Birds.

Banta's side arm fastball and sinker had the Cubs in complete subjection. The lanky youth granted only five hits, fanned five and walked none in besting Schmitz who had scored four of the Chicago's five triumphs over the Dodgers this year. Banta and Schmitz were locked in a scoreless duel until two were out in the Dodger sixth. Then the Dodgers poured three runs home to wrap up the decision. Eddie Miksis singled to start the rally.

Carl Furillo's looping fly ball dropped safely in right field for another single. Schmitz, apparently ruffled, walked Jackie Robinson and Bill Hodges to force Miksis home with the first run of the game. Luis Olmo followed with a single to left, for two runs and it was all over but the shouting. We understand that this city once competed extensively with teams from other towns in East Idaho and many players hope to revive this spirit. Unfortunately, little progress has been made toward getting younger folks Interested in the sport. A clinic for girls, conducted by Babe Garvin of Pocatello early in the summer, start ed a few youngsters toward the sport and it is hoped that more clinics will be Included in 1950 plans of the tennis association. We believe several tournaments for juniors should be included in forthcoming plans by the association and junior chamber. Both organizations worked throughout the summer sponsoring several men's and women's tournaments with a high degree of success.

The current Eastern Idaho men's doubles tournament will wind up organized tennis action here this summer. Several tennis players have told this writer that they would like to see some of the proposed new courts located at Municipal golf course. They reason that this is a logical place for the courts inasmuch as the golf course is a center of sporting activity in the city. Addition of tennis courts there would be advantageous to ail, the players believe. In addition, tennis players would have access to showers and lock ers at the clubhouse.

A check of tennis players in the city shows that Idaho Falls boasts some the the finest talent in the state. Here's a partial list of some of the city's outstanding players: Ira Todd, Eastern Idaho's men's singles champion. Todd is the No. 8 man on the Brigham Young university team. BYU last year won the western half of the Skyline Six tennis season.

Tftbb George, a former star at Virginia university. George was once prep school singles champion of the city of New Orleans and he and his brother held the Mew Orleans boys' doubles crown. George also starred in football at Virginia U. Glen Hankins, a former member of the Oakland Athletic club. Other members of that Oakland club at the time Hankins played on the coast included the famous Helen Willi Moody, five times the U.S.

amateur women's singles champion, and Helen Jacobs, four times a U. 9. amateur champion, in addition to several stars in the men's ranks. Dr. Dauchy Migel, a former member of the Harvard university team.

Idaho crushed a weak Willamette univerpitfr team 79 to 0 last Saturday, but showed a lack of polish on both ends of the passing game By Jo Shoquist tost Keglster Sport Editor Tennis fans who failed to watch Home matches in the recent Eastern Idaho mens singles tourney here, missed a couple of performances that would be hard to equal anywhere. The semifinal round tiff between Ira Todd, the tourney champion, and Tabb George, third seeded player in the meet, was as fine a net match as most tennis fans have seen here in a long time. Todd, a brilliant man on the baselines and behind the net, was pushed by George harder than at any other time in the tourney and he rallied with a spectacular performance that kept a fair sized crowd of onlookers fairly amazed. His backhand cross court shot was clicking well and the net play of both Todd and George was the niftiest In the tournament, By next summer, Idaho Falls may well be a tennis hotbed, thanks to the Idaho Falls Tennis association, the junior chamber of commerce and the city. Many persons have also devoted much of their time toward building interest in the sport here.

Although they failed to gain ground on the pace setting New York Yankees, who load them by three games, Boston's runnerup Red Sox Tuesday eliminated Cleveland from the American league pennant race by downing the Indians, 5 2. A crowd of 22,179 paid fans watched Mel Parnell, stylish Boston left hander, pitch and help bat himself to his 24th victory. He thus became the "winningest" Sox southpaw since the pitching days of the late Babe Ruth, who won 23 for the Sox more than 80 years ago. There was some measure of satisfaction in the victory as the Indians defeated the Sox in an unprecedented playoff game for the pennant last fall and then went on to win the world championship.
