Has '85 Tigers Billed as the greatest wild animal trainer of all Bert Nelson, idol of boys and girls of all ages, with his 35 jungle bred tigers and lions, an act never before attempted by a living human being. Packed every minute with danger to this young blonde animal genius, this act is an exhibition of skill and daring in the raw. Disproving the fact, long established that lions and tigers cannot inhabit the same cage, Nelson works with these two ferocious breeds of jungle beasts right in the same cage.

With nothing more than a whip and chair for protection, Nelson puts these snarling beasts through their routines, his face constantly wreathed in smiles. One of 60 Acfs Bert Nelson and his hair- raising act is but one of the 60 stupendous acts coming with the Great American Combined circus, comprised of feature acts from leading circuses such as Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey, A1 G. Barnes, Hagenbeck Wallace and others. Among the acts will be: The sensational leap of life, where the Great Dalbeanie leaps from the top of a tall stairway, straddling a wagon wheel, the Cressonians, starring Arlene, the only girl in the world doing a death-daring triple somersault; Walter Guice, the Funny Man Bareback rider; Rancho Cortez Liberty Horses, magnificent stallions, six black and six white, who each hold a number from one to 12 in their heads and without from their trainer, go into a perfect checker formation. The Great American Combined circus will be in Santa Ana on the date of May 29.

two per- jformances, afternoon and evening, under the auspices of Santa Ana Elks lodge, No. 794. WASHINGTON, May 13. A turnabout in administration business policy lay deep behind the sudden departure of General Robert E. Wood, the Sears-Roebuck president, from the New inner circle.

He was temporary business advisor to Harry Hopkins, the commerce secretary, and official business appeaser, but not much yet. resignation carried the usual polite explanation about "pressing private back in Chicago, and a very poignant regret that he had not seen Hopkins oftener. As such it rated no more attention than a squib on Page 8 under the funeral notices. But those who know both Wood and the situation understand the whole course of business appeasing upon which the business advisory coun vil had been working, has been dropped. A new and less appeasing approach is being worked up, the exact nature of which is not yet disclosable.

It is probably along, labor lines, wages and hours, rather than the tax lines originally planned. These sudden turns have occurred several times during the past 6 years, but never faster. The final decision was reached apparently last Sunday when Hopkins and Jystiee Douglas went down the river on the presidential yacht. Wood left Tuesday, at which time the possibility of the departure of other business men like Patterson in commerce and Hanes in the treasury reached the public prints. Since then also it has become evident no business tax appeasement program is to be espoused downtown.

Developments will undoubtedly be weeks taking their full form, but there is now no question about appeasement being out of the window, if it was ever in, and no doubt that further aggressive action is being planned. STYLES OF HOUSES lIMPROVEMENTS IN ERECTION Fashions and styles in houses were discussed by Wilbur Barr of the Barr Lumber company at regular Santa Ana Realty board meeting in Rossmore cafe. The speaker declared that fundamental styles and types in houses remain for long periods of time. Minimum houses can have fashion and style at a cost that is negligible, Barr said. Other points upon which Barr spoke were designing, planning, and insulation.

He also discussed whose use add extra comfort to homes. Carl Mock presided in the absence of President Ray Goodcell. Dr. John R. Steelman does not want constantly increasing appropriations from congress for his conciliation service in the labor department. He figures he can work better with small force conciliators. Last time he went before the house appropriations committee, the chairman asked PAINT POINTERS by BOB HOCKADAY Question: The trim work on my house has been painted a dark green for many years.

I wish to change it to white. Can this be done satisfactorily? If so, how do I go about B. S. Answer: For the best results the old coats should be completely removed by burning. If this is not done, alligatoring or plastic checking may result because of the wide difference between the soft sold colors and the harder white to be applied thereon.

If, for any reason, burning off is not desirable, thorough sanding with No. 1 sandpaper and dusting carefully is necessary prior to refinishing. Then use a special outside white, following label directions for application for a three-coat job for best results. Here is an intensely white finish when first applied, and one that will stay white throughout its life. It possesses splendid durability and will be sure to give you good service.

House paint may be purchased locally. Any question about paint or painting problems should be addressed to Bob Hockaday in care of this paper. They will be answered in an early issue. Watch a Republican member if he for answer in this column, wanted to ask Steelman any The questions. The Re 1 i a waved his hand and said, "Steelman can get anything he wants as far as why this is one government bureau that functions.

Last year it settled 4231 strike situations, an increase of 60 per cent over the previous year. Dr. Steelman calls everyone and goes about conciliating the same way. Once he attributed his successes to his total absence of authority. "We have no law to he said.

"We have no police power. We make anyone do anything. The result is we are welcome anywhere. In only six instances last year were our services In one case where a small textile mill was having trouble with workers, conciliators found the textile machinery was not functioning properly and this was one.of the causes of the labor dispute. One of his engineers actually fixed the machinery so it would run and other matters in dispute were readily conciliated.

This simple, level-headed desire to be of service has gained the conciliation service a widely recognized reputation inside, but somehow constructive accomplishments seem to get less outside publicity than mistakes. Mr. lecture to the senate for increasing farm parity payments and refusing to carry out its promise raise the money by taxation, was all true not all. Down at Mr. agriculture department you will hear another version.

'Tis said the excuse for the senate running out on its promise was provided by Mr. own treasury secretary, if not Mr. Roosevelt himself. When processing taxes seemed possible this season, Mr. Morganthau dashed to the White House with a protest against them.

He rightly called them a sales tax on consumers. Both the president and treasury secretary made known their ob jections. The processing tax movement died. As no one knows any other parity taxes that might be used, apparently the administration bears some responsibility for the at least in agricultural eyes. No Democrat here is losing any sleep about it, however.

Big farm payments are everywhere considered good presidential campaign material for next year, especially when the money comes from the federal till without taxes. The day of reckoning can surely be delayed beyond 1940. An insurrection is on in the senate against the state department edict requiring a bow from the hips six feet away from King George, and another bow three feet away if he extends his hand, and two bows going backwards on the way out. One senate leader of foreign affairs was so angry when he read the edict in the morning press that he gave up breakfast and could only stand a glass of buttermilk for lunch. "There may be an excuse for such excesses at the White House said he, "but be damned if I will make a fool of myself doing it at the lawn About half a dozen senators immediately were reported to be joining the they are serious.

Whereas small homes can readily be designed and built by almost anyone adhering to the code, the larger ones must pass more rigid test as to stresses, loads, and therefore require the efforts of architects or engineers. The very fact that experts have charge of most of the larger types of construction is good reason for its steady improvement, Another important reason is that the earthquake compelled a study of the weaknesses of masonry structures, with a resultant highly shock- resistant structure that would withstand almost any of abuses. Use Rods With Brick For a time after the bricks for walls were frowned up-1 on. Reinforced concrete, even though more expensive at the time, had preference, and the brick manufacturer was "in the as it were, and in a quandry as to what to do about it.

Now they reinforce the brick with iron rods running this way and that so thickly it appears that no bricks should be needed at all. Bond beams of concrete, also inforccd, hold the whole mass together as a solid unit. In there is so much metal used there! is hardly room within the forms; to do a clean job of puddling meaning of course, stirring up the cement mixture as poured to evenly mix and distribute the; rocks, sand, and cement. So again concrete and brick compete on an equal basis and are pecially useful when a combination of the two. Trusses Improved Another improvement is the roof trusses of recent They are cleverly designed.

Though made of lumber, nails practically useless in their struction. Cut to pattern, these! patented contraptions are held to-; gether with large bolts through metal plates. Curved to withstand weight, they can he made to span almost any width. Heiy, again iron rods are used to strengthen and bear a portion of! the load. Trained men with spe-l jugs, portable power saws, electric drills, electric wrenches, assemble these modern innovations in almost no time at all.

Whereas the cement slab floor in its usually applied form has been inclined to crack because of of this trouble has been overcome by stretching heavy mesh wire for the concrete to be poured into, thereby giving it greater strength of resistance. Permanent coloring also is mixed in or applied to the surface coat to eliminate any further need of paint or other decorative material.
