John Bjorje, superintendent of the packing plant of Klevenhausen at Altoona, has returned from an extended trip east and was a passenger on the steamer Madeline this morning. Spat tie loses Trade Seattle. Feb. 23. The falling off in Seattle's foreign trade is shown in figures submitted in the annual report of Port Warden Fred M.

Lathe. According to the report the foreign trade tonnage totaled 1.410,415 in 1920. In 1919 it to taled 1,884.106, a loss of 473.691 tons. This i 1920 represents a slump of 25 per cent in against 1919. Sailing From Coast to Coast San Francisco, Feb.

23. (I. X. For the first time in 15 years a sailing vessel has 'sailed from an Atlantic port for San Francisco. She is the Robert Dollar ship Dunsyre, loaded with gen eral merchandise for this port.

She comes via the canal. Mail Ijeaves for Orient The largest shipment of Portland mail that has ever left here- direct for the Orient consisted of 734 bags bound for China and Japan on board the West Xiva'ria that cleared Monday, Postmaster John M. Jones said this morning. The former record mail shipment was 724 bags. News of the Port Departures February 23 Curacao.

Pacific Time. Four offshore carriers will wind up the month of February in the grain business with a total of approximately 36,600 tons. The Danish motorship Peru will get away Thursday with 8200 tons of wheat, inal foreign and dispatched by the Kerr-Gifford company. She will be followed on the same day by the British steamship Pengreep, with J300 tons for the Pacific Grain company. Monday will wind up the list with the clearance of the Norwegian steamship Hermion, Kerr-Gifford Co.

with 7800 tons and bound for Hamburg. The Norwegian motorship Theodore Jloosevelt, Houser interests, will finish at Astoria with 2100 tons of wheat. From Portland the Roosevelt will take about 7300 tons. She will get away from Portland Friday morning and will clear from Astoria Monday, the last of the grain ships for the month. 9 In the coast-to-coast service the steamships Steelmaker and Willfaro will clear Thursday.

Both vessels are carrying large cargoes of ties for the Atlantic Kide. The intercoastal business is showing an increase, largely due to the new conference rates recently adopted at the meeting in San Frani isco. JORT DIlKIMafc COLUMBIA TO BE LAUNCHED THURSDAY The Port of Portland's new all steel, $123,000 dredge Columbia will be launched from the ways of the Coast Shipbuilding company at the Foot of Glbbs street at 11 :30 a. m. Thursday.

vAn invitation to the public to attend the ceremony was issued this morning hy officials of the Port of Portland. The completion of the new Columbia provides the port with three giant suction dredges, each equipped with 30-inch pumps. The fleet, is now considered qual or superior to any similar, fleet possessed by other' ports of the United States. The Columbia was constructed by the pacific Marine Iron Works and Mrs. James H.

Polhemus, wife of the manager of the Port of Portland, will christen it. The dredge is equipped with steel house and hull. She has a 1500 horsepower, four cylinder triple expansion engine, two Heine safety boilers and Hutch ovens prepared for the burning of "hog" fuel, namely sawdust and waste wood from saw mills. Except that ana has a steel house not possesed by the other craft, the new Columbia is a virtual duplicate of the big dredge TV ill amette. now in the service of the port.

Much of the machinery used on the old dredge Columbia, which was recently dismantled, has, been placed on the new- craft. The contract price of the Colum bla was 415.150 and this with extras will brine the total cost to about 000. new dredge will be capable of moving 15,000 yards of sand a day and will prove a most important adjunct in the improvement of the channel between Portland and the mouth of the Willam ette. It is announced here that the Admiral line will probably put the steamer Admiral Evans on the run from Portland to San Francisco, stopping at Coos Bay, In place of the steamer Curacao, which is now making the run and which will be transferred to Alaska waters. The Admiral Evans was formerly the Bteamship Buchman. She measures 2393 gross and 1507 net tons.

She carries a crew of 45 and has up-to-date passenger accommodations. Local officials of the Admiral line have not been advised a3 to whether both craft will be kept on the run.
