I SCHOOLS The Bellingham Herald wwwbellinghamheraldcom MORE FOR YOUR FAMILY IN LIFESTYLES Explore solar energy with your children in the World of Wbnder C4 Find most complete listing of events for families and parents on C3 A6 Monday August 8 2005 INSIDE WHATCOM COUNTY SCHOOLS STUDENT PROFILE Name: Krista Coffey- Age: 16 School: Femdale High Class: Junior-to-be Summer activities school highlights: During the (Northwest Washington) Fair I'll be taking my horse for the open day on Thursday (Aug 18) and be taking four of my goats for 4-H and three for FFA gotten overall goat for 4-H the last two years I got my first goat in fifth grade and gotten more and more and started breeding them myself really fun animals Either goats or horses are my favorite animals Right now I have 12 goats and a three-quarter Arabian named Belle I hope to gain place in all my riding classes in Western and English pleasure been participating in the fair for seven years and I always really look forward to it For work this summer been cleaning the kennels at A Better Pet in Custer This was my first year in FFA and I got elected treasurer I was on the honor roll most of the year with a grade-point average around 35 Goals: Right now it's to win a third consecutive goat award and to place in all the equestrian events at the fair At Femdale I want to graduate with my fourth year on the honor roll Td also like to hold office again in the FFA For college I will probably start at BTC for the program and then go on to Washington State My career ambition is to become a large-animal veterinarian because I like working with animals so much always had animals my entire life and Pm not afraid of blood and stuff I also enjoy helping kids and HI probably be a 4-H parent some day MARK BURNS BELLINGHAM HERALD Krista Coffey 16 lives with her family and 16 pets In Custer She will be showing eight animals at the Northwest Washington Fair Including goats and her horse She would eventually like to be a veterinarian PARENT PROFILE TEACHER PROFILE Name: Marlene Noteboom Age: 49 Work: Leader of Pews on the Run 4-H club How you help kids with summer activities: We work all year long but dogs are a little different Starting in February we look really heavily on obedience and training right through summer to the fair We also work hard on fitting and showing We meet weekly all year but we get a little more intense as the fair nears We have 12 kids in our club ranging from age 7 to almost 18 We also love to do pet therapy visits at the Christian Health Care Center in Lynden The seniors the kids and the dogs all love it an amazing thing for the kids because a lot of them are not exposed to dealing too often with elderly people The maturity that idds gain in 4-H is will have a foal next March and MacKenzie will raise and train the baby- That will be her 4-H project in the future The 4-H program is incredibly awesome for kids especially because they have to get out and give presentations and learn lessons in how to be gracious winners and losers Advice for other parents about summer Spend as much time with your kids as possible and find things to do together good to ask your kids what they like to do and try to tie that in with your own schedule I recommend reading during the down time Another good idea is to see as much of Whatcom County as you can because there are so many beautiful things to do here Be sure to take your kids to the fair! To see all the kids with their animals is really inspiring a great community event and the kids really appreciate having people come It can be a thrill for kids from the city to go through all the animal hams just incredible seen kids who would be holding back and three or four years later they can just take over in conversations and take charge and know how to handle themselves Summer advice for parents: I have daughters ages 17 and 12 My advice to parents is to keep kids real busy in the summer important to have them occupied rather than have them sitting in front of the TV Be willing to listen if they change their minds or don't feel comfortable with some activity found that kids are really intuitive so definitely important to listen to them I really recommend 4-H for kids Parents have to be able to really what their kid wants to do I do introductory classes in 4-H to help kids and parents get the chance to see going on and to decide if this is what they want to do Name: Patti Erickson Age: 41 Kids In school: MacKenzie 12 sev-enth-grader-to-be at Meridian Middle School Cody 15 sophomore-to-be at Meridian High What are your kids doing this summer?
