The answer is always "Of course It's good to see you" But the startled look in the eyes provides a more truthful one He makes conversation but it is forced predictable and meaningless He would rather be watching his four-year-old sneeze with a mouthful of oatmeal than talking to i this man whom he swears silently he has never seen in his life BUT THE CORNERED coach talks for two minutes clearly the longest two minutes of his life then looks at his watch and apologizes for having to depart for a team meeting The man understands rolls up his newspaper digs a set of car keys from his pocket and leaves smiling the satisfied smile of a man who has accomplished his mission On days of college football games you can find this man and this scene in any motel or hotel lobby that is accommodating a favorite team Or you can find this scene enacted by a variety of All you need are the right lobbies Then they become melting pots havens for has-beens hangers-on well-wishers politicians girl friends and parents of players affluent alumni school officials migrant farm workers doorbell salesmen heavy equipment operators Lobbying becomes a whole new ball game one with no apparent set of rules for its participants except "Establish your position and hold it at all From the time that a team arrives such as Ole Miss did here Friday night for its Saturday night game with Villa- nova this new breed of lobbyist is sc-! tive His intentions usually are honorable He merely wishes to belong to identify with the football players and coaches that he idolizes He doesn't always go about It In the right way though The veteran lobbyist realizes that coaches and players have offensive and defensive meetings films to watch taplngs (ankles shoulders etc) to attend to before a night game No they don't spend an entire Saturday afternoon sprawled in their motel rooms killing time until a 7:30 or 8 pm kickoff And they can't spend hours In the lobby either signing autographs shak- ing hands and patting children on the head -v TEAMS THAT HAVE the large followings on road trips such as Ole Miss has when It plays here are constantly faced with trouble of this sort They treat it like trouble though In fact they welcome the attention and acknowledge their appreciation no matter how hying the circumstances or how obnoxious the lobbyist They know that the real trouble has begun when that paunchy middle-aged man who blurts "Hello coach remember me?" is nowhere around JACKSON MISS' SEPT To be very truthful' there la little re' on for the paunchy mkktt-age nwi 1 to be settled on the sofa summing his newspaper in this particular motel lobby His name isn't on the motel register or any other in this city He didn't choose this motel's restaurant for breakfast he had eaten at home And he isn't in this lobby waiting on anyone in particular Oh he Is familiar with several of this weekend guests even though he has met them only once I i unty Davis Sports Results (525-6311) I I I 1 Rolf Call Pram Our Prmlankm PRO POOTBAU YORK JRTS-VMran Emr-Mn Motor and Winta Hill hava Monad 1971 coni rod thanbv kovlna tha club1!
