-Money went to 18 per cent Monday and stocks broke all the way from a fraction "to 14 point. The good went down with the bad for there was nothing against any particular stock. An-v other earthquake In Mexico helped ythe bears as did "alio the failure of the supreme court to hand down a decision in the stock tax cases. A minor decision of the supreme court against certain railroads added to the of the faithful When the big operators began selling freely, liquid- tlon was Joined to short sales. There fitful rallies during the day, kut at the close the weakness waa sincere, with no effort on the part of shorts to cover.

The hlg-h rate of call money was a surprise to the street, for although the local bank statement was very bad the situation as a whole was good ss reflected in the combined report of 12 re- gional banka But evidently the reserve (ward Is determined that each reserve district shall bring its percentage of reserve up again. Money was not plentiful even at the "high ratea Early In the" day Wall street had a report that a new earthquake In Mexico had shaken the bottom out of the big oil wells. It was In vain that official announcements were made by the oil com- paoies to the effect that not only had there been no damage In the oil fields. ADVANTAGE GAINED IN PLACING FUND WITH Cafe of Nils Olson Cited to Show Wisdom of PJan Followed by County Board. Aa vantages ef placing funds for investment In the care of competent trust companies are well exemplified In the annual report of the Title Trust company In the matter of a fund set aside for the maintenance of Nils Olson.

Olson lost his sight and was otherwise ipermanontly injured in a powder explo sion on tne coiumoia river nignway in September, 1914. 'In January, 1117. the Multnomah county commissioners set aside a fund amounting to 1601-8 1, the interest and principal to be used in supplying Olson with an allowance of 35 per month during years, a life expectancy based on the findings of the Oregon state compensation law. It is part of the agreement that any moneys re mslnlna? in the trust fund at the time of the death of Nils Olson or at the ex piration of the 28.9 years shall revert to the cbunty treasurer. The fund was placed with the Title A Trust company for Investment and their last annual report.

Issued January 1, shows that, though Olson hss re ceived his allowance regularly since January. 1917, the principal amount has diminished only $14. Based on its pres ent earnings, the Investment will re turn more than one half of the original fund to the county treasurer at the end of the 8.9 year period. Olson Is living with relatives at Mal-mo. Sweden, and.

according to officials of the Title A Trust company, his allowance, at the present rate of exchange, amounts to $42.50 in the currency of that country.
