Manning's hope can be realized Early in the new year Social Credit will call a national policy conference. At that time a date will be set for a leadership convention, but it has already been specified that it must take place during 1968. Mr. Patterson has not yet decided whether or not he will be a candidate. Real Caouette has said he will be.

That, of course, depends on a successful outcome of the unity talks. So far the moves towards unity have been on the organizational, rather than the political, level. The Social Credit MPs have not been invited, but the Creditiste MPs have been there. The Chest said it is convinced of the value of the service but that its own constitution prohibits the Chest from donating funds itself. It added that the nursery needs a small amount of financial aid for about four months, fcfter which it should be self-sustaining.

Council reactions to the suggestion were varied. Alderman Harvey Robson could see no reason why the council should subsidize working mothers. "They should be at home, anyway," he declared. Some other council members expressed sympathy with women who did not wish to be a burden on welfare, and were therefore going out to work. Alderman William Nickel said it could be a tough proposition for a mother to try to earn a small amount of money and at the same time pay the required sum for her children to go to a day nursery.

Alderman M. G. Osborne queried whether the council could legally subsidize a private operation, but was reminded by Mayor Allan Holder that it is already doing so in the case of the ambulance service. A motion that the council seek more information on the request was passed by aldermen, with Alderman Robson opposed. Angels! Comel Cjaracje DAV1ES BROS.

With the approach of the annual Christmas Prom, nominations for this year's Snow Queen were held. Each student cast a vote for the girl he or she thought most worthy of the honor.

Among the qualifications considered, outstanding personality, attractive a a a and graceful bearing, were the most important. The five girls nominated by the student body were: Carol Abrams, Gail Dupuis, Rilla Preston, Linda Robertson and Deborah Rumming. This Friday at the Prom, one of these girls will be crowned by the present queen, Marie Marsh-ell, as Snow Queen for 1967-1968. "Over half of Canada's drug addicts are in Vancouver," said Dr. A.

Meetings have been called unilaterally by the Creditiste officers and press statements issued without consulting the Social Credit caucus.

The top Creditiste officers are two former MPs who were among the six Quebec members who were expelled from the caucus in 1963 for pledging support to Pearson. Mr. Caouette has made it abundantly clear that he has no sympathy for separatism but Mr. Patterson would like to see him make it clear that his one-Canada stand is not conditional upon the rest of Canada agreeing to special status for Quebec. So far the two leaders have not met to discuss a merger.
