teaching metb-yods conducted (he workshop She presented programs which are approved by the: National Council of Teachers of English Eugene Norris who heads the English Department at Beaufort High School stated that this workshop was the first of its kind held in Beaufort and that it is very unusual for the secondary school to conduct program of this nature Dr Gunn based discussions on the Unit Method of Teach-ing which combines the four areas of communication- reading writing- listening and speaking She stressed the idea that the four areas ate correlat ed in the thematic unit rather than taught separately as in the traditional English program Throughout the sessions she used as her thesis that -grammar taught through composition is more functional and she urged organization of ideas and se- quential steps" in their development In considering the transition from deductive to inductive learning from "pouring out1 or lecturing to students' discovering for themselves Dr Gunn explained that it is the inductive method which our students ready to do without us" She stated that the school should be a model society and stressed the sequential development of skills and objectives from kindergarten to the twelfth grade Besides meeting with the English teachers from 8:30 am to 5 pm daily Dr Gunn 'held grade-level conferences and consulted with individual teachers
