6 THE CIIILLIWACK PROGRESS, June 25, Chilliwack Man CO Army Sappers Train On Pied Piper Site Near a city of legend on the banks of one of West Germany's most important rivers, sappers of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group are undergoing a month of special training. Chilliwack Girl Wins Scholarship Miss Olwen Irving, 235 McDonald road, R. 3, Chilliwack, has been awarded a scholarship to attend the University of B.C. summer school of theater, July 7 to August 23. Miss Irving won the award which was donated by the Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation.

The award was one of 10 awarded to students attending UBC summer school. The sappers' tented camp is located on the western outskirts of the famous German town where, about 700 years ago, the Pied Piper lured a plague of rats into the Weser River. Later, the story goes, when payment for his deed was refused by the city fathers, he used his famous pipe to lead the town's children across the river into the hills. this year's Soap Box Derby at The Weser River, on which the Sardis Canadian will train is, in addition to being a legendary graveyard, an inland waterway leading to the northern German port of Bre men.

Surrounded by the history and commerce of Hameln, the Can adian sappers will train on Bail- Mission City on July 1 lor me right to represent Western Canada at the International Soap Box Derby at Akron, Ohio in August. Boys from all parts of British Columbia and Alberta will start arriving in Mission City on June 28 and 29. While in Mission City they wll be the guests of Mission City Kinsmen, and will be housed and fed in "Kin-Town" with headquarters in the Mission Armouries.
