Editor AUSTIN Texas Dec 5 The Demons of Darkness wearing burnt orange jerseys and spitting fire from ghostly holes where eyes should be leapt from their smoldering caverns here Saturday afternoon and cooked proud Porkers into little strips of dried-out bacon Mighty Texas ranked No 1 unleashed the venom of worlds unknown to most men and struck down the fourth-ranked Razorbacks 42-7 It was shocking enough to cause real doubts about the powers of all good guys and that includes the Tooth Fairy The Longhorns won the Southwest Conference championship and a spot against Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl with a devastating ground game and a devilish defense Look no further than running backs Steve Worster and Jim Bertelsen Bobsey Twins they are not but Ghengis Kahn would have given his head for such vicious attackers of the enemy Worster supposedly injured carried 21 times for 126 yards and Bertelsen went into the Porkers 30 times for 189 yards The Wall of China would be a fair opponent for these two In all Texas smashed 464 yards on the ground A Memorial Stadium record crowd of 68447 watched the Pigs led to slaughter by an offense that could muster but 20 yards rushing There was speculation that Texas might have to leave its powerful Wishbone offensive strike formation to cope with the Razorback defense but that apparently was just wishful thinking on the part of Arkansas spend the holidays at home for the first time since the 1967 season Texas scored 14 points before Arkansas could mark The Porkers then came back to face an unmovable Texas line which held four times inside its two The Longhorns took possession marched 99 yards for a 21-7 lead and it was over almost before it began quickly chart scoring drives: (1) 78 yards in 10 plays it took 4:03 and quarterback Eddie Phillips got it from seven yards out (2) 83 yards in 14 plays it took 5: 30 and Worster got the last two yards on a massive bounce at center (3) 99 yards in 15 plays it took 6:05 and Bertelsen got it from six yards out (4) 46 yards in nine plays it took 4: 08 and it was Worster from two yards out (5) 60 yards in 12 plays it took 5:06 and Bertelsen scored from eight yards out and (6) 48 yards in eight plays it took 3:56 and Bertelsen scored from five yards out So Texas held the ball for 28 minutes in its scoring drives almost half the playing time in the game It was an unbeatable combination Texas coach Darrell Royal told his team: love and then noted that the season was not yet over still have Notre But Royal could not contain his glee injuries got well and it's been one of the finest days since been Texas defensive line coach Pat Patterson credited his lads with playing a near-perfect game it it was close to it The offense was hot but we were too Defensively the key was that our rush put the heat on Bill Montgomery (the Arkansas quarterback) and except for a couple of screens we shut Those gave Arkansas its only reason to cheer They came in the early going of the second period Montgomery got tailback Jon Richardson on a screen for 22 yards and after a pass interference call put the Porkers in play on the Texas 12 Richardson went wide left for the last 12 Texas leading now 14-7 came back strong but fumbled on the Arkansas 38 Two keeps by Montgomery and a 15-yard penalty for hitting late got the Porkers a first on the Texas 25 Montgomery then swung it out to Richardson and he moved it to the two but there Texas held Coach Frank Broyles called on tailback Bill Burnett his longtime ace in close but Burnett could not muster the power to get across in two shots Richardson also failed and Montgomery was knocked down on a fourth down try Left end Bill Atessis played up to his All-American rating and he got solid support from such as linebackers Stan Mauldin Scott Henderson and Bill Zapalac Texas intent on stacking national championships back-to-back could ask no more than Worster gave on this cloudy and cool day in Central Texas The first two times Texas now 10-0 had the ball he did not carry But on the third he got the Longhorns off to a touchdown by cracking his 6-0 208-pound frame up the middle for 12 yards and a first on the Texas 29 Did Worster expect such an easy game? don't consider it that easy I hurt my left shoulder on the kickoff But I find any sympathy So I just went out in the second half and decided I was going to play no matter what I left the game late in the half when my hip started to hurt a little I guess it was best to get out while I was still There will be no attempt made here to explain away Arkansas' performance on this day The Razorbacks finishing 9-2 were simply overpowered and excuses in the light of the final production in all categories for both teams would be childish As darkness settled over the Texas campus the tower standing so tall above it turned a bright orange It signaled another victory the 30th straight for the Longhorns (Additional Story and Pictures On Page 2 Scoring and Dennis Coleman to stall the first penetration But the next time LSU got the ball it scored Safety Craig Bums intercepted a Manning pass at the LSU 33 and returned it eight yards Ole Miss yielded another 15-yards on a personal foul penalty putting LSU in business at the Ole Miss 44 Passes from quarterback Bert Jones to speedster Jimmy LeDoux were good for big yardage first on a 24-yarder and then for 20 yards and a touchdown with 9:43 left Mark Lumpkin's kick made the score 7-7 A Rebel field goal attempt of 52 yards by Cloyce Hinton never got off the ground due to a bad snap and LSU threatened again before Aldridge recovered another fumble at the Rebel 19 Late in the first period an interception return of 38 yards by middle guard Jeff Horn put Ole Miss in position for another field goal attempt Horn grabbed pass and returned it to the LSU nine The Rebel offense move but Poole hit a 22-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead with 14: 13 left in the second period But that was the extent of Ole first-half merriment LSU stormed 75 yards in six days to take a 14-10 lead One crucial play was a controversial one when Chris Dantin took an 18-yard pass from quarterback Buddy Lee A Rebel tackier hit Dantin who dropped the ball and another Rebel recovered Officials ruled a completion and no fumble recovery giving LSU a first down at the Rebel 47 With the Reb defense flustered Lee flipped a 46-yard touchdown pass to Andy Hamilton with 11 minutes left Lumpkin's kick was good Late in the period the Rebels were forced to punt from deep in their territory and ace defensive back Tommy Casanova returned the kick 61 yards for a touchdown with 3: 58 left As the half ended LSU tackle Ronnie Estay trapped Manning in the end zone for a loss of seven yards and a Tiger safety The score was 23-10 at intermission (See David Bloom on Page 2 Scoring and Statistics on Page 5) By WOODROW PAIGE JR Staff Writer KNOXVILLE Dec 5 hearts were young and gay and the blood in their veins turned to orange icewater on a day intended for fireside chess games child works hard for a living it is said No child ever worked harder for a football living than the Vol and UCLA offspring did Saturday afternoon under the watchful eyes of 63242 Pay no attention to this score: Tennessee 28 UCLA 17 They make games closer than this one and it was predicted as dusk moved into Neyland Stadium that the NCAA would prohibit another UCLA-Tennessee skirmish Almost everytime they get together and it started in 1965 in that wild one in Memphis the earth takes on a different shape With their backs to the bristling Tennessee River and only 3: 33 remaining in the game the Vols down by three points had the ball at their 33 A Bobby Scott pass to Lester McClain moved Tennessee to the UCLA 35 Three plays netted six yards and it was fourth-and-four at the 29 Vol coach Bill Battle said the game rested on this play No one disagreed Scott dropped back find his primary receiver but spotted a begging Vol tailback Don McLeary at the Bruin 19 for a first down Curt Watson then twisted the knife in UCLA's back Tennessee called the veer play (an off-tackle run) for the first time in the day and Watson popped through A UCLA defensive back tripped him but he stuck an arm down to the Tartan turf regained his balance and looked up to see a Bruin river parting for his trip to the goal George Hunt kicked it to 21-17 with 2:20 left Tennessee held last try and had the ball one more time The Vols tried to run out the clock but UCLA let them calling timeouts at every juncture The move backfired as Tennessee finally shoveled the dirt over the visitors with a McLeary dive into the end zone with eight seconds left extra point provided the final count The Orange broke all sorts of records By BOBBY HALL Staff Writer BATON ROUGE La Dec 5 -Louisiana State University found the end of a football rainbow and a Southeastern Conference championship in its own backyard Saturday night And when the search was complete a battered gang of Ole Miss Rebels lay with their backs flat against the turf of Tiger Stadium looking up at a bright score-board which showed LSU a 61-17 winner The Tiger total represented the most points scored against an Ole Miss team since Alabama posted a 64-0 victory over the Rebels in 1930 The ferocious Tigers not only cashed a 54) league record for their first SEC championship since 1958 but they also punched a ticket to the Orange Bowl with an 8-2 over-all mark The eighth-ranked Tigers will meet Nebraska in Miami on New Day The sweetness of this LSU victory was almost more than a crowd of 67590 could stand and about 10000 of them swarmed the field as the final seconds ticked away Then while LSU fans danced in a victory celebration the Ole Miss band played Over Troubled in fitting reference to the Reb cause The victory marked the first time since 1964 that LSU had conquered Ole Miss and the margin of victory was just as Indicative of the beating the Rebels absorbed Even with Archie Manning the Rebel quarterback who played despite a broken left arm at the controls for about a half the Tigers were by far the best team on this night when showers of oranges frequently peppered the redshirted Rebels as a regional television audience watched Manning hit 12 of 27 passes for 82 yards and one touchdown Several times the crowd chanted and later bellowed Want after he left the game in the second half Ole Miss trainers applied a bandage to right elbow when he got to the sideline and he did not return to action Meanwhile the LSU offense was destroying Ole Miss which will take a 7-3 record into its Gator Bowl test against Auburn on Jan 2 Ole Miss finished with a 4-2 SEC mark LSU dominated the statistics by rolling up 505 yards in total offense compared to 194 for the Rebels LSU struck for 27 first downs while Ole Miss got only 13 The Tigers shattered a handful of school records and tied a national record for touchdowns scored by punt returns with three Despite committing four first-half turnovers LSU enjoyed a 23-10 lead and a total yardage advantage of 264-71 at inter-mission The second half was all LSU except for a three-yard Rebel touchdown run by quarterback Shug Chumbier in the third period second-half heroics included a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown by Craig Burns a 55-yard scoring run by Art Cantrelle a 13-yard touchdown pass from Bert Jones to Ken Kavanaugh a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown by Tommy Casanova (his second punt return touchdown of the night) and a nine-yard scoring burst by Jimmy LeDoux Cantrelle was the Tiger workhorse offensively carrying 25 times for 117 yards Quarterback Buddy Lee completed seven of 10 passes for 177 yards and me touchdown and Jones hit on seven of 14 for 114 yards and two touchdowns Andy Hamilton led Tiger receivers with three grabs for 98 yards LeDoux and Kavanaugh also caught three total yardage was 70 34 Ole Miss struck for a 7-0 lead on its first possession Rebel tackle Elmer Allen forced Tiger back Arthur Cantrelle to fumble and John Aldridge another Reb tackle recovered at the LSU 22 From there It took Manning only fourplays to score Tbe key gainers were passes to tight tod Jim Poole one for 13 yards and the ccond for nine yards and a touchdown with 13:25 left in the period kick LSIMtormed back and it took a fumble Tennessee now 10-1 Bowl meeting with Day Scott set these team marks: Most passes attempted in a season (252) total season offense (1786) career passing yardage (3461) career total offense (3580) Hunt finished with the most extra-point kicks for a season (43) and most made (42) and he broke the record for field goals attempted (21) The team set several other marks but fell one short of the national interception record The Vols made only one Saturday and finished with 36 a Southeastern Conference mark nevertheless Battle said said it was going to be a wild one and no doubting it UCLA had more speed than anyone played this year But it would have been a shame if our players had lost the loss to Auburn (36-23) I told the guys that Tennessee teams lose the close ones We went to work on that and when we were down late I told them they could do it They kept their poise and proved me UCLA coach Tommy Prothro said Tennessee it to us This is the best Tennessee team since been at UCLA I thought our team played real well on Neither team generated much of an offense in the first half Tennessee managed one long drive moving from its 23 to a 7-0 lead as a lame Scott engineered the march With the Vols moving from the UCLA 47 Scott lofted a pass intended for McClain at the Bruin goal line A pass interference call on the defending Reynaud Moore gave Tennessee possession on the UCLA one Three plunges later McLeary rolled over the left side for six points Hunt kicked the point and the half rested that way The Bruins who made only one first down in the first two quarters found a new weapon as the second half began the fumble recovery Tennessee came out as the band was playing the alma mater and apparently was still humming the lyrics when the ball went tumbling away into grasp on the first play from scrimmage It took only two plays for the touchdown with Marv Kendricks doing all the damage He went for 11 to the Tennessee 18 and carried it in on the next play The conversion tied it Later in the quarter Scott picked the UCLA defense clean hitting six of seven passes From the 13 he sliced the middle of the field and McClain grabbed the throw for six points Hunt was successful again Each team tried a field goal in the opening minutes of the final stanza kick soured but With the scoreboard blinking Tennessee 14 UCLA 10 the Vols tried to mount a time-killing drive It was going well until a Scott misfire settled on a blue jersey Ron Carver picked off the pass at the 15 and saw nothing but open field With the ease of a loping deer he ran it to the end of the stadium and Tennessee was staring into a three-point deficit after the extra point kick Tim Priest the Vol captain who now makes his home in Memphis said there a way UCLA was going to keep us away from So with 3:33 remaining the voyage to the victory land began (Scoring and Statistics on Page 5) LSU's Hard Rush Pressures Rebel Quarterback Archie Manning As He Searches For An Open Receiver -UPI Ttlaptwto.
