As Archie Man ning (18) Swings Into Action Photo fey WchardGordMr Anxious Moments Did Not Linger By BOBBY HALL John Vaught waded through the merri- ment of the Ole Miss dressing room and recalled a few moments of battle with Memphis State that so enjoyable thought never get a the veteran Ole Miss football coach said in reviewing a 47-13 victory over Memphis State before a crowd of 50164 last night at Memphis Memorial Stadium But after that first magic moment when tailback Randy Reed sailed over the right ride of the line for a Rebel touchdown with 3: 05 left in the first period Ole Miss was on its way we got some Vaught said we got a lot of breaks They (Memphis State) suffered a lot at the expense of inexperienced The Tiger inexperience was measured in four Ole Miss interceptions and five fumbles of which the Rebels recovered three Vaught obviously was pleased that his Rebels seemed to be taking over where they left off following an 8-3 record of a year ago The coach especially was pleased with the defense first unit defense played real Vaught said was the most pleasing tiling about the whole ball game to The Rebels yielded 216 yards in total offense while gaining 488 While Vaught praised the Rebel defense quarterback Archie Manning hailed the offense performance was significant to say the least and one which must be considered a good kickoff for a season in which he is a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy like to play a game like Manning said we would get up the line to run a pass play I just felt like the receiver was going to be Most of the time the receivers were open and Manning was quick on the delivery trigger He completed 17 of 22 passes for 180 yards with no interceptions Split end Floyd Franks caught six passes for 71 yards including one for a touchdown Tight end Jim Poole hauled in five for 39 yards Manning rolled up 44 yards and scored two touchdowns on 10 rushing attempts Manning was extremely pleased with the Rebel running game Reed (tailback) and Bob Knight (tailback) did a great job of picking the Manning said Reed gained 95 yards on 17 carries while Knight ran eight times for 53 yards The Rebel offensive strategy was to establish a running game early The plan was to hit inside the Tiger line rather than sweep the ends like the Rebs did in a 28-3 victory last year at Oxford figured they would try to cut us off outside this Vaught said knew have to go inside with the running game They just took the outride game away from While the bright spots overshadowed the bad for Ole Miss there were some areas in which the Rebels must improve Vaught was quick to moan about the kicking game The Rebels missed three field goal attempts two by Cloyce Hinton and one by Crowell Armstrong and misfired three times on extra print attempts had been doing a good job in practice but he came up tonight (last night) with a pulled leg muscle of some Vaught said had to go with Armstrong who been kicking much at The punting game much better but Vaught did not express as much concern with his punters not really worried about the Vaught said and Larry Northam will be Armstrong punted three times for a 39-yard average and Northam booted one for 32 yards Defensively there were not a great number of individual Rebel standouts but there was balance a factor wrich always pleases Vaught Linebacker Armstrong was the leading tackier with five individual stops Linebacker Fred Brister end Dennis Coleman tackle Elmer Allen and linebacker Reggie Dill contributed four each All in all it was a good night for the Rebels who have their eye on a high national ranking just always good to get a victory under your Vaught sighed And no matter how you reshuffle the plays the man who will stand out in the mind of Tiger coach Billy Murphy is Manning It was Manning who trotted through the bedlam of postgame traffic near the goal line to shake hands with Murphy the world had a lot more like him we would be a lot better Murphy said (Additional Stories and Pictures on Page 1 Section 1 and Page 1 This Section Statistics on Page 5) David Bloom Spreading The Wealth Archie Praises His Line Some Mutual Admiration them the credit" Archie Manning said them the big headlines like one time Say the front six did The Ole Miss quarterback ticked off the names: Billy Coker and Skip Jemigan the guards Buddy Mitchell and Worthy McClure the tackles Wimpy Winther at center and Jim Poole at tight end never had such protection The blocking was just superb Last year they were super this year All this and more came on the heels of (He 47-13 victory over Memphis State a personal triumph for Manning starting the season that may lead him to the Heisman Trophy went into the game in the same frame of mind we did in the Tennessee game last year We decided we were going to run that ball right down Memphis State's throat 1 think they did pretty much what we thought they'd do on defense But this is a young green team you can say I want to play them later in the season be one good football team And it was the same thing last year They got Last year Memphis State was beaten 28-3 by Ole Miss but went on to a fine 8-2 season McCoy Speaks Of No 45 It would be less than fair to say Memphis State played well Jay McCoy the Tiger tailback dragged himself off the field in bruised dejection he said even a little bit They had us well-scouted 1 was impressed with the quickness of the defense The best ever seen Much finer than expected all week know we can play better I just know it Here I ve played against Ole Miss three years and never acoreda touchdown go down that never scored I guess 1 11 'just go home and cry with my The kid brightened a little and said that No 45 really impressed me He was all over the place on defense No 45 is Crowell Armstrong a linebacker and the case was taken to him He said isn't that McCoy a good runner? Man he can move A Little Shy On Kicking best game? 1 hope so but there were a lot of best games around And I hope I have a better day got a lot of games to play But this was a pretty tough team big score or not I guess my kicking wasn't so hot I didn even bring my kicking shoe How many did I miss? It was several including field goals and extra points but Ole Miss coach John Vaught forgave him at least until next week Bill Vandevender another linebacker commented on Steve Leech the Memphis State quarterback playing his first varsity game the kid a chance a little inexperienced and kind or sketchy but he never quit trying I think Gerald Tinker (halfback) is something else as fast as everybody said and everybody has been saying a lot about him Vaught took the game in stride One down and nine to go and hopefully for him a Southeastern Conference championship at the end of the 10-game rainbow felt like win it after we had 33 he said without cracking a smile Emphasis On The Negative The really startling aspects of the game were on the negative side Memphis State went 23 minutes and 10 seconds before earning a first down and the Tigers were shut out of Ole Miss territory until the last two minutes of the first half The middle of the Memphis State defense was never a match for the Reb blockers and while the secondary played valiantly especially Walter Daggett the boys in the back room had to make more than their share of tackles A The Tigers were awfully late getting around to the pass on third-down plays and that cost them Perhaps it was the game plan but it left management open to question Tinker as swift as he was had very few chances to eet past the line of scrimmage When he did he really moved out It was too bad he get credit for the pass he caught for what was an apparent touchdown The officials spotted an infraction and that one will never go into the statistics Consensus of the 50164 in attendance no matter what side they were on was that defensing Manning was little more than impossible in some situations He not only could pass well but he ran inside and out and setting a defense fora good man having a good day tea little difficult Manning said to hang the credit on the line OK here it is Who wants to dispute a guy like that? Well always around when a team gets kicked 47-13 as the Memphis State Tigers did by the Ole Miss Rebels And as for the football coaches they have to be there too Tiger coach Billy Murphy who has had more than his share of Bronx cheers in the past 12 years have the offensive execution he needed to slip past the nationally-ranked (No 5) Rebs The worst part of the matter as the 50164 who watched can agree was that the Tiger offensive was supposed to be the better of the two Memphis State units thought we could zone which would have been called back anyway because of an illegal porcedure call against the Tigers was just said Tinker made up my mind to make up for that mistake the next time I got the And Tinker did reconcile his wrong-doing But the other Tigers didn't you make that many mistakes against a football team like Ole Miss you Murphy tinued give (Archie) Manning the ball as much as we The Tigers turned the ball over to Manning and the Rebels three times on fumbles and four times on pass interceptions "Manning is the best said Murphy knew that before we played just a fine football Memphis State's defense W'1 Have a question about last Ole Miss-Memphte Matp season-opener at Memphis Memorial Stadium then ask Tiger coach Billy Murphy through The Commercial Hey Coach series The questions which must be postmarked no later than noon tomorrow should be sent to the Sports Department 594 Union (38101) an- swers will be published in Wednesday's editions of The Commercial AppeaL.
