I New Highway Surface Breaking Up A section of the resurfaced Trans Canada highway at the east end of Sumas Prairie is already breaking up, according to reports. The 5.6 miles of reconstructed road west of Barrowtown is being given a basic coat. Between two and three miles remain to be done but already the eastern re section: is going to pieces under the heavy traffic.

Rain has been hampering paving crews. High Return Reported From Sunflowers Manitoba farmers are harvesting what may well prove the best sunflower crop in history. A co-operative vegetable oil plant reported more than one million pounds of seed processed during the first week in the harvests. Sunflower acreage has increased to a point where additional facilities will have to be established for handling. Yields of 1300-1400 pounds to the acre are not uncommon and payment of four and a half cents a pound for top grade seed has been maintained.

According to George Cruickshank, district agriculturist, the return received from the crop would not demonstrate the feasibility of local farmers entering into this field. It is true the Manitoba farmer has the sunflower for silage purposes nevertheless corn in the long run will be more profitable to farmers in the valley, Mr. Cruikshank stated. One essential for successful sunflower crops is a maintained heat and from reports this particular district of Manitoba has a climatic condition adaptable for such purposes. Vegetable oil from sunflowers is not used in the manufacture of margarine but goes to use in basic oil for specific types of lubrication.
