C6 The Bellingham Herald Wednesday December 30 1998 TECHNOLOGY Ghost of Internet Explorer can haunt your system Netscape browser Were most people to compare the browsers side by side come to the same conclusion All of which may be the best argument for keeping the browser apart from the operating system Why get stuck with an inferior integrated browser when someone else can make a better one as a stand-alone application? browser And this aggressive approach to putting Internet Explorer on every Windows-based computer is certainly paying dividends for Microsoft Its browser now holds more than half of the market share according to a recent study Even so Internet Explorer shows nothing that would prompt me to consider trading in my deadbolt on the front door and the slipcovers on the furniture Because no sooner was Internet Explorer on board than it started rearranging my PC to suit itself After all decided to install Internet Explorer so that must mean 1) Want it as my default browser? (Noooo!) 2) Want it to switch my Web page icons to the Microsoft version? (Noooo!) 3) Want it to become the default viewer for various graphic images? (Noooo!) Changing these things back to the way I wanted them was a mjor pain Heck you even dispose of the Internet Explorer icon by simply dragging it to the the way you can with virtually every other desktop icon No mere trash can is appropriate for the sacred Internet Explorer icon apparently To be fair Microsoft does seem to be working on the speed issue The beta version of Internet Explorer 50 appears noticeably faster than earlier editions of the crosoft products successfully avoided most of these pleas But then the new version of Quicken came out Several features of Quicken in particular the scenarios that let you plan for future expenses work without Internet Explorer The Quicken guy I complained to about this seemed almost apologetic He as sorry as I was though Bad enough that I had to succumb to Internet Explorer but the software absolutely insisted that it had to sit on my drive where of course I had no room for it Never mind that Netscape happily sits on the spacious drive Internet Explorer must have space on (or wherever the Windows operating system happens to be situated) Grumbling I managed to kill and relocate enough software so Internet Explorer could be at home Right about then was when realized I should have left the fwiEflimniTHi COMPUTERS: If you uninstall Microsoft browser it will try to reinstall itself BY JOHN MORAN THE HARTFORD COURANT Pointed questions are flying around the Washington DC courthouse where Microsoft is defending itself against antitrust charges But yet to hear this one asked and answered: Why does Internet Explorer browser have such a large market share when it is so bad? I have tried and tried to like Internet Explorer I have tried to merely tolerate it I have even tried to ignore it No dice And not just because Internet Explorer is big and slow although it is used to big and slow when it comes to Microsoft applications If good enough as with say Excel or FrontPage overlook big and slow So it took me a while to decide why I find Internet Explorer so an noying After all a browser is ordinarily a rather inoffensive piece of software You click it displays Web pages And if Internet Explorer would leave it at that everything would be fine But Internet Explorer satisfied with being just a browser It wants to take over the operating system Indeed it wants to be the operating system Internet Explorer is like the boorish neighbor who invites himself over to your house rearranges the furniture grabs the remote control and starts helping himself to in the fridge Take the uninvited part If your PC runs Windows 95 or Windows 98 it comes complete with Internet Explorer You say you never asked for it never invited it in? Tough If you do eventually manage to uninstall it inherit the task of defending your PC against the repeated efforts to reintroduce itself Internet Explorer piggybacks on what must be dozens of other software programs including virtually all Mi 1 4 ft Jt? leveny Monday fy Every Monday during the school year jj? jilook for our school page that focuses on local education events and issues THE BELLINGRftl HERALD Xv BREAKFAST Extra Value Meal WIN UK 715-2225 buy of classified adJ valid4or htisiiolLtttlp wanted real rental ads Board and announcements expires Dec 31 1998 Classified $6 $11 a i Items Under 500 Items under 500 items under Items over 1200 Afl KaiPQ 3 lines 3 days: 6 3 lines 7 days: 11 4 lines 10 days: 4 lines 10 days: jiu nuiiiOe Additional lines: Additional lines: Additional lines: Additional lines per line per line per line per day per line per day Bargain Board only must be paid in advance Rates for private party advertisers selling merchandise Garage $12 $14 $16 Photo $31 Sales: 2dayMlines 3daMlines iStSlS Ads: $135 per day Ads must be paid in advance Place your ad in person to receive your FREE Garage Sale signs!
