Before a crowd of close to 1,000 Friday night 17-year-old Janet Caroline Urquhart was crowned Miss Chilliwack. The pageant and official opening ceremonies of Country Living Days drew one of the largest crowds in the history of the festival. Highlight of the evening was Miss Chilliwack pageant, with 18 young Chilliwack girls competing for the 1976 title and the right to represent the community in the Miss PNE pageant later this year. The decision was a difficult one for the judges who have watched the girls perform in public and private events during the past eight weeks. On Friday the girls were first presented before the audience as they cast their ballots for Miss Congeniality, a title eventually won by Miss Mill Street Merchants, Nancy Margaret MacMillan.

Following their short prepared speeches the five finalists were chosen by the judges. Janet said she was "really shocked" when master of ceremonies John Tutte announced her name for Miss Chilliwack 1976.

"I just never dreamed I would get it." Janet is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Urquhart of Sardis. The final minutes of the pageant were equally hard on the new queen's family. Mrs.

Urquhart noted "we were all holding our breath but I think it was harder on the men of the family than anyone else."
