18 THE CHILUWACK PROGRESS, Dec. 17. 1969 At Three Princess Avenue Crossings New Signal Lights Now In Operation they will face away from from Yale Road West, and will make use ef off street parking. Plans for the redevelopment were made last spring. At the same time, plans were released for changing the signal lights to allow direct access to Yale Road West from both Southgate Shopping Centre and the redeveloped stores across the street.

Alderman Smith said the light changes will be effected as soon as the stores are Chilliwack's three new traffic lights appear to be oper-aing with few bugs, after going into action last week, according to city traffic committee chairman Alderman Richard Smith. Lights, which are located at three Princess Avenue intersections, are designed to TV Dinners Stolen Several TV dinners were stolen overnight Sunday in a break-in at East End Food Market near the corner of Yale Road East and Nowell Street Police said access was gain travelling on Yale Road and Young Street may sometimes encounter long red lights at the Princess intersections. Reason for the delay, he explained is that Five Corners operates on a 70-second cycle, in order to properly clear Wellington Avenue traffic. The new signals must tie in with the full length of the Five Corner cycle. Design of the new traffic controls was governed by advice given by a provincial government traffic engineer, said Alderman Smith.

He also noted that changes are slated for the intersection of Yale Road West and Hod-gins Avenue as soon as developers finalize rebuilding at the comer. First change was recently completed, with the construction of a new service station on the southeast corner, to replace an aging structure. Second change will com with rebuilding of stores next to the service station, so that create smoother traffic flow through downtown Chilliwack. They were ordered last year, after city council turn? ed down Alderman Smith's, recommendation for a downtown one-way street system. Alderman Smith said a few people missed the lights, and suggested these could be motorists who have been used to driving through the intersections without signals for many years.

He noted the signals at Yale Road West and Young Street are both designed to tie in with Five Corners, and that the Main Street light is synchronized with the Wellington Avenue and Main Street signal. "There was Just na way we could tie in Princess Avenue, se motorists will probably notice they may have to step at each light when travelling east or west," said the alderman. He added that motorists Early Lights Barrel-shaped glass lights were among Christmas tree ornaments used before the turn of the century. SAVE 10, 20 AND 30 OFF AT SHAW'S iMMMMNWMMMMMMMWMMMWMMMMW 5 -Piece Set $99.50 After months of preparation a proposed air pollution control bylaw was presented to township council and immediately found some opposition. Council members were in general agreement with most of the bylaw, but some took exception to wording pertaining to odor control. Opposition to the immediate passing of the bylaw was led by Alderman A. S. Barker.

He said a section of the proposed bylaw concerning odor control would be difficult to enforce and could cause "unnecessary hardships to farmers." By the zoning of farms in agricultural areas and away from residential areas, the problems of odors are minimized, he said. Alderman Gordon Mitchell said the bylaw might cause some hardships but noted "it is 200 per cent better than anything we have now." Alderman L. E. Russell said that an inspector would be placed in a "very difficult position" if he was forced to judge if an odor caused discomfort to another individual. People in agricultural areas should not be given unlimited freedom with regard to failing to control odors, however, he suggested "we certainly do not want to cause a hardship as far as normal farming operations are concerned." "I think it is going to be difficult to enforce, but I still think it should stay in," Alderman Mitchell said.
