Sunday September? 1997 Belleville News-Democrat Page 2 Section Missouri 5A champ smothers Mandela Nebiolo helped Rome lose Olympic bid Belleville East 21-7 at dome By Dean Criddle The sentiment of returning the games to Greece alter snubbing Athens in favor of Atlanta for the Centennial Olympics was the overriding issue in the vote But Mandela and Nebiolo also played significant roles in dimming Rome's bid Italian officials said and the Greeks confirmed that a deal was struck the night before the vote in Mandela's hotel suite in Lausanne The South African president promised that if Cape Town was eliminated from the voting Africa would throw its support to Athens In return Athens would back a South African bid for the 2008 games "He just offered his support to us if Cape Town didn't go to the end" Athens bid chief Gianna Angelopolous-Daskalaki said Saturday "That was very fair and it was an honor for us as well" The strategy worked Once Cape Town went out in the third round 14 votes shifted to Athens in the final round giving the Greeks a resounding victory "Everything happened before the vote" Italian Olympic committee president Mario Pescante said "The electoral strategy was worked out the night before Mandela received verious delegations in his hotel Now Cape Town will have received excellent guarantees on the vote for 2008" IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch who does not vote but was widely believed to favor Athens said he was unaware of any backroom around these kids should be proud of them" The Lancers' defensive effort was more impressive because it came without senior standout Jeremy Halbert who injured his knee The Hawks took advantage of Halbert 's departure and moved the ball near midfield before fumbling it The Lancers failed to get a first down on the possession and were forced to punt Burklow dropped the snap from center and was tackled on East's 25-yard line Four plays later Jerome Kirksey scored on a 1 2-yard run to give Central the lead The Hawks also blocked a punt in the second quarter but were halted once again by the Lancers' defense On the Lancers' next punt Green returned the ball 40 yards to the East 13-yard line Junior fullback Carey Davis did the rest scoring on a 13-yard run "The mistakes we made on special teams were my fault" McGinnis said The Lancers offense awoke in the later stages of the first half EJ Nold run for a 15-yard gain and Scruggs made a 29-yard run which took the ball to the Hawks' 20-yard line The Lancers tried a field goal as time ran out but came up short The Lancers' defense kept its team in the game in the third quarter Six times drives by the potent Hawks offense were halted in Lancers territory After falling behind 21-0 the Lancers marched downfield for their only score Quarterback Tony Patterson completed passes to Dante Brinkley Joe Ireland and Wes Kennedy to take the ball deep into Hawks territory Scruggs then scored on his 5-yard run Associated Press LAUSANNE Switzerland A Greek pact with Nelson Mandela and a backlash against Italy's Primo Nebiolo were key factors that helped Athens beat Rome in the race for the 2004 Olympics While Greece celebrated the return of the games to their birthplace Italian officials Saturday were still trying to come to terms with the humiliating defeat they sustained at the hands of their ancient rivals What most expected would be a close fight turned into a rout for Athens which beat Rome by 25 votes 66-4 1 in the final round of secret ballot by the International Olympic Committee on Friday Cape Town South Africa Stockholm Sweden and Buenos Aires Argentina were eliminated in earlier rounds "The bid was Rome's to lose and they lost it" John Krimsky deputy secretary general of the US Olympic Committee said "The expectations can kill you They were so confident" Anita DeFrantz the IOC vice president from the United States said the Rome delegation might have hurt itself in the final presentation by having all four Italian IOC members speak and by boasting how many Italians are presidents of international federations "It's like the US saying they have a nuclear arsenal" she said Belleville News Democrat ST LOUIS Finding different ways to win helped the llaelwood entral Hawks capture the Missouri Class 5A state title a year ago On Saturday at the Trans World Dome the Hawks
