The CMHC says that nine houses were started during the period January to May, 1961, and 18 houses completed. Chilliwack's record is well' down on the list among nonmetropolitan centers in Vancouver. From time to time, the school board has granted what is in effect a waiver of fees for students showing considerable merit, if there are severe financial difficulties. But even when a student goes to university, Mr. Halcrow pointed out, there are many ways in which he can reduce his costs such as scholar ships and bursaries if he has the scholastic ability.

How does Chilliwack senior high fare academically in com parison with first year univer- sity? LOW FAILURE RATE Mr. Halcrow commented that many of the school's senior matric teachers have, in fact, previously taught at university. The students' failure rate at Chilliwack is less than 10 per cent. The average in the province is approximately 20 per cent He also pointed out that Chilliwack has one of the finest school libraries in the Fraser Valley. If things are so good in Grade 13, why go to first year university at all? Mr.

Halcrow replied that there are one or two courses available at university which a senior high school cannot supply. Apart from that, it is largely a matter of A young adult might feel happier at the thought of attending "varsity" than staying on at school. On the other hand, Mr. Halcrow indicated, university life might not quite live up to a student's expectations. With such a large number of freshmen now entering university, a student is a pretty small tree in a mighty large forest.

In grade 13, he will probably get more individual attention. And since a student is encouraged to be more self-reliant, the atmosphere is different from a regular classroom. Mr. Halcrow said that, eventually, he would like to see Grade 14 classes established here. That would bring the school up to junior college status.

To carry out this plan would, of course, mean a larger school there just isn't the room right now..
